Well, where I live there's no cable, poor satellite coverage, non-existent mobile phone coverage and the telephone exchanges are the old style copper wire analogue system. I for one would be more than willing to pay an extra 50p a month towards the upgrading of the entire country's telecommunications infrastructure.

Got a source? If it guarantees that I'll get the improvements in my area, the I've got no problem with an extra 50p. ---------------------------

They want to upgrade but cant because it would give them too much of an edge over other companies...
Yay for privatising a national service

thats the trouble, i know i wouldn't be stupid enough to upgrade something that competitors could just come on and use either.
It's the uk, we don't have common sense anymore.

Actually, I believe they said upgrading the copper network would be too expensive for BT to foot the bill, and that they (BT a private company!) want the Government to do it.

BT doesn't really have competitors when it comes to the copper network, BT owns all of it and the exchanges, other companies lease the use of the network from BT, so BT make money from their competitors using the network.

BT are willing and able to upgrade a lot of their network to fibre. They just want guarantees that they will be able to recuperate and capitalize on their investment.

From that story, this is the worst part.
Quote: This means that the UK public will be paying twice to get minimal broadband access at a rather sad 2Mbps - and not before 2012. Last year BT revenues were a mere ú5,437 million ($8,884,978,097.19), so it is clear that the company cannot possibly find the estimated ú200 million ($300.27 million) needed to provide slow broadband for all and then charge for it.

Man, I wish I could get 2Mbps, that'd be awesome.

bt said they would do it so long as they could make there money back iirc, but offcom got involved or some ****
as to make a return on a nation wide upgrade bt would have to up the costs of rent to there competitors which would mean they culdnt compete yadayada -----------------------------------------------

Quickly, is the real reason, they could make the money back over the years, sadly, this isn't what some companies wanted.

Ah - more recent news here
This, btw OP, is why posting a reputable source for your 'news' is useful - in that it allows others to research and follow the story for themselves as opposed to blindly accepting the random posts of others with no citation or reason to believe it other than 'I read it on the internet'

Well actually its only proposed and not ratified yet. Its not even on a white paper so parliament is not even looking at it.
50p doesn't hurt as a tax to be honest and I would actually like to see our government do the work themselves and SELL the lines in groups for various companies bids down to prevent BT from still strangling the wholesale levels of broadband in the UK.
