They're all pretty much the same nowadays. I'm an old subscriber to Freeserve and get high reliable download speeds and I don't get any limit imposed on my monthly download limit. New contracts have a 1Gb download quota per month, I think.

If you can get it - go Telewest, the customer service ain't great - but the price is good, never had a problem with reliability and the service doesn't slow at peak times.

NTL depends where you are.
Many people with horror stories, and when it does go wrong there's generaly nothing ntl can ever do about it. They are the kings at just fobbing you off. Ask the people of nottingham what they think
Me ive been lucky, iv'e had ntl in two rural areas... it's bril, 10-15 pings 900k download on the 600k i pay for....
Btw go for Nilly... It was Nildram back in the day for me, before i got cable, never any probs ------------------------

I work there our 17:99 package has 2gb a month, thats the lowest but freeserve are'nt checking anyway at the momant.
anyway I use ntl cable 1.5mbit line and I'm totally happy witht hat, I'd reccomend getting cable over dsl anyday.

Compare UK ISP here: www.adslguide.org.uk ZEN and Eclipse are probably the two best ISPs in UK. But have a look for yourself. ;-)
Personally I'm using Zen with an average of 20ms ping time to EVE. __________________________________________ >> Morituri te salutant! |

No issues with reliability for the year I've been with them. Freeserve wasn't bad either, but the download limitations on it's new incarnation, Wanadoo, may or may not suit you.

Anyone got Virgin.net??
I am thinking about getting it, since there is no download limit on one of the packages, and no fixed contract like most of the others (i am probably moving soon and the GF already has it).
I would welcome any advice..

No one going for BT Internet?
Its what I am on, and it isn't that good. I'm supposed to have a 1 GB limit, but I have no idea when/if I will reach it. Speed is good, and I haven't had need to use the customer support services. Still, I would be happier without the limit, and would move if I wasn't still in a 12 month contact (3 months to go) ====================================

I am running Freeserve and despite being sh*te for actually getting the line installed, 3 failed attempts lasting over 2 months. The downloads are generally quite good, around 130k for a 1 mbit line.
One thing I do notice that at the evenings something really weird goes on with web pages, links stop working and you have to keep clicking them to get the web page to load? And then the webpage just loads? Anybody know why this is or how to solve it?
Also keep an eye on Freeserve/Wanadoo if they give you money off, make sure they dont just take it out of your account anyway like they did mine. That really ****ed me off!

Cant agree more, have had nothing but a top notch service from them, after switching from TERRIBLE pipex connection - no service, disconnects, packetloss - though that was 2 years ago i dont know what its like now.. but i remember things like that.
Virgin had some problems early this year, dont know what theyre like now i hear theyre good..
Cable very much depends where you live it seems.. some places its top notch, low pinging - but other places pings considerably higher than DSL. I would go for DSL for safety, unless you are sure, or dont care about pings (I'm an FPS gamer)
Just like to re-iterate i have NEVER had a problem with Nildram. On the occasion when my line went dodgy theyre tech support was excellent and got BT on the job right away. I suppose they arent quite the cheapest, nor quite the fastest, but who cares about an average 0.2kb/s or ú1 a month or whatever when it works well.
Nildram for two years in two different houses and havent looked back since.

Have to disagree with you there - Freedom2Surf are spot on (so far). No major issues at all and very nice customer services....
I won't go into details of the issues I had with them, but they objected to some of the programs I was running across their ADSL, which 4 other UK ADSL ISP's never had.
Eclipse are now owned by the WORST telecommunications company in Europe, Kingston Communications, and frankly you DO NOT FOR ANY REASON want to go near them. They make BT look like angels.
Pipex are okay for service, but are frankly overpriced for what they offer.
I have zero experience with Virgin.net
PlusNET are fine at the moment, but have had serious issues in the past which make me wary of them.
When I next move, I'll personally be picking Zen or Nildram.

I have NTL cable and it runs like a dream. I know contacting them is a harrowing experience (customer support is practically non-existent), but I've had the 1mb link for about 2 years and only had one problem in all that time (they were upgrading servers at the time, so it was understandable).
I would never ever ever deal with BT for broadband again. 2 painful months with their broadband. I don't want to relive the memories by writing them down here....

Zen Internet.
Very fast and very reliable.
Not the cheapest around but you get a one month rolling contract rather than the long term stuff the big boys try and tie you down to.
I can't say much about the customer support 'cause I've haven't had to speak to them in the year I've used them.

That's life, and as funny as it may seem. Some people get their kicks by stamping on a dream.

I'm afraid it's gotta be Zen - It's a little more expensive, granted. But the service is amazing, 1st rate. It's the only UK ISP that I know of that gives you multiple IP's for free (Great if you're using more than one machine on the net). Oh, and it's minimum contract is 1 month. (Great for us students). Never had any complaints about the amount we download. And we download over 50 gb a week. Easily.

I'm with NTL, but it's not so bad as I'm based in the north - I think they have more problems in the Midlands and down south. Haven't had many problems, but when they do arise it takes ages to get through to them... That having been said, their engineers have always been excellent when I've dealt with them.
Don't touch BT. They smell. Bad.

Im with BT openworld, had 1/2 meg broadband since 1998 with BT and its always been a suprb service and always had decent pings with online games. Recently upgraded to 1 meg ADSL still with BT costs ú29.99 a month but have a resticted D/L limit of 30 gig a month (i think).

I use NTL and going against the flow of what most people say it has been a top notch service, down about twice in 2 years and the service is good... then again I guess people didn't create a site called ntlhell for no good reason.

Its what I am on, and it isn't that good. I'm supposed to have a 1 GB limit, but I have no idea when/if I will reach it. Speed is good, and I haven't had need to use the customer support services. Still, I would be happier without the limit, and would move if I wasn't still in a 12 month contact (3 months to go)
i'm using bt. i'm an old customer so i got no limit on what i can download
but i'm moving to plusnet soon. 1 can have 2mb with them and they will give you a static ip address

I hated BT - very expensive for what it is.
I now have a 2mbit connection with Nildram - great and very little, if any downtime.
