I've just made the jump to BS!
Yippee yay!
I'll be hunting rats most of the time now, and even if im a blaster fan, I believe I'll be switching back to rails since range is your friend with NPC. However I need some help fitting my Thron since there's so many slots to fill (sigh)....
I'm a pretty experience fighter with frigs and cruiser, just need some tips from BS pilots on fitting my railthron.
Here's what I thought id put in there; 6*425mm 2*siege 100mn AB Large Armor Rep 2 Hardners
Dunno if Ill be using 350mm instead, or if I wont swtich to Cruise Launchers. The med slots seem quite empty and I resist the thought of stuffing all Cap Rechargers in there. I may have 1-2 lo slots left after the RCU are fitted so give your thoughts too.
Thx in advance!

I wouldn't bother with the siege launchers. Put in some rocket launchers with defenders.
Mid-slots should be dedicated to either cap recharge or tracking 'cause Megathron is an excellent ranged sniper for NPC's

I think the sieges are for anti-frig defense. Depending entirely on drones to escape a tough spawn is bad because they can all be killed before all the inties are dead, leaving you in a nasty situation.
Highs: I'd say it depend of the NPC you fight. If they tend to go close (like serpentis), 350mm rails are better because you can still hit webbed battleships within 10km. You can also do a mix of them if you have some CPU/Grid issues.
For the mids I suggest dropping the 100MN AB (won't be very usefull, even to fetch cans), and putting a good webbifier, a tracking comp II, and 2 cap rechargers.
For lows: Large repairer, 2 or 3 hardeners, Damage mod, 2 or 3 cap relays.

I would have put 3 hardeners (2x armour hardeners and 1 energized something membrane) and 1 large named armour rep and 1 med tech. II armour rep and some good cap rechargers on low and med slots. I can take on a dual sanshas lord and one sanshas overlord spawn (2x 750k and one 1 mill rat) with this setup, so try this and i'm sure you'll gank any rat you meet.

Nah, if you want togo rails you eithe go 350's and armortank or go 425's and snipe.
425's with armortank is useless. And forget the launchers.
Now, if you want to snipe try this : (assuming full skills on all fitting) 7x 425 railguns 1x assault launcher with defenders or lights.
1x Large shieldbooster II 1x shield hardener 1x sensor booster 1x cap recharger II or cap injector (if near base).
3x tracking mods 3x damage mods 1x rcu/pdu/cap relay/ 4th damage mod depending on how you end up on grid and cap.

3 armor hardners (preferably the hardners to which ur npc's ur facing) 1-2 large armor rep cap relays

4 Ion Blasters 2 Neutron Blasters 2 Siege launchers
4 x cap recharger II
3 x Hardners (depends wich NPC's) 2 x Cap Relays 1 x Medium armor repair II 1 x Large armor repair
And Dronebay full of Wasps
I use that fitting to hunt NPC's in 0.0 , and i can't complain.

dont forget to set warpin points (bookmarks) 100k away from any roids otherwise youll land on a pile of them get stuck and be owned by the battleships npc interceptors.... use a fast frig for this like a rifter or 'ceptor.

well I use the armor tank/snipe setup and it works perfect for killing npc's
7 425's (named if possiable)
scanning cpu x2 tracking mods cap charger
3 hardners (ie: 2 thermal i kenitic or vise vera) 1 med tech2 armor repair x2 damage mods 1 pwd (for lil bit of grid and recharge rates)
I use that setup all the time and have killed upto 6 mill isk bounty rats..

U may want to add a heavy missile launcher in there if you can fit it, for taking out the warp scramblers. Other than that, nice setup.

well thats the thing.. dont need it with all the tracking .. This setup is for range.. if you catch the intys at range killing them with 425's is no problem.. one at a time is all it takes.. and if one gets threw past your range setup drones will make a can out of them in no time..

