I've been thinking about making wreck ownership a bit better. This should fix some of the inconsistencies with the implementation of wreck ownership and salvaging. Here's my suggestions:
1. Wrecks with no loot in them should automatically be available to anyone. It makes no sense to maintain wreck ownership at that point since it's just salvage materials, and salvage is available to anyone.
2. Wrecks with loot in them will remain owned by the player/corp who killed the ship until the wreck is inspected by the owner. Once the wreck has been inspected by the owner, the wreck should become available to anyone. The presumption is that the owner has taken what they wanted out of it, and as such whatever's left is just trash. The owner gets the right of first refusal, but afterward it becomes public property.
3. Salvage would still be available to anyone regardless of wreck ownership.

to be honest a wreck and lott belongs to noone. a wrecked ship is a wrecked ship regardless of source of wrecking. removing loot from a wreck and salvaging it is just space hoovering. the guy that shot it has no ownership rights but does have a significant time advantage for collecting it himself, if he fails to use it he should forfeit.

If you don't like your wrecks to be salvaged before you can do it yourself, bring along a friend (gasp, teamwork in an MMO????) to do it for you.

Can't we just have the loot dropped in a separate can to get over all this wreck ownage nonsense?

If you don't like reading posts, get a friend (teamwork?) to read it for you.
This isn't about salvaging, but removing ownership after its been looked at by the owner - ie LOOT, not salvage.
