Virgin are known to be evil, i dropped them long ago due to poor service and constant connection issues, sadly virgin will just cite the fair use policy despite your use not infringing on others in the least, my advice is leave them to rot in the hell that is the ISP graveyard, just my 2 cents ^^

Edited by: Akima Tucker on 26/08/2009 18:54:06 I shared your pain (note the past tense) I have virgin ADSL for a long-time, served me well. Never the fastest service in the world, but it was stable.
Then one weekend it started getting slower and slower, this went on for over a month, weekends it would sometimes fail to load google (ok maybe it was telling me something but anyway). Numerous calls to their tech support, then even had to hang up on me a few times, as they can only speak to you for a max of 20mins. Also they didnÆt like me shouting at them!
In the end I left Virgin, unless you switch to their fibre service (after my experience on copper, that wasn't going to happen).
My suggestion, if you can - drop them quick! Maybe find an isp with with ADSL2 in your exchange, since that is suppose work better over longer distances û try Linkage
Sorry, itÆs not more helpful.

Reporting in the Orange UK is probably the best ISP to go for. I'm using it, never had issues, ú17.99 for 8MB in my area, fills all my download needs by getting at least 600kB/s capping out at the 750kB/s very often. ------------------------------------- Read my bio ingame for tips on how to live and not be called nasty names by me. |

Going thru hell atmo with virgin media ADSL. From 4pm to midnight I'm lucky to get above 64k line. Speaking to Virgin gets you nowhere. Apparently they throttle back users during peak time (The same time as everyone comes home from work and wants to play online...) so that everyone can have a steady connection.... A slow connection... a crap connection... but still a connection. Waste of space. Avoid... Just need to find a way out of my contract.... any solicitors out there? advice?

O2 does broadband aswell, cheaper at ú12:50 with a discount if you're and existing customer with them for mobile products, they used to be BE broadband but got bought and rebranded, can't say i think much of the nasty white plastic shiney apple looking router they provide but i don't have to look at it very often ^^

What i was mainly reporting was that for the last 19 years Orange, previously Wanadoo, previously Freeserve have never done anything to the connection. They have always provided a simple broadband connection. ------------------------------------- Read my bio ingame for tips on how to live and not be called nasty names by me. |

you are one of the few i work for orange broadband, im on the care team, the one you call when you dont want to talk to an indian call center (care is in the uk) or you want to leave.
and in my experience people have nothing but trouble with orange, especially when gaming.

Oh i wasn't arguing against your point just offering alternatives, in this day and age price can be as much of an influence and if he's already an O2 customer i normally find it better to stick with companies i'm with :)

Edited by: zombiedeadhead on 26/08/2009 19:13:31 If you are able to get ADSL2+, then without question go for either Be or 02. With either of them (I'm with Be, and 02 own them but there are slight differances in their pricing), and all your troubles will be over, fast speeds (I get 14Mbs and it always is right on that), no capping etc etc.

And exactly how many happy customers just can't resist the urge to call the care team to tell how well it's all working?

people call through for all kinds of reasons, not always when something is wrong. quite often just to bypass CS, and get information from a uk call center.

Virgin's DSL service is the WORST broadband service out there.
Closely followed by Tiscrapi.

Depends on the area your in.
Im in midlands, have Cable 20mb with Virgin and have been running sweet as a nut now for two years.
Yet friends in other parts of the country dont get this kinda of service.
So I guess it just depends on your specific area, I personally wouldnt go with anyone else unless I had to move.

If you use any file sharing between 8am and 12 am, stop. Don't download more than 200 megs in an hour and don't download..erm, much, then your connection should be fine.
Your connection may crap out from 4pm to 10pm too, just try not to use your connection much.
Virgin adsl suck arse, it will cost you ú25 in order to get get disconnected, just a heads up on that one.
Virgin cable is better, but they still throttle your connection so you get half of what you pay for.

Like I said, Virgin DSL is crap. Worst service ever. Totally unusable for any kind of reliable gaming.
I haven't heard much bad about Virgin Cable. They are two different services.

Sorry OP, Virgin Media are a little bit rubbish: even for cable.
Guess who found a friend had 20mbit (they'd kept upgrading them) yet the modem was locked to 4mbit? They'd even been triple billing on the sly, sending the usual combined bill/reciept for TV/Telephone/Broadband and then two more which were sent to a none existent e-mail for the broadband again. Cheeky sods to say the least.
Ditch them. Ditch them quickly. Get a somewhat more reliable, honest and to a degree trustworthy ISP to do business with.

virgin cable 10MB is fine for me... however, its not so good if I over do the downloads, bit of a so un so when a WoW/EvE large patch comes, my threshold to not get throttled is 3GB daytime, 1.5GB evening if I exceed those limits I am 5 hours down to 25% speed, which is ok for gaming as far as I can tell. CABLE is good!

Had similar problems with Virgin. Technical support stonewalled me with 'We don't support online games'. So I quit and went with TalkTalk and the improvement was staggering. No more lag on vent either.
I ran pingplotter for a month before I quit and the problem was consistently on the last two hops of their network. Their throttling policy is implemented quite badly. Although I don't fileshare and would consider myself a low bandwidth user, I was subject to throttling at peak times. Else their network is just crap and can't handle the load.
btw - get a program called pingplotter. Download the full 30 day trial version and run it. You'll notice that all the delays seem to occur within the Virgin network.

Lots of people will tell you to get cable but if your on ADSL odds are its becasue you cant get cable, I am on Virgin ADSL becasue im not in a cable covered area.
I am approx 4km from the exchange on an alluminium pair, not copper and although my average speed sucks and virgin are certainly not the best isp in the world i dont get major problems playing eve, downloading, torrenting etc
Might be worth while checking, if your running off a router, that somone isnt tapped into your wireless (Client List in router webpage), anyone else permitted to be on the network isnt torrenting, uploading or downloading or even just sitting on myspace etc.
IP blocking software like peer guardian etc can cause connection problems also.
