Destroyers are excellent for lvl 1 and lvl 2 missions, then you can convert it to a salvage ship later. or use it for a throw away ganker

Originally by: Snow Banshee I really dont understand why people suggest destroyers for l1 missions. Any tier 2/3 frigate just eat them so easily that there is no point to use something else.
It's very simple. Even the highest tier T1 frigate doesn't put out the DPS - and more important - volley damage of a destroyer. The range and tracking bonuses are also awesome.
Some missions, such as The Blockade, are stupidly easy and much faster in a destroyer since you can one-shot all of the frigates as soon as they get into your (very long) range.
Additionally, getting into a destroyer is very easy. A few hours of training one ship skill and you have a step up in fighting capability.
To train correctly for a cruiser, you not only need the cruiser skill, you also need the appropriate gunnery skills. Also, the cost of buying and fitting a cruiser is much more than buying and fitting a destroyer.
For someone that has been in the game for a while, destroyers aren't all that great a choice in most situations. However, for a new player, they are easily attainable, immediately effective, and most importantly, fun. Do you remember the first time you had a ship with EIGHT GUNS? It's a great feeling.

There was one day when I was bored from missions and decided to do something else. And I started exploration. To make it simple, I began in high-sec. I tried to do this in my probe ship. I could find anomalies with ease, but could not defeat any combat site. So I had to find anomaly with probe, return to base station and switch to combat ship, clean it, then return and switch to salvage boat to clean the mess after, then return for probe again... not worth the time. And here comes an idea... destroyer. The old forgotten salvage boat. And I did this:
[Thrasher, Explorer] Damage Control II Gyrostabilizer II
Cold-Gas I Arcjet Thrusters Medium F-S9 Regolith Shield Induction Small C5-L Emergency Shield Overload I
200mm Light 'Scout' Autocannon I, Fusion S 200mm Light 'Scout' Autocannon I, Fusion S 200mm Light 'Scout' Autocannon I, Fusion S 200mm Light 'Scout' Autocannon I, Fusion S 200mm Light 'Scout' Autocannon I, Fusion S Salvager I Salvager I Core Probe Launcher I, Core Scanner Probe I
This ship is good for high-sec combat sites and radar-salvaging sites. If (rarely) I find the zone difficult to conquer - I come back for cruiser or BC, depending on gate limitations. (yes, most highsec deadspace sites have ship size limitations ) However, the income from explorations is unpredictable. You probably make more in missionsing.

Thanks for all the positive replies guys. I wasn't sure how worthwhile it is but I think I will train it and give it a try just to make sure I can get the hang of things before I upgrade to a cruiser. I have all the skills trained for the Vexor minus Scout Drones V - so Im close to using that but I don't think I can afford to lose one if I did have it :p
That said - Im thinking about sticking t2 rail guns on a catalyst and finishing my epic arc mission. Then I can start off with more lvl 1's and lvl 2's to gather up some cash - by that time Ill have the Vexor nicely equipped :)
Im curious on a good fitting. How does this look
High: 8x 150mm Railguns II
Med: Cold-Gas I Arcjet Thrusters Cap Recharger II
Low: Small Armor Repairer II Adaptive Nano Membrane II (Im training Haul upgrades V now but it'll be a few days) :) Damage Control II

I had the most fun flying a destroyer in the beginning. Now my favorite ships in pvp groups out in 0.0 are my interceptors and interdictors with rockets. I have both the caldari and amarr dictor fitted with rockets. The sound of them rockets going off just sounds destructive, and pretty loud. I typically fit them with em tech two high damage and consistently score pretty close to the top in damage dealt on kill mails. plus, everyone always likes dictors on gate camps =-)

The setup above looks nice. But you can't squeeze 8X150 T2's in the destroyer, even if you stip everything else. The best you can aim for is 8xbest named 125's, and even then you will need advanced weapon upgrades for some level and/or +3% PG implant. And if by any miracle you have extra powergrid, you can replace cap recharger with cap booster. Hell, you can even make this cap stable with micro booster II.

Junkosani Kauniki Level 1 qual 14 Security Caldari Navy.
She was immediately available to my alt who already had Negotiation 4, Social 4, and Connections 1 when I started running for her, by the time I finished up Connections 3, I had access to Harenen Oksuken level 2 qual -18 Command.
I've since done 4 more missions for Junko and I now have access to some 2 qual -9 agents. That's always been my problem, agents open up faster than my fighting skills. Still need 4 days for gunnery 5 and 4 days for drones 5. --

Destroyers are great fun for PvP Train "Warp Out Fast V" i.e. bug off if you are taking heavy fire :-) Thrasher is most useful and versatile.
Frig Insta-pop 280mmIIs for alpha = RFEMP MWD, sebo, point/TC/TP/whatever MAPC, Gyro
You can swap to autocannons, fit a MSE and fight up close... but why bother?
