After reading through the article, it appears to affect iPhones and Android based phones and nothing else. Some other attacks using a similar vector affect Winmobile phones and Symbian phones.
Nothing about the Palm Pre.
Glad I have a Pre.

Im going to laugh so hard when some hacker creates the first super virus exclusively for Mac's. Mac needs some humbling. On an unrelated note, Kneel before Zod! |

I am not trendy enough to own any "i" brand marketing. Besides, it's a phone not a lifestyle. I got my razr for free with my plan, so why would I shell out more cash for a phone, when I already get gouged through my contract?

Because if your a hip, 16-27 year old with minimal experience with computer you'll gladly shell out money for a piece of crap that has an apple with a bite in it.
I have always found the apple logo rather funny, its like Steve Jobs is handing people his left overs. On an unrelated note, Kneel before Zod! |

I'm a 16-27 with plenty of experience with computers, plus I work in the IT industry.
I have a Macbook and and iPhone because for my purposes and my experience, they are simply better than the competition.
Some people might be happy with a cheap laptop or a Nokia handset and that's fine, but I'm happy paying the price premium for Apple products.

I think people are freaking out a little much about that issue. It's been a known issue for months before it was finally talked about openly at the Black Hat conference.
Do any of you actually know someone who's been taken out by that vulnerability? I certainly don't, nor have I even heard of a single person who's been affected by it...
Careful, it's about as dangerous as the swine flu!!

It has happened. A friend of mine got a seemingly blank message on his Iphone, and then when he tried to send a message later he found his phone drained of credit to a premium line. This was about 2 months ago I think?
Apple put it down to user error and his provider actually wanted to overcharge him. |

Yeah, it works fine. Really easy to set up too.
Quote: While a agree apple products can have some very good quality, but it really depends on your purpose. For most people something with a simple interface like a mac works great. For more technically inclined users though PC is the way to go. Personal preference though.
Uuuummmmm, unless you're going to follow that up with "technically inclined users though PC WITH LINUX is the way to go..." you're dead wrong. Windows is for my gramma that doesn't want to learn anything new. Linux is for those of us that want to do it ourselves and don't mind the rough edges. Mac is for those of us who simply want it to work.
Me? I'm a Linux nut - but I'd consider a Mac a ****ing huge step above any Windows "PC"... and the iphone is simply the best (personal) smartphone on the market as things stand. The Pre made some good strides in usability, but it still isn't quite there.

Woah, chill out a bit.
Windows, as a whole, is a much better platform for writing, testing and using applications as a whole due to its unparalleled driver and architecture support. Criticizing it as an OS because it has a tried and tested interface isn't a valid reason. Just because the base interface has been used for x amount of years doesn't make it bad in any way. It's efficient with the right learning, and it's simple without, two traits which make it very user-friendly, based on how much experience you have.
I'm not a PC Fanboy, or an Apple hater. I use an iTouch purely because it is the most versatile MP3 player out there. My mobile phone works fine as a telephone, and I don't need anything more, so why bother paying an extra ú10 a month for an iPhone contract, and the additional markup for the phone too?
Macs are different to PCs. Neither is 'better' in the UI department, same goes for Linux. They are each unique in function and design, and fulfill their niches nicely. It doesn't change the fact that Apple still believe they can charge a stupid markup for brushed aluminium casings, though. If they came down to earth they would get a lot more sales in the PC department.
As it is, anything you can do on a Mac you can do on a PC, usually for cheaper. The differences are irrelevant, as they are just that; differences. It's like comparing cats to dogs. They're both pets, but they're different in the way they act. I'm in no way saying that certain Mac products, such as the Mac Pro towers, aren't worth the money, it's just that you can, ultimately, build one with a Windows install for cheaper. There is no debate in that area. 族---族

If people are willing to spend that much on a computer to write their personal diary on, it neither matters which platform you get.
Of course if your willing to spend that much on a gaming platform, everyone knows you won't be buying an Apple product.

Windows, as a whole, is vastly a vastly inferior platform to write applications on, due to its honking terrible CLI. It's architecture support (I assume you're referring to the win api) is also buggy and awkward. #ignoring #standards #and #making #a #new #broken #implementation #ftw
Quote: ...I use an iTouch purely because it is the most versatile MP3 player out there. My mobile phone works fine as a telephone, and I don't need anything more, so why bother paying an extra ú10 a month for an iPhone contract, and the additional markup for the phone too?
The extra cash is for the convenience of carrying around one (usable) device instead of two (your ipod touch and a cell phone). I do not find that my old cell (Nokia) was any better of a cell phone than my iphone (arguably it was much worse though). However, I do find myself constantly using the 3G service at a restaurant while my friends that still have ipod touches are scrambling to see if they can locate some free wifi.
It's worth it.
Quote: Macs are different to PCs. Neither is 'better' in the UI department, same goes for Linux.
I dunno, I think you're smoking something if you say the general Linux UI isn't worse than both Windows and Mac. It's written by developers, and for developers - and developers make terrible UIs - ask any QA dept. ;-) And as for Apple vs "PC" UIs: all I have to do is point you at the mobile market to show how false that is. The iphone isn't really all that hot **** when it comes to hardware - it's all in the UI. And before the iphone, "smartphones" had ****ing terribad UIs.
That's the Apple difference - and you can expect to pay for it.
Quote: If they came down to earth they would get a lot more sales in the PC department.
Yeah, I'm not going to try and tell you that a Mac is cheap. I'm going to tell you that when you buy a Mac, you expect it to have a good UI and simply work. It does that. Neither Windows or Linux both have a good UI *and* simply work. But, I won't deny that they'd get alot more sales with cheaper hardware - I know I'd buy a macbook if it (hardware wise) was vaguely competitive with Dell.
Quote: As it is, anything you can do on a Mac you can do on a PC, usually for cheaper. The differences are irrelevant ... you can, ultimately, build one with a Windows install for cheaper. There is no debate in that area.
No, the differences are what make it worthwhile. You're like the slashdot crowd saying "LOL Jobs making a $600 phone who would buy that LOL LOL LOL stupid, thinks UI is worth anything LOL". Fast forward a year, and the iphone has crushed everyone else in the market. Why? Because Apple makes a ****ing good UI.
And that's really what I said: - Microsoft makes a mediocre UI that sometimes works, but generally just ****es everyone off before they become part of the next big botnet. - Apple makes a UI and a platform that just works for the user. - Linux is rough around the edges but works very well for developers.
Note that I believe MS has done alot for the PC industry - but it's time to get off their ass and get something done.
