Money sinks are good. Can't have too many of them. Yay for Fuel. Boo if it costs too much bandwidth. Make it a daily or weekly chore instead if that helps save on data transfer. Heck, make ship power core recycling occur at 5pm gmt every thurday for everybody if it helps. Those not in a servicable station get on a nasty timer which does end up using some bandwidth and causes a little stress for the pilot.

Edited by: Paigan on 22/10/2004 14:23:12 I just wanted to add that any "crew" or something (as it can be read in those short stories from time to time) is absolute bull****. (<- edit: hehe, i like that censoring of the word s-h-i-...)
What are crews needed for nowadays? Mostly not for operating with the ship. But simply for repairing, doing maintenance and stuff. And even this is just because the (waterborne) ships of today are out on sea of month and cant get into an harbor for maintenance.
So. With one single captain controlling the ship via a high efficient neural interface, with thousands of years of additional development in computer science and stuff, ship-intern robots (doing the simple hardware stuff and so on), it would be an totally ridiculous thought of Spaceships (even Battleship sized ones) having a "crew" consisting of human beings. Maybe a 'crew' of some 1000 repair droids, okay.
But humans: lol.
Come on people, just be a bit creative of future potential of science and technology and stop thinking of a world that is "today but in space"

I wonder do drones look out the windows to enjoy the view of the planets? I think a crew would be a reasonable idea, it is something which would need to be considered very carefully of course so that they get the balance between a crew and technology correct. I have come up with an idea which might deal with this:
Apocalypse Req: 500 Crew
In essence you could hire crew to man ships for you and go to war with multiple ships? I mean I really don't know which way I would turn here, in some aspects it is very good and in others it is very bad. It would allow for battles on much grander scales that much is certain. Perhaps an idea of hiring other players to man your ship, eg Your the main pilot - but you have 3 other players controlling weapons systems. Course this would only be of use in much bigger ships than probably even a BS but it is indeed a thought. With crew it is also a good idea but will never happen whether people would enoy it more or not for the simple reason that it would make alt characters obsolete, thus meaning less money for CCP. Sadly profits have to come first in any business. :)

By this logic, we don't even need pod people. We already have unmaned vehicles in real life. Why after thosands of years of developemnt would we still need human pilots at all? The Amarrians don't need slaves either, than could build machines that do the same thing more efficently and with less maintence. And why use machines for crews anyway... we could all fly organic ships like the Lexx and blow up planets with a single shot and what not.
Becasue if we take it to extremes, it becomes dull and lifeless. It takes away from the richness. Suspended belief only goes so far. Pod people I can buy for frigates, not for cruiser and battleships.

the intention was - i think - that we assume all ships already have a standard crew...
but its possible to buy "better training" for crews which last until a certain time (like hiring efficiecy experts or some such thing)
basically they want "implants" and "boosters" for ships.
implants for people == crew for ships boosters for people == moral boosting/special fuel for ships Interstellat Cartographic League - Cen Varis |
