Use a 'cane.
AB is not really required if you:
1. Bookmark a wreck in each room (while you're shooting).
2. Turn in mission.
3. Swap to salvager.
4. Jump back to your bookmarks that are no longer deadspace.
5. Notice that your wrecks are gone to ninja salvagers because you left too long, and they as well had it bookmarked
6. No Profit

Speeds are like this:
MWD frigate > MWD destroyer >= MWD cruiser > MWD BC > MWD BS

Hurri is the best so far for me. Catalyst up to lvl3's then I had to switch to Hurri for lvl4's since loot can be quite alot.
both setups use 4 tractors and 4 salvagers.
All lows filled with cargoII's
Mid I only used 10mn afterburner for both setups. (Catalyst was a bit to fast with it but it works perfect with the hurri. I can still outrun my tractors with the Hurri.)
I really hope CCP gives us a deticated salvage ship. Tractor bonus with cargo bonus maybe.
If I ever get rich maybe I will build a Golem salvage ship.(Time saved would be hard to justify the cost though)

The MWD can be activated in certain areas, in which case its not allowed I use the ab, its worked pretty good for me so far.
A destroyer is faster but lacks the cargo space you will need when lvl 4's are available to you.

I'm also a fan of the Catalyst destroyer salvager. I have been using it to salvage L4 missions for quite some time and it is very efficient.
My setup looks like this:
Catalyst (Gallente Destroyer)

High Slots
Small Tractor Beam 1, x4
Salvager I, x4
Mid Slots
1MN Afterburner II
Cap Recharger II x4
Low Slots
Expanded Cargohold II, x3
Rig:
Small Cargo Expander I, x2
I call it the "Dyson Animal", because it is that effective as a vacuum cleaner. 1260.9m3 capacity, not bad for a destroyer; over 500m/s on the AB.
The cap rechargers are there because you will run out of cap fast with all 8 high slots going, without them. It will occasionally run out of cap if you're salvaging a lot and can turn the salvage units onto a new wreck the moment they are finished with the last one. I use 2 salvagers per wreck, so salvaging 2 wrecks at a time, in most circumstances, it enables me to keep moving when wrecks are spread out.
I also use the tractor-locked jet can trick as mentioned above, it's a good idea and makes sure you don't lose anything to cargo limits on the occasional mission where you will overrun the hold size.

Heh, the "is Cane or Cat a better salvager" argument can't really be settled conclusively.
Both boats are pretty close in performance and whether each does better is quite situational and depending on playstyle, single/dual account, skills, amount of mission loot by faction/rat type etc etc.
People can get pretty fond of them as salvaging can be quite satisfying. Wrecks->ISK. What a nice feeling...

Not sure about missions, but hisec angel frigates drop Alloyed Trit Bars.

Not when I do it on the fly, but certainly when I'm coming back with dedicated ships. If you've got a wreckball, it really doesn't take much extra time, and sorting the wrecks is it's own hassle. Call me OCD if you want, but it just feels wrong to leave the job half done.

for lvl 4 i suggest a hurricane
for lvl 3 i also suggest a hurricane unless its too much isk for you. Stabber also works