Edited by: Raoul Endymion on 12/10/2004 20:53:47 this setup is what i use against arch angels bs spawns...works great against rats that comes close and not so good against rats that sits at 25-40km like generals and seraphims tend to do...
6*modal electron blasters 2*named siege launcers
4*cap rec 2
2*large named armor rep 3*armor hardeners 2*cap power relay
can tank pretty much forever, and with the propper tactic it can take 9/10 spawns...

Edited by: Jurgan on 13/10/2004 02:28:51 x6 425mm rails x2 rocket launchers
x4 cap chargers
x2 1600mm armor plates x1 thermal x1 kinetic armor hardener x1 large armor repair x1 RCU x1 CoProcessor
antimatter shells, defender missiles, ogres, rockets. You can tank 2 serpentis megathrons and a few cruisers for an extended period of time. Rockets can take out frigs and cruisers with ease, with help from drones. 425's w/ anti can hit BSes from 55km to 8km.

I've tried combining all of your answers and I've came up with this: 6*425 (dunno which ammo though) 2*Cruise Launchers (whizz-bang!!!)
2*Cap Recharge I 1*Track Comp 1*Web
3*hardeners (80% against all Sansha dmg) 1*Larger Armor Rep 1*Co-Pro II 1*RCU I 1*CPR
10 Ogres
I believe that this setup will be good at long ranges, and the Ogre/Web(Cruise missile) will be able to deal with annoying intys and cruisers. Dunno if the cap recharge will be enough, but the defense seems good. And I think the track comp will give me an edge (coupled with the Thron bonus) in not missing a shot...
Waddaya think?

Edited by: Ka Dargo on 14/10/2004 02:45:37 Very interesting thread, I still have trouble getting the right setup for my megathron NPC & PVP. (IE damage with the abilty to defend)
Usually something in this kind of setup.
7*425mm, 1x??? 1xTracking, 3xcap recharger2's 1xLarge armour, 3xhards, damage mod(s)/2xdiags/rcu.
depending on what you put in that 8th high slot determine what I fit in last couple of lows. I normally either use a rocket/assault/nosf, but I will have to look at a siege or cruise launcher I think.
I would use 2xassault launchers with defenders for ravens & guristas but they are SO BUGGED it's not funny. I wish to GOD they would fix it so you ship doesn't spin like an out of control top when you fire defenders. - Ka Dargo. [ 2005.04.10 14:41:05 ] Your 425mm Railgun II perfectly strikes Dread Pith Massacrer, wrecking for 1271.6 damage.

Seems that best results depends of the dedicated type of fight, if you want to be sure to keep you BS then as said here put some BM in asters and keep always the npc between 40 - 50 kms , put all in 425mm, cap and damage mode, then no need of shield or armor, just enought cap to take them down at 40k :)
If you love danger that put all on Blasters and hardeners... seems you can forget the shield because it need to many caps and not enougth middle slot for hardeners... ---- Sauvez les castors, mangez la foret! |

try fitting 7 350mm rails, smartbomb, MWD (keepin at range), tracking comp, 2x cap recharger. And L repairer, hardeners, damage mods and some tracking enhancers.
will work well enough for current missions.

why go for over all damage with 7 425s when you need to sacrifice slots that can be used for cap recharge? cap is life when your npcing i just use 5x425s/2xheavy modulated (named med lasers) and a large smart bomb, 4cap recharger 2s, 2lrg accomodation, 2therms/1em hards, 2relays and i can run both reps all day with my guns firing

