It seems to me that if we could actually get a decent fight, what ever corps were wanting to fight, what ever alliance it may be. If we could get a fleet battle where you could actually seriously play the game rather then having to work the lag into the mix. Most of the forum smack would vanish. To me it seems the frustration with the way these fleet battles works, neither side wanting to jump in on the other due to lag " why else would a larger fleet not jump in on a smaller one other then lag. This forum smack would go way down. just a thought back to my icecream

Lag seems to have gotten worse imho. Seems especially bad in belts out in 0.0, even when there's only 2 of you hunting and a few NPC's. Obviously the lag is at its worse during peak times.
As for large fleet battles - lol - going to need some radical game code improvements for that to become a reality. What happened to the dedicated programming squad that was put on this and what did they find?
Are fixes for this coming in Shiva?

ccp is like coming with lag fixes and stuff, but i havent seen any improvements. fleet battles were a lot better before they tried to fix lag!

Apparently Shiva is going to bring some major improvements in performance, whether that helps super laggy fleet battles remains to be seen

Maybe im being a bit pessimistic but I dont think things will get better with Shiva. Remember that although they are bringing in lag fixes they are also bringing in a lot more enviromental scenary and player structures, all of which will need to be rendered

I really don't need to render a model with 40 polys and 32-bit textures when it's 125km away, do I?

Yeap .... i dont understand how my comp lame though it is can get graphics lag from drawing a bunch of different coloured boxes its just wrong..... hardly like you've got anytime to look at stuff in a big fleet battle anyway.
I think one of the bhs did a test on the old chaos server using ships with no models (just the brackets) ppl instaloaded fleets of 100's of em with 0 lag when they got in. I'd love an option to turnoff ship models somewhere, cant be too hard to program but then again that would be too easy Mostly harmless |

Aggreed, especially for fleet battles, this would make a huge huge differance. Personally I would keep the options on for render ships and what not for normal play, but would never ever turn that option on for anything bigger then 10+ ships.
I don't program, and franky have no idea at all what this would be like to actually program into the options menu but if it is at least remotly possible I think it should be done.
If it has indeed been done before, and with the results you've stated then someone from CCP should certainly get on this ASAP.
Imagine if this could actually happen, and people could start having super fleet battles With out lag being the number one factor in battle.

Most other games have an option to set how close something has to be before it will render it, normally called 'max clipping range' or something. Why can't we just have an option like this?
Eg: We can set it so say, ships have to be within say 10km before it will render them? That way people with better systems can set it to render further out, if they so wish, but those with poorer systems can set it so they will just see the bracket icons. Ships should always be rendered when you click 'look at' no matter what, but doing it this way, if they were outside your 'clip plane' then you'd only experience lag from rendering, when you did a 'look at'.

We just had 120 ppl battle in Venal, and the lag was... well at times my whole PC would lock up for a minute or two. When not locked up it was like 0.5 fps. --

Just a quick question, and I think this could use a bump as CCP should look into this.
Is fleet lag caused by your own computer having to render all those ships?
Or is it caused by all the inforamation having to be sent through the 'pipes' as it were.
If the majority of the lag is caused by our own computers having to render all the ships and drones and other such objects then it should be stupidly easy to fix that by giving us the option to turn off ship rendering.
If indeed, the lag is caused by CCP's own servers and the routers on the way having to send all the info to us then wouldn't it be next to impossible to fix that? I mean that option would have to be toggled on and off server side. Meaning that no one in the game would get to see actual ships. Just boxes of various colors.
