Dust 514 = 2 * 257. 257 = 2^2^3 + 1, a Fermat prime. Hence a regular 514-gon is constructable using compass and straightedge. Which means... um... uh...

"return of the dark light from the heart of the mother" means that humans will come from the eve gate and try to re-enslave the world of eve.

I'm not sure if I should keep my theory to myself or not ...
So notice the text in the bottom right hand corner of the screen in the Dust 514 video. I don't think CCP have released a copy and the camcorder versions aren't really a high resolution, so you may not be able to find this on the Internet.
Anyway it says something along the lines of "5:14 before deployment" - Sounds like a plausible source for the name, right?
No? well I don't know then.

I think the Chinese language explanation is correct:
514 is pronounced wu yao si.
Wu yao si sounds like wo yao si, which means "I want to die" or "I'm going to die".
514 is considered an extremely unlucky sequence of numbers in China. People will pay extra to get a cell phone number that doesn't include 4 ("death") or 14 ("going to die").
My alternative explanation is that CCP just came up with the number 514 and waited for EVE players to inevitably come up with a bunch of explanations, the best of which they will claim to have been their meaning all along.

514 is a reference to Graphical Logic and its following mathematical discipline of Existential Graphs (ref. Charles Sanders Peirce's paper called MS 514).
To signify that Dust is an independent world, yet part of the larger eve, visualized by a circle representing Dust being wholly inside a larger circle representing the Eve universe.
Sufficiently out of whack with normal human thought processes to be attributed to a name cooked up in a CCP drunken stupor.
