How to cool my GPU?

Chinny Rekkon	Posted - 2009.07.17 17:19:00 - [1] my machine seems to be dog slow when playing EVE and so i just ran SpeedFan and it says my GPU is running at 72 celcius - I'm running a GeForce 8800 GTS (640MB) and have NO idea what i need to do to cool this thing off. Does anyone have any suggestions?

Lork Niffle Gallente The Scope	Posted - 2009.07.17 18:02:00 - [3] I have a XFX 4890 with the basic level GPU fan and it idles at 60C, full load it heads to 65C with the fan at 30%. Ensure that you fan is running high enough, put automatic fan control on and the software will keep the GPU at a safe temperature as much as it can. For nVidia cards anything above 90C i would worry about. 70C is about right for a 88xxGTS card. If you really want to the first thing you do is clear the fan of any obstruction, other PCI cards near it try moving further away. Clear it of any dust. Ensure that you have no unneccesary items in your case and ensure the airflow in your case is one direction. If so, try changing the EVE settings so your FPS caps at the frame rate of your monitor, probably 60fps. Not only will your GPU cool down significantly, but you will not notice any difference in gameplay.

Set it to Interval One. this will mean your card will do no more work than it has to. This option is mainly called Vertical Sync in other games. Marcus Septer	Posted - 2009.07.18 03:02:00 - [7] iv water cooled my system got 2x 8800 GTS and 2 AMD 3.0 cpu's. i got them running at 52 degrees on both cards. but... but each one has its own radiator feeding it so yeah a little extreme. NOTE: water cooling pain can be a in the @$$

I just finished yanking most of my liquid cooling stuff -only three radiators remain. You could use the RivaTuner tool to UNDERCLOCK your GPU. You can find it in the downloads section at guru3d.com. Adding another card for SLI might help by reducing the workload of the single card. You could try liquid cooling. It's not just for over-clockers.

Shereza	Posted - 2009.07.28 06:55:00 - [15] I used to use an Athlon XP system with a Diamond Radeon x1650 video card in it for playing EVE and I routinely hit 85c. The only serious problems I had with the card were inherent to the card itself. IOW, it was either design issues or hardware damage not related to heat that made the card unstable. Last summer, however, when I didn't have an AC in the window my card would often get up to around 95c while playing EVE and as a result lockups and similar issues were much more common. Since then I've built a new PC, a Phenom II x3 based system, which is running a Sapphire Radeon HD4830 video card with one of those over-sized (read that as the card takes two slots) heat sink and fan setups. Up until a couple weeks ago my system would idle at around 35-36c and EVE would bump it up to 45c. Since then I put in an 80mm fan and a 120mm fan. My GPU now idles at 30-31c and EVE, at this moment while docked, is taking awhile to heat my GPU up past 36c and even with multiple clients on multiple monitors always stays under 45c. At that temperature the fan on my GPU is only running at about 40% of its maximum speed, 1200-1300 rpm, as well. Long story short, examine your case. Clean out the dust on your GPU, CPU's heat sink and fan, clean out your power supply if you feel lucky, clean out any fans, and if you have areas where you can mount more fans do so. You can get decent quality fans for fairly low prices and if you have a window-mounted AC like me making enough noise to drown out louder case fans you can go a bit lower in (audio) quality and save a bit of money with no noticeable difference, until the AC gets turned off. ____________________ Minmatar in Fantasy or Duct Tape Goes Medieval.

If I leave my fan speed on auto on my Radeon HD4870 it seems to like keeping it at 77 degrees! If I manually whack the fan up it will keep the temperature down at around 40-50 quite easily which stops the rest of my case heating up too... But yea, a GPU that's at 72 degrees while under load is nothing to worry about. ---------------------------------------------- The funny thing about this sentence is that by the time you've finished reading it, it's too late for you to realise it doesn't say anything.

All Nvidia 7 and 8 series GPU's have a manufacturing defect which will lead to higher temperatures then designed for. Their insurance agency recently sued them for not forthcoming with the details of the screwup recently. If your GPU is in a desktop the chance of overheating is relatively low, but it will be more prone to hickups. If it's in a laptop, then prepare for failure.
