I'm an eve noob, however I've played several mmorpg's and they're basically all the same. There are several types of players:
You have hardcore players. These are the ones who treat their mmorpg of choice as their job, and will engage in large group battles. Their aim is recognition and appreciation, if not necessarily respect. These are not your concern - they consider themselves to leet to bother themselves with even acknowledging your existence.
You have carebears. Carebears want the same thing the hardcore players want, but they do not want to risk anything on their path to achieving it. As a result of their aversion to risk, they rarely achieve what they hope to accomplish.
You have griefers. Griefers have one goal: cause other people grief. Important things to remember about griefers: they do not want your respect. They do not want your appreciation. They do not want to "accomplish" anything, they do not want the satisfaction of a job well done. In fact, they actively desire the opposite. They want you to be angry, they want you to hate them, they want your jaw to clench and a cloud of anger washing over your mind when you think their name. If they can achieve this in a character with three hours of advancement under his belt, so much the better.
Now, what is a griefer going to do when he logs in? Is he going to attack the hardcore players? Of course not. How do you cause a hardcore player grief? Kill them? They don't care - they'll just kill you back. Ruin their economy? That might work, but chances are they've already min-maxed the system and will expand to other markets - your efforts are merely part of the game. Pay somebody else to kill them? That's not satisfying, because it's not coming at their hands, they can't taste the blood, the tears, and besides, killing a hardcore player doesn't cause grief, they enjoy it. No point in butting up against the hardcore players.
Ahhhh, right. Carebears. They are afraid of losing money, they are afraid of losing ships, they are afraid of being pod-killed. Fear is the path to the Dark Side, but it leads to grief on its way there. Kill a carebear, and they will likely send you messages, emails, dripping with their tasty, delicious grief. They may get the biggest, baddest, most powerful ship they can find, fit it poorly and pilot it worse, and ultimately get killed, leading to more delectable displays of grief. They may even - joy of all joys - make a forum post describing their deep, dark, angst ridden grief in exquisite detail!! Such displays of sadness and anger and hopelessness blended together is smooth, tasty goodness are truly heavenly and utterly irresistible.
Thus, a carebear cannot win against a griefer, right? Wrong. Griefers are griefers. They want displays of grief. There's an easy solution to that: Don't. As others have mentioned, join an NPC corporation. Or you could simply go somewhere else. Or create a trial account, roll a zero SP alt, let them pod kill it, message them expressing your zero SP alt's sadness, its anger, its grief, then link them the zero SP alt's API info so they see they've been trolled. Nothing angers a griefer as much as being trolled - not only do trolls not feel grief at the taunts of a griefer, they enjoy it. The griefers didn't win, you did. (you may not care that you trolled them, but they think you care, and that's all that matters) Hire a merc corp to harass them. Merc corps tend to be much better outfitted than griefers who prey on newbs, and griefers can't grief anyone when faced with an overwhelming force.
But under no circumstances, none do not ever whine in forum posts for days and days and days expressing your unhappiness. Such displays are literally a server wide "Grief me, I'm a whiny little carebear!" sign, likely to attract griefers in droves.
tl;dr: stfu carebear. 8chrlef