Edited by: Captain Rod on 16/10/2004 02:41:58 Being someone who has lost a Mega in 0.0 ratting, the overall sole piece of advice is to be able to take out frigs quick if needed.
i.e. have a full set of drones plus 2x siege with cruise missles and a webber to slow the little buggaz down. As no matter how far away your BMs are, you can still land bang ontop of a Battleship/frig spawn. If the range aint right and you take too long to hit the frigs...you are frigged!
Highs: 2 x siege with cruise (Torp ammo in cargo) - may need to be cruise launchers due to powergrid requirements, 6 x 425's (Have Iron, Thorium and AntiMatter ammos in cargo)
Meds: Heavy Cap booster (4 x 800's plus another 4 in cargo), Sensor Booster, Webber, named tracking enhancer
Lows: 1 large named repairer, 1 med tech 2 (or 2x med tech 2's as less cpu required), 3 hardeners (rat specific damage type), damage mod and co pro 2/ 2 x co pro 2's (depending on cpu needs).
Cruise missles will waste the frigs, the drones will also help do that. With the armour tank and cap reserve you can last alot longer. Once frigs are wasted you can swap the cruise for torps and if the BS is at close range you can switch to antimatter on the rails and still hit them.
This set up is not the best for sniping but will still knock out most BS spawns at snipe range. More importantly it means if the proverbial hits the fan you can easily take out frigs and have the choice to warp out or if cap is plentiful, stay at short range for a few mins and pound on that BS.
A flexible and safe setup methinks. Innit.

hehe well i've hunted in 0.0 and it works. And as explained if I need to bug out I can no probs. Running 2 large armour repairers "all day" is something i'd like to see when you are giving advice to someone who probably hasn't got level 5 in 50 odd relevant skills.
I'm giving practical and realistic advice for someone who is starting out in 0.0. That is all.

I use this setup for hunting the Angel Cartel (tough bastards too):
H) 7x 425mm Rails w/ Thorium H) Named standard launcher w/ Defenders
M) Quad LiF M) Sensor Booster M) Tracking CPU M) Cap recharger
L) 2x PDU L) 3x T2 Magnetic Field Stabiliser L) Named medium repairer L) Tracking enhancer
Unfortunately, this setup can't solo take on spawns that contain frigs, but its good for sniping those cruiser and battleship rats from afar before they reach you. If they do manage to reach you, they're practically dead, so you can just use some drones to finish them off, while using the repairer to tank a tiny bit of the damage (but of course, you should be ready to warp out at a moments notice, it's not a tanking setup).
This setup's even better if you team up with a tanker, since he/she can take the damage while you pound on the rats from 80km away.
Here's hoping CCP fixes the 'defenders slow you down' bug (or is it a feature??? You never can tell).

I can solo hunt spawns with 2 x Angel Warlords (1M each) plus cruiser or frig escorts in my armour tanked mega. Fitting:
Hi Slots: 6 x 350MM Rails (AM) 1 x Cruise Launcher 1 x Named Large Thermal Smartbomb
Mid Slots: 4 x Cap Recharger II
Low Slots: 3 x Cap relays 1 x Explosive hardener 1 x Kinetic hardener 2 x Large Accomodation repairers
Its great at absorbing damage, the rails mean you can hit stuff at any range (with iridium optimal = 50k). Smartbomb takes out frigs very fast.
I tried a similar setup with standard mods but was less happy with it. You can mix the weps up a bit too - you can use a mix of light and heavy drones for the frigs and run 7 rails and a heavy launcher instead.
With a 155s recharge, I can run one repairer and the hardeners indefinitely (and gain cap) - the second repairer I kick in as needed.
Just my two isk

