You must know at least 3 people in the company that can (and want to) recommend you, and you won't ever find out "that there are 200 other applicants vying for the same two open spots" because CCP doesn't respond to every application sent in, only to those they think are viable for a position at CCP. Hell, I know for a fact they don't even look at all the applications sent in. There are no requirements to "know people in the company". If a person has a skillset we can use, he/she gets hired regardless if he/she knows ten people or none at all.
