DSL means Digital Subscriber Line
ADSL means Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line (the Asymetric simply means that your download rate is different to your upload rate, indeed all commercial broadband services in the UK are ADSL, cable or not)
Both of these terms make no reference to the physical properies of the line. Cable or Telephone wire.
The fact is through telephone wire your entering a network where your ISP has very little control therfore the blame cannot be placed 100% onto your ISP.
There is a strong possibility that if you switch ISP's you will have the same problem.
First I would have a friend bring around a PC and eliminate the possability that its your computer, or even your router.
After this I would place a technical support call to your ISP.
Again, this is what you should do with ANY broadband ISP giving you problems, simply rage quitting can potentialy cause you more downtime.

Nah i'm on cable with them as well and it sucks balls, works fine alot of the time but then i get split second d/c's a lot, just enough time for my programs to all d/c after 5 minutes of trying to find out where their connection went.
Phoning tech support and complaining got them refusing to send an engineer out, and tell me i'd get a better more stable connection if i upgraded to 20meg instead of 10. Which sounded to me like he was just trying to trick me into paying more money for a ****ty service.
It actually d/c'd while i was talking to him, that might have been because he was doing the remote check thing on my modem or whatever. But after that call it stopped doing it all night, and it can't be because i'm sharing the connection, because it happens at 3am when i'm the only one awake as well.