After some extensive testing here are the results. I was sniping Blood Raiders with this setup:
7*425 rails with Iridium 1*cruise launcher with cataclysm
2*cap recharger I 1*track comp 1*sensor booster
1*L armor rep 2*armor hardners (thermal/EM) 1*mag field stab I 1*co-pro I 1*PDU 1*RCU
Reason why I didn't use any T2 or named items was simply for the fact that I was fighting near a warzone and it was my first 0.0 NPC hunt so I didn't want to risk too much.
All in all I must say that Sieur NewT's advice on BMs really worked. I had 2 BM for each belt, one BM for each side of the belt, and it therefore enabled me to keep my range against foes.
The only thing I felt about my setup was that I was a little in between tank and snipe setup. The Large rep wasnt really necessary (med one wouldve been enough) and 2 hardners couldve been swapped for tracking enhancers or dmg mods. The dmg output was still good, but since at 80-110km youre basically out of the NPC's reach, the hardners and repairer werent really needed (dont forget that by the time theyre close enough to shoot you youll probably want to warp to the other side of the belt!).
Coupled with the MegaT's bonus, the track comp really gave me very good tracking for 425 rails and it helped bring the BS down quicker. The cruiser/BS spawns were not so hard (but long) to take down; forget the inty/cruiser spawns though. You're basically gonna miss every single shot even if you start at 100km from them and once theyre close in you really can only count on your drones and missiles to bring them down. The Ogres seemed a little too slow to do the job and died fast once the NPCs shot at them too.
The choice of ammo wasnt the best also. Hybs tend to suck a little more against armor, so Devastator cruise missiles wouldve been a better choice to help compensate. Tungsten shouldve been my ammo of choice for sniping too since it wouldve given me range equal to that of my lock range. Ogres shouldve been swapped for Wasps and some med drone too.
No cap trouble at all even when fighting/tanking nasty BS spawns.
Summary: Swap Iridium for Tungsten, Cataclysm for Devastator, Ogres for Wasps. Question the importance of having 2 Cap Recharger I. Trash the hardners and large rep for a med rep and dmg mods.
Warp far away, lock, snipe, warp to the other side of belt if shot at. PWN!

for hunting BS id use 6x425 and 2 rocket launchers with defender as someone has suggested somewhere. low slots would be pdu and cpu if needed, dunno what is needed now havent hunted BS for ages. mid slots i have 100mwd, cap chargers atm, but im sure theres something better i could use for mids for hunting bs. depends on npcs you hunt, if you hunt those that fight mostly at close range go for blasters or PROTOTYPE dual 250mm
prototype dual 250mm isnt as costly as not many peoples are using it but have decent damage with great tracking
plus 1 siege launcher and armor tank ofcorse

Yes, cap is life. If you run out of cap, you are going to either be lucky to run, or you'll die.
You also should face facts. When you NPC hunt you won't be able to control the distance all the time. Many NPC ships travel very fast, web, and scramble. You won't always be able to control the frequency and order of the spawn you chain. Expect the unexpected, so leave off the fancier sets of non-essential mods and protect your ability to maintain your cap and your tank, either by shield, or as in a megathron, by armor.
That, or play Russian Roulette.

Waddaya think?
drop the web for a recharger/track comp and drop the RCU & Co-Pro for a cap relay and a medium tech2 armor repper therefor you must lower your cpu and PG and this you do by switching for smaller LARGE guns. CRUISE MISSILES HIT UN-WEBBED NPC INTIES!

This is my setup atm.
- High Slots 6x Ion Blasters 2x Cruise Launchers
- Medium Slots 1x Webber 1x 100MN MWD 2x Cap Recharger II
- Low Slots 2x Armour Hardners 1x Large Armour Repairer 4x Cap Relays
+10 Ogres Drones
This can tank very good. Cap will flow. If you get in trouble MWD away. With larger rats, web them. open your Blasters on it. The drones can chew up the interceptors and cruisers. Make sure that everything is shooting you before you realses the drones or else they will be pancakes. If you have god cap skills, fit on another hardner of armour rep if you want to really be able to tank everything. Cruise missles can take down intys and cruisers. You can even fit them with defenders if needed. This is what I use when I am deep in 0.l0 terrotory and there aretn any npc stations around. Nice allrounder thats tough to break. Plz put some input if you think i should change anything. ___________________________________ Gallante Gallante Gallante Gallante Gallante Gallante Gallante Gallante Gallante Gallante Gallante Gallante |

