Godlesswanderer Gallente The Scope	Posted - 2009.08.14 15:03:00 - [1] I think I've already posted something like this twice already over the years but here we go again. My current ISP is Demon. And while they were mostly fine for the first couple years, my internet connection has recently taken a nose dive. Constant disconnects and it's almost as if I've had my download speed capped, even though there's no way I've downloaded 50GB in the past couple weeks. This has also happened a couple other times over the past year or so. So, I need you all to help me out in choosing a new ISP. I'm basically looking for something relatively cheap and with either high or unlimited usage. I'm not overly concerned about massive speed as the line in my area can only handle a max of 5Mb/s so as long as it's over that, I'm happy. --------------------------- Custom EVE graphics \| Blog

Tiny Tove	Posted - 2009.08.14 15:21:00 - [3] For all the crap posted about them, Virgin seem fine for me. Fibre to the end of my road means that when I pay for 20mbit, I get 20mbit. Ok, so I only get 20mbit for about 15 minutes if I hammer it during peak hours. The customer service sucks, and they charge too much. But since that is true of any company, what's the diff? Reliability wise... it probably hiccups once a month, fails once every 6 months, and kicks me off for a whole evening maybe once every three years. Been with them since 1999. Would never consider changing to a BT based operator knowing they've got maybe 5km of copper to get across, yet still claim to be able to sell me 8 mbit... I think not... I think not. There, I said it.

On O2, since they haven't got equipment in the local exchange, I'd be stuck with the access plan. Which although is exactly what I should be getting now, it's almost ú10 dearer. So for now, O2 is a maybe. As much as I would absolutely love to go with Virgin Media's fibre optic plans, unfortunately they don't have any coverage in my area. To recap I'm mainly looking for something cheap & reliable with unlimited usage. Like I said, I'm in a rural-ish town so although I'm not limited to 1-2Mb/s, 5Mb/s is the fastest I can get on my line so no linking me to 20Mb/s or anything crazy fast like that because I'll still only be able to get 5Mb/s. --------------------------- Custom EVE graphics \| Blog

Tiscali are the worst ISP I have ever had the displeasure of being with, and on top of that there are many other Eve players who have had nothing but a nightmare with them. Not only were they throttling my connection but their customer service was appalling, and even damn right rude on a number of occasions. I am with BT now and have been with them for over a year with near to non-existent drops in connection, great customer service on the rare occasion I had to speak to them and the wireless hub they give has also worked fine for me. I won't say "go get BT broadband" as I don't think anyone can truely recommend ISP's as no matter who you go with there is the potential for a bad experience, but I can say I have never had an issue with BT and when I had a fault on my line they fixed it within 72 hours (Tiscali and Pipex had over two years to fix it but never did).

I had no problem with the speed of the line etc, but setting it up was a pita. Oh well guess I got lucky ;). I have been with Plusnet for about a month now, and they seem pretty good. But it will take a bit more time with them before I can truely say how good they are.

Confirming Be is great, they are ADSL2, so you will need to check on their site if you can get their service. They will also tell you what speed your line will support, mine is 14mbs, and always is right on that, no throttling. They also allow you to set a profile on your line, optimised for speed, or reliabilty, or balanced, and to set it up for gaming. And they give the option for a static ip. O2 own Be, and I have heard their service is great also. Avoid Tiscali like the plague.

Surprised no one has mentioned Sky, its true unlimited broadband (no hidden "fair usage") and I get 17/Mbs and I do download at that speed. Had Sky now for 3 years and never ever ever had a problem with them. All for ú10 a month. Ok you have to have the sky package for that but overall for Sky TV, broadband and free phonecalls I pay around ú30 a month which isnt bad at all considering you can pay nearly ú30 just for the broadband I have with some companies!

There, I said it. I echo this post. I don't think I could go with BT or a BT copper cable reseller.

Whitehound	Posted - 2009.08.15 08:20:00 - [18] I am with Virgin Media and quite happy about their broadband. They offer 10, 20 and 50 MB/s. One single outage in 2 years and it lasted for about 2-3 hours. I called them on the phone (free service) and they told me what was going on and for how long they expect it to take. That was fair. When I upgraded from 2 to 10 MB/s did they send me a wireless router, which I did not order and I had to send it back, or else the upgrade would have cost me ú40. This was some hard sales tactic even when their ads say they do not do this (I now assume this is a part of hard sales tactics). Whatever, this is all I can say about their broadband service. Their phone service is not good and I blame the local service people here in Middlesbrough for it. They have disconnected my line 5 times in two years and it took them several days every single time to reconnect it. And it is always at some box around the corner on the street. Virgin has a policy to throttle bandwidth when you use too much of it. They offer the full speed, but if you intend to use it 24/7 then then will throttle you down to a quarter of it. If you want to switch to Virgin broadband then here is their info on how. Hope this helps. --

I second this! Sky is a great ISP, Great speeds for real cheap! Their "fair usage" policy is good too, there is four of us downloading all the time and we have not been capped yet. The customer services is not to bad. Put it this way, one of my flatmates (who paid for it ) moved out so we got a letter saying they were going to disconnect us in two days time....... 4 months later we be still connected!

This I'm unfortunate enough to not have Cable in my area and am pretty much at the end of the range of ADSL (4 years ago we couldn't even get it here) which means although I'm promised 8mbit, I never get above 1.5 and the connection can be pretty flaky at times (websites will randomly time out for seemingly no reason, sometimes the connection 'freezes' and I have to wait 2-3 minutes for it to clear up before I can do anything (this has happened on 3 different routers) It's better than nothing but compared to all you people with 24mbit Cable... - Malyutka (The Virus) -

I went for the 45Gig deal @ ú30 pm approx. So far they seem good - download speeds with my old ISP (a small one called Scotnet - who asked me to migrate despite always staying within the 20Gig limit they had specified !!) peaked at 500 kb/s - with Fast I'm averaging about 800 kb/s on the same line & equipment. Plus they got UK based tech support with guys who answer the phone fast and seem to know what they talking about.

In other news, I called up Demon earlier today and they had actually capped me but they didn't say why. I suspect they randomly cap people to save on their own costs or something to that effect. There was no way I had downloaded over 50 gigs. Suffice to say, I now have stable and up to speed internet.
