I just got kicked from a BF2 server for beeing afk too long. I know most of all other MMOs have an autokick function. I find it very irritating why EVE doesn't. I know a lot of guys who just keep permanently running their eve client while sitting on station or cloaked, macro mine or whatever. So, my question is:
Why is there no auto-disconnect feature in EVE which disconnects users after a certain amount of idle time?

Being afk kicked could get you killed in Eve.

There is, it's called "Socket Closed" It only works for a lucky few and it really makes the game more exciting because it can strike at any moment!

I could be talking out of my arse, but I think a LOOOONG time ago (2005) there was some official talk of implementing this, a 1.5hr timer.

I take it you are seriously worried about our climate changes and therefore supporting hundreds of US players, their alts and their dogs beeing logged in sitting in a station and wasting energy and resources BIG time?
@ SPin when u know you get autokicked after 30 mins inactivity, you get safe before that. people tend to manage that every day, it's called downtime

If they implemented one there would be about 12 people in Eve at any given time.

I need to see the linkage and details showing the change in energy consumption when I'm logged in and when I'm logged out, please.
To that end, perhaps YOU should set the features in your computer to shutdown completely when inactivity hits 30 min.

You need to switch your ISP to Tiscali to access the auto-disconnect function.

My idle desktop is 153 watts, running eve client while idleing in station is 383 watts. If you don't believe me ...
... all you need is a device that looks like this
http://www.e-werk-mittelbaden.de/mm/strommessgeraet_1.jpg
It costs less than 20 bucks, and you just plug it in between your PC and your power socket. see 4 yourself ...

If they implemented that then everyone would just run a macro to move the mouse around while they were afk to get around the afk disconnect.

Edited by: Dirk Magnum on 21/07/2009 15:20:43 Auto-disconnect is a seriously bad idea for a feature. I remember back in RMR when it seemed like I'd always be disconnected after a certain amount of time AFK. Very, very lame.
edit: also MMOs are not in any way comparable to BF2 where OP got kicked from for being AFK. BF2 matches pit at most 32 players against another 32. Even having one guy AFK hurts the team. In Eve you have up to 50,000+ people on at a time, all doing their own thing.

Nah I wouldn't, I'd get one of those balancing bird toys like Homer Simpson had to press a button on the keyboard every 5 seconds or so.

Why would you leave your computer on burning 153watts if you're not using it?? Why do you hate nature so much??
When I'm not using my computer I turn it off and unplug it from the wall. Because I care about the Nature!
You sir, are an enemy of nature and destroyer of worlds. I pity the birds and trees you have caused the deaths of.

Because EVE is not WOW or BF2.

I was under the impression we had an auto-kick system.
It activates when you jump with your fleet into an engagement, or when in the oposing factions territory so that the NPC Navy come to the log-off point and destroy you before you can log back in.
..... oh that's not what you meant.

all these answers, and not a single one that actually explains why "we" don't need it. Impressive
autokick afk'ers! There is no need to be cloaked 23/7 somehwere and no need to sit at any station longer forever. Not even Jita

YOU are the one requesting a change. I checked...there is no explanation in the thread for why we DO need it.

I'm confused, ever since I've resubbed I get hit with the auto disconnect "feature" all the time in heavily populated mission hubs, and then I also get to experience the "you are number 50 in the queue" upon trying to log back in to finish a mission.

because sitting afk or cloaked makes people like you insane, some good way to terrorize bears who cant move anymore in insecure space :-DDD
Seriously, why do you care about afk people???

You third worlders just love to poke fun at us Yanks. That's okay we can take it. BTW not only does my dog have his own account. He likes to play from inside of my SUV. I keep it running so he can enjoy the AC.

Originally by: Robert Caldera Seriously, why do you care about afk people???
Simply because they anoy :)
the afk cloaker who might be in a pilgrim and prevents me from rattin the afk station sitter who keeps me camping the station forever the afk ratter who gets me traveling to his system for gankage the afk ally mates which indicate a crowded system with to few belts for you all ;) the afk perma login alts indicating a HUGE corp with lots of active members all the time
The bottom line is simple: They have no pain, just gain. Seriously, there is no need they can do this all day long. 30 - 60 mins is still anoying for all of the above, right?
And on top, i really think it's a uneccessary waste of resources.