I've read alot of the setups and most are based around getting a good tank or sniping... U can do both using 425's easy and tank 3 bs spawns (Guristas)
- High Slots 6x 425mm Rails (Best u can fit) 1x Cruise Launcher 1x Seige Launcher
(Was 2 seige but since the frigs now go upto 2km/s cruise are req)
- Medium Slots 4x Cap Recharger (eutectic) - Tech II is better of course :)
- Low Slots 2x Armour Hardners 1x Large Armour Repairer (Accommo is a must) 1x Med Tech II Arm Rep 2x Cap Relays 1x PDU Tech2 (if this is not req then another cpu or hardner)
+10 Wasp Drones
It is slow, but u can solo big spawns no problem.... good cap skills are a must

I dont understand your comment about swapping 2 sieges for 1 siege and 1 cruise because u now need to fire cruise missiles
Cruise missiles fit in siege launchers, siege launchers also have a greater rate of fire so keep with the 2 sieges

Edited by: OzaLoni on 27/04/2005 11:02:25 Edited by: OzaLoni on 27/04/2005 11:01:29 i've yet to fully test this setup since the patch...... but before I used to use 5 425 rails and 1 250 Proto Gauss Med and 2 seige.... So I now believe that fitting 6 Rails is easily doable, but to get the cap recharge level I want... I want to be able to run the 2 reps I stated and have enough cap left to kill stuff.....
So I leave u to figure the rest out.... to the poster.... I would say to u, for npc'ing ur cap is ur life.... so don't be scared to get lots of cap rechargers in the mid slots.......
I see people wanting to use a web on a rail setup? Why, if u web a frig doing 2000 m/s u might slow it down so ur torps can hit it, but ur using valuable cap that u might need to tank the BS's in the spawn.......
edit - mixed up lows and mid slots ....:) The Great Oz... |

i've just seen like 3-4 posts of mega with blasters and without MWD or AB... i don't know how you manage to kill anything with that, as quite a lot of rats tends to keep distance... and hunting them with 5m/s takes a looooooooot of time... Also using blasters without web is useless, as you wont hit cruisers. Prepatch setup of mine was: 7x electrons, heavy nosf 100mn AB t2, web, 2x cap recharger II 1x lar,1x med t2, 3x hardeners, 2x cap relay. Drones
(now you can put 2x LAR on probably, as there is plenty of cpu left, probably you can also change some electrons to ions)
I did never bother to use launchers on mega, as i hate caldari enough. But in the end Raven is above all at npcing. There is no spawn that you cannot tank& kill soon enough.
But there are only 2 things you can do: either use blasters and AB(mwd screws cap too much for my taste) or use railguns and long range... (though i've never fit rails for npcing, so i cannot really help with that)

Edited by: Macmuelli on 03/05/2005 11:11:26 Hi !
This are my setups:
Long range:
low slots.... 3x capa relays 3x Mag stabs 1x Tracking enhancer
med slots 1x sensor bosster 2 tracking comps 1 ab
high slots :7 x 425 rails 1 def missle bay
Named or T II modules are all time the best so if u have use it
DS : Missions ( rouge drones)
Low slots: 3 therm hardeners 2 kin hardeners 1 cpu 1 large acco
med slots :3 capa recharger 1 ab
High slots: 2x siege missle launcher ( dragon fof missles) 2x 250 mm rails 4x 350 railguns
IMPORTANT use wasp drones ( rouge drones hate kinetic dmg)
if u fight angainst 2 supreme drones ( stage 2 in roge drone harrasment) approach one of them and orbit it at 1.5 km take out the first lower drones and then start shooting the other suprem drone the one u orbit cannot hit u... so stay cool and win... if not MMMMMH
ds long range setup
low slots: 1 large repper 1 capa relay 1 rcu 3 mag stabs 1 enhancer med slots: 2 capa recharger (u cn use also an targeting painter... very good for cruiswers ad frigs inside ds) 1 sensor booster 1 ab
high slot: 5x 425 rails 2x 350 rails 1x def missle bay
njoy .......
