"Survey: Xbox 360 failure rate is 54.2%
Xbox 360 gamers know the Red Ring of Death all too well. When one of Microsoft's gaming consoles experiences a hardware failure, three of the four red lights ringing the Xbox's power indicator illuminate.
Since the Xbox 360's launch in late 2005, system failures have gained their fair share of attention. Last year, Microsoft even set aside $1 billion to extend Red Ring of Death warranty coverage to three years.
In fact, a Game Informer survey of 5,000 readers found that the Xbox 360 has an astounding 54.2 percent failure rate. That means 54.2 percent of Xbox 360 consoles fail in one way or another."

I though this was about game sales failures, nice thread anyway. Please give us more info on: game's player retention and longevity, sales for subscription-type games on console market, life span of consoles, how easy are they to upgrade etc.
Then we can just start to see how much of a failure was to select console market for Dust514, but I guess MS/Sony pay well, amiright CCP? WIS is an expansion which allows EVE players to wear leather and walk around stations.
Dust514 is a console shooter/rts which will tie into EVE and affect sov. |

I have had an xbox or two fail on me. That being said, I love my XBOX. Its a different experience than the PC. Its a better experience in many many regards.
Having some kind of Eve world on the XBOX that actually shares some things with the PC is going to be damn awesome. The possibilities are endless.

I thought the whole point of the Xbox was like to be a PC but where you wouldn't have to deal with complicated things like hardware issues 'cause it was all in a nice, simple... box?

I thought the point was to game on your tv...
Except its better because you get most of the best things about PC gaming, plus a controller, a larger screen, and the ability to play on your couch.

I play my computer from my bed, on my TV with a controller OR mouse and keyboard. My PC > Any Console. And its much less likely to fail, and when it does it will cost me less (or nothing) to fix.
Saying this, i have an Xbox 360 Elite. Only real reason is Beat'em'up and driving games (Fable II, Burnout Paradise mainly.) FPS and RTS are much more playable on the PC... _____________________________________ Haruhiist since December 2008

Lucky then I'm one of the 46% I think they fixed the solder issue with the new architecture in the Elite models.

30.20 million units have been sold since March 31, 2009. While I am not claiming that each person has only bought 1 unit and has not had it failed your 5,000 person poll amounts to 0.01% of total sales. Get numbers that matter next time you try to bash something. On an unrelated note, Kneel before Zod! |

you do know that this has nothing to do with the games on the xbox, right? Even though they fail, people will still hand them in, repair them, and get it back to play them again.

My mate had a first batch and his red ringed last night, was quite funny he just opened it up, moved something, got an electric shock in return (to which I took the **** mightily out of him) and viola, works.

The 360 has/had a very high fail rate - I had three fail on me before I finally gave up.
But Game Informer's poll was was not conducted in a statistically meaningful manner, so the 54.2% number they came up with in meaningless.
That still doesn't excuse MS from the PR disaster that is everyone knowing your console is made out of shoddy hardware.

Does the percentage really matter? The early model Xbox 360 has a problem. I personally went through three (75% failure) before I got one that lasted. Microsoft did an excellent job of making things right, even if it did take a few Xbox 360s. They even extended the warranty. Companies don't do things like this because it warms the ****les of their heart. Microsoft has the real numbers, and it must look bad, for them to be bending over backwards like this. Consumers and game developers have a lot invested in the Xbox 360. Microsoft wants to avoid litigation.

That may be, but MS isn't the one who keeps removing options from each new release of their console and losing their exclusive titles.
I'll stick with my 360, even though it already failed once. -------------------------------- CCP can patch away bugs, but they can't patch away stupidity. |

My first x-box 360 died on me but I replaced it with a new model which is so much quieter, faster and does not have the problem the first one did. My ps3 did not break but sits unused because it has no games out for it and x-box live is so much better and indeed, provides updates all the time that are so very easy to use..

XBox is fail...
The entire point int he beginning was supposed to be a cool little box that would play PC games and hooked to your TV. Then they decided it needed to be a PlayStation.

yah, that happened to me. Accept when we said 4 rings of death they said warranty didnt cover it, and they already charged me repairs before I sent it in. So even after not refunding the money, I send it in for the 3 rings with the warranty I had with it.
It came back and I patched it up to this latest patch that changed the interface completely, making little Wii-esk dudes. Then xbox live started ****ing up, making me turn my xbox on and off 3-4 times to connect.
Then it started randomly saying "This disk could not be read" even when I'm playing videos off my HD.
Then it started randomly freezing.
Now it wont go past the logo screen, hell, it wont even go halfway through. It turned the xbox 360 logo from silver and green to a pixelated green and black. ________________________________________________

Dust will probably not be released on xbox 360 anyway. If the game will get out around 2012, there will be a new generation of consoles out there.

Idk, it looks like there is still a lot of potential with the 360. Remember as far as console development goes, they can now send updates until the hardware becomes out of date, since the software won't. And that could be awhile. ________________________________________________
