That was one bad relationship, I am not the best listener but I am sure if a girlfriend said she was going away for two weeks, I would remember  .
Also if it is all true then it wasn't exactly a great relationship considering he goes abroad for a fortnight and not once gives his partner a call.

I dated a woman like that once, I used to work third shift and get off work at 7:30 in the morning. I turned my phone off because I wasn't on call and she filled up my voicemail while I was sleeping. The last one said she was about to **** someone else because I obviously didn't care about her enough to answer my phone. |

Me for example. Like next week I'll be off sailing and you can bet I'll keep my phones closed during that time. What's this supposed emergency anyway? A loved one lying on their death bed? I do it. My phone has been turned off for about a month now and I haven't checked my e-mail either(university wasn't open during july and no possibility to do exams until end of the month). If there is an emergency, people should call their local emergency line not their friends. What could I possibly do to help anyone over the phone, that the emergency service can't also do? If someone dies during that time, they'll still be dead once I come back from vacation.

When I go camping I take my cellphone even though I know I'll be in a dead zone. Why? Because if I get lost or the vehicle breaks down I can hike to an area where I get coverage. That's why I take a cell phone on vacation and keep it off.

First off I want to say that I am thought of as weird by many people for when I am with them and my cell rings I reach into my pocket and mute the ringer. I do this because I hate the fact that cells phones make me feel like I have a leash around my neck attaching me to everyone that has my number. I think it is rude to pick up the cell while interacting with other individuals.
Trust me, my cell phone stays off during vacation except once a day or every other day turning it on to screen messages. I find it hard believe that you do not see that you potentially needing to make an emergency call is not very far off from someone close to you needing to get in touch with you in an emergency.
Is it that far out of the realm of possibilities that someone close to you may need to get in touch with you. I is not worth the two minutes it takes to screen your messages and save the BS ones for when you get back to maybe catch that a family member has just been struck severely ill and is not expected to pull through? I really do hope, at least at this moment, that you all do not miss the opportunity to avert a personal disaster while thinking your vacation trumps all your personal relationships.
What if you had a kid and they went to Europe and you tried to get in touch with them in an emergency, would you be happy that they did not ever check their messages.
Oh well, I get the point that there a good number in the OOPE community that do not check their messages while on vacation. Not everybody is the same so I guess I need to try harder not to make sweeping generalizations.

I kind of wanted him to answer it.
On one hand Slade is saying he doesn't like to be tethered to his phone but on the other hand he's telling us that we kind of need to be.

If you need those few moments before your father dies, then you have family issues that should be sorted out. There should be nothing you have to say to a loved one before they die, that you haven't already told them, or they don't already know.

Maybe he has something he wants to say to you And are you saying that your vacation is more important to you then attending a loved ones funeral? If so then good for you do not check your messages.
I am out of this one, you all have shown that there is nothing more important then your vacation so by all means don't check your messages and I will continue to do the opposite.

During the last ten years, I've had two people I cared about die on me. The chances of the next death occurring slowly enough for me to get back, precisely during my two weeks of backpacking through europe (as per the OP) is negligeable. Haven't had any *real* emergencies come up either, though of course a lot of trivial stuff that could have either waited or been dealt with / decided without me, had I been elsewhere.
Some people are just so incredibly dependent, it seems they can not be by themselves, out of contact from their usual group, even for a day.
Though not nearly as bad, your "must keep in contact every day" notion reminds me of those "remote control husbands", being guided by their wives on the cell through the grocery store . Always makes me laugh how they can't even make decisions about dinner themselves. Dunno if you have those on the other side of the pond though.
The world could use some more independent souls, I think.
