Newb question. I have just started salvaging and I am getting over run with salvage. I have been just selling it but was wondering which is the best way to go. Which will make me more ISK? Reprocessing will give me diferent mineral compounds but then I have to sell them as well. How do I read the market to find the best places to sell? I have seen sites that give market pricing but dont really understand. Do I need to lug this stuff to the best market to make anything?
Long winded sorry..

Salvaging and Reprocessing are two different things. No reason not to do both if you can.
Salvaging is the extraction of items such as Armor Plates, Tripped Power Circuits etc (items used in rig manufacture), using the Salvaging skill, and a Salvager module.
Reprocessing is the conversion of items back into their components.
It sounds like you are using the word salvaging, when you mean looting.
I salvage all ships, and then sell the resulting salvage items.
I loot all ships, and reprocess everything that isnt a meta3/4 item, and sell the minerals.
I make a trip once a week to Jita where I dump all the meta3/4 items on buy orders.
I have no doubt I could make more by selling all these things myself, but frankly I dont have the time or patience to manage all the sell orders. If I make 100m from someone by selling stuff, I dont begrudge them the 10m they can make by reselling at a higher price!

Salvaging versus reprocessing is not an either-or thing, you can do both ... Just be careful not to reprocess modules that sell well on their own. Reading the market is as easy as right-clicking something and checking its market details, at least fundamentally. See what the respective item's lowest sell order is, and what the highest buy order is; then it's up to you to decide what to do with the item. In general, you will find the best buy orders, whether it's modules, minerals or salvage loot, at the different market hubs throughout the universe. To that end, training a couple of levels in an industrial ship of your choice makes it easier to move all the junk one collects from looting rats and salvaging their wrecks. It's all about maximising profit! -- Hold Infinity in the palm of your hand And Eternity in an hour. |

OK I understand that but how do you make the decision whether to sell or reprocess. I know it's all based on price so if the item isn't really gonna make much profit you just reprocess cause it's just not worth the time and effort to squeeze a few isk out of it? That makes sense I guess. An aside question? How do I get me charector picture to show on the postings instead of the !

When you get a "named" item, that is, an item with a different name than the factory standard item (e.g. Cold-gas Arcjet I instead of 1MN Afterburner I) do a "show info" on it and see the "meta level". If it is meta level 3 or 4, it's quite good and might be worth money.
Meta 1 or 2 is probably worth very little, and normal T1 items (meta zero) are the same. Reprocess these and use or sell the minerals.

to find out whether you make more isk selling or recycling, work out the mineral content of the item, then adjust by your recycle rate (85% - 100%) from the station and your skills.
some item like rocket launchers sell so cheap that you get more from recycling them and selling the minerals.
i'll leave you to figure out the market research and do your homework :)

Here's what I do:
Meta 0 - Reprocess. Meta 1 - Reprocess. Meta 2 - Reprocess all except sell turrets, launchers, and shield hardeners. Meta 3 - Sell. Meta 4 - Sell.

I have found that it's almost always better to reprocess Tech I items yourself and sell named items. There are exceptions and it depends on your standing with the corp who owns the station and your skills.

It takes on average 1-2 months following the creation of a new character for the server to export it's portrait. The only thing to do is wait, it'll start loading eventually. |

Probably, but it comes down to having a simple and fast system for making the decision. It is impractical to lookup all the prices at all the hubs for every single item.
If you have a better suggestion, do share.

Just adding my 0.02 ISK to the discussion.
1) Use the price history function of the market. It shows the volumes sold in green bars as well as the average prices on ask and bid orders. A yellow dot marks the price (at which the items sold on average that day; at least I think it does). Sometimes a low bid price is due to people wanting to sell "now" ... once they have sold off their stocks, buyers will still be ready to pay the "old" average price.
2) Don't start the "0.01 isk less" price race. Train trading skills to increase the number of orders you can set up and be patient. If a price is fair, the item will be sold. I had sell orders go after 80+ days of waiting. Comparing your order's price to the market every now and then is useful though. The only exceptions are fundemantal changes over longer periods. Newly introduced items to the game (medium and small rigs with the next patch) start at high prices which continually drop until they reach an acceptable level for your average customer. Salvage materials and minerals are often subject to cycles.
3) Get standings toward the station owner of your favourite market hub and reprocessing facility. Better standings mean lower taxes and better reprocessing yield. There are also skills that help with: gaining standings, lowering broker fees, making trading more comfortable, reprocessing yield ... To get better standings you may have to run missions in a different place, depending where you can find a suitable agent.
4) Sub-contract if you want to do stuff "now". While selling items is more or less anonymous, offering services is not. You don't necessarily have to "shoot rat - loot & salvage - reprocess - haul to market hub - sell" all by yourself (and train all the skills making every step easier). Do what you like and pay others to do stuff they like.

The simplest method I've found is to use one of the out of game asset managers.
I use EveHQ, as it lists the current sell price and the current reprocess value for each of your assets. Simply sort by the various columns and work you way down the list. I move all the good stuff from "Loot" to "Sales" and the crap to "Refine" (you can use corp hangers, or station containers to sort it all). Then I refine all the stuff in the "refine" hanger and move the minerals to "Materials".
After a little while you get to recognise some items that always refine (defender missiles for example) and some that always sell, the rest gets sorted once a week using EveHQ.
My system isn't perfect and EveHQ relies on having an up to date download from Eve-central (which isn't perfect either), but it's quick and that's more important.

Kudos for sharing this gem. Is there a specific way to finding the closest value for your stuff?

I'm at work right now and don't have the application in front of me, but there are a number of columns in the assets view.
From memory there's a sales value, a reprocess value and a reprocess benefit. Those names are probably not right, but you get the idea - if the reprocess benefit is negative, then you're better off selling it. Eve-central values are not perfect, but it's a good enough guide for me. Time itself is valuable after all - why waste time sorting to the last ISK, when I could be doing something either more fun or more productive (sometimes both).
I generally melt anything with a low negative reprocess benefit as well as all the ones with a positive reprocess benefit. I use the minerals anyway and the cost on my time isn't worth the effort to sell them (besides broker fees and taxes eat into any small sales benefit). I can then focus my sell orders on the items with the highest sell benefit.
