So, after years and years of producing this game, they finally release it.
I remember when Neocron was in beta (Same time as EVE but Neocron was way more intresting thus I played it) and bought it at the end of beta to play game itself. It was good and one of the best Cyberpunk MMO's out there. But time drove past Neocron and Fallen Earth was reported to be coming soon - well their soon was 6 years.
Now I bought my copy of this game after playing 2 hours of beta and was wondering if I did right thing or not. Anyone played beta more? Is it good replacement for Neocron?

Played the beta for a couple of weeks and have to say I'm impressed.
The combat is way better than most other MMOs out there, I like the way they did the crafting and it felt to me like the sort of game that rewards intelligent play.
It was certainly funny listening to all the ADHD kids whining in chat cause they didn't have the patience needed to figure it all out (example - ammo: in the early game selling loot to the NPCs and buying ammo from them is a good way to go broke - figure out how to craft your own from what you scavenge on the way and you'll have plenty)
I like the fact they're planning on a single server approach and the way the client handled the 'end of beta' party with the sheer number of characters there was pretty cool - hundreds of players in one location and my client still managed to keep up a usable FPS right in the middle of it (even if we did crash the server ). Needs a fairly hefty system to do it tho - my 2.83Ghz quad core sat at 60-80% on all 4 cores most of the time whilst playing. At that tho the late beta client maintained a steady 50-80 fps out in the world and rarely dropped below 30 in town with 8xAA and ultra high textures on a GF9800 which isn't a terribly high end card these days.
There was something about the setting that appealed to the RP'er in me too which I didn't expect tbh. Lots of evidence around the world of the civilisation that has fallen
From the comments etc in game it seems like a game that's going to generate a lot of divided opinion - it certainly isn't going to be everyone's cup of tea.
At this stage the jury is still out on how long I'll play it for but any MMO that tries to break the WoW clone mould deserves a chance so I'll be there on early-access and see how it goes

I get from now until launch free play and another 30 days on top of that so that's about 40 days of trial.
And damn you OP for linking this game! My sleep schedule is all sorts of ****ed up now. I don't think I've spent this much time on a game in a long time. Also you learn to look past the eye candy real quick and see how great the game is deeper down.

Well after 8 hours of downloading yes. And you have to kind of baby sit the download, usually mucks up when you have about 2 gigs left.
And with the preorder now you can get either a preorder horse or atv. I went with the atv but honestly the horse is probably the better choice. Not only does it look sweet they don't run out of gas nearly as quick as the atv. Currently you can give these to only one character but they be changing that.

For background a virus breaks out in the middle east and starts spreading at an alarming rate. Panicking, riots ensue, military's clash, then nukes are dropped blah blah blah.
You are a clone in the Hoover Dam. The group that runs the joint has been making you for spare parts and experiments. One of the techs grew a heart and helps you escape during an invasion. In the end though you are forced to ride an atv with a bomb on it as far out of the dam as possible and you die. This part is essentially the tutorial.
4 years later you wake up again and the same tech basically tells you that something happened to the cloning tanks and while you are still a clone you are dieing. Plus your genes got messed up in the process (i.e. you are level 40 in the tutorial but now you're level 1.) so you are tasked to try to fix all that and along the way you learn how to live in the outside world.
<Deep breathe>
So, there are no set classes but there are 'guides' to kinda help you along a chosen path. You can be a crafter, gunslinger, rifleman, brawler, etc. Like I'm trying to build up rifles and pistols or range to be more specific.
And then there are crafts. Armorsmith, Weaponsmith, Ballistics, science, nature, food. I'm sure I'm missing something. There is no limit on what you can take and I strongly suggest you take anything you can get your hands on. Building ammo and armor is far cheaper than buying it, especially since idiots in the auction house are selling supplies for more than the regular merchants.
What I like about crafting is you can do it while you do missions or pvp, kind of like in eve except that you are the lab, the supplies must be on you. You can also build a queue and it even crafts when you log off. It also takes time to craft. I was so proud after gathering the materials and books I needed to build my first real gun (you start with zip guns), and spent 5 hours putting them together (that includes gathering materials and such). Of course I had no ammo for them but I had 2 pistols gosh darnit.
Next you have mutations and I'm still kind of sketchy on this part. But essentially you have defense, offense, healing, and buffs and you can talk to the mutant guys to beef these area's up.
For leveling You've got you level and AP bar. The level bar has like 10 dashes. Each dash completed generally gets you 2 AP. AP are used to increase skills and stats. Missions can also give AP. I also found that sometimes you gain points in Skills just by using an items associated with it.
I haven't tried rvr yet. hell I don't even know where it is. But you can use vehicles, and you CAN bring a knife to a gunfight and still win.
The game is a single server but its not completely open rvr. To my knowledge there are no battlegrounds or scenarios, just the main area to fight in.
The setup is half standard MMO, half FPS (twitch) and its really fun if you ask me.

And you need a freakin' quadcore and 2x gfx cards to play it smooth in cities...
Someone should really teach them to optimize their code. I can play FO3 decently with this crap comp., but getting like 5-8fps in some towns in FE, even in closed beta with only few other players around. I don't want to imagine what it'll be when it goes live.

No Email...seriously?
@ MD - Thanks for the explanation. The description you gave makes it sound quite interesting, particularly the 'classless' classes and the crafting. How is gameplay though? Particularly, how is it while soloing and while in a team? It's interesting to see the different games cater for those who solo, teamplay and so on. It's a tough thing to get right. So far, the sidekick/lackey system in CoX, and Guild Wars henchmen is among the most innovative and useful. Is there any way for higher level players to play with noob friends?
You mentioned the APs, but what happens when you level? How unique is your character compared with others running around? From above descriptions, it sounds like the game engine isn't really 'optimised' either. How are GFX/sound? -------------

First off for Benco and crew having issue downloading
Fileplanet download
As for level, it really doesn't do much other than be a marker as to where your at. Most of your ability is based on How you have your AP set, what you wear, and what quality weapon you fight with (and if you have Parkinson's or not.)
Take my character (Durty Harry for any who want to look me up in game), my rifle skill, pistols skill, and armor is pretty well up there, but my melee is non existent. In my abilities tab my coordination and perception are also pretty high which are needed to improve both of my shooting skills. But due to the restricting armor that I'm wearing my coordination is actually down a few points (the armor is meant more for melee fighters). On the same side if I wear an eyepatch or 3d glasses my perception would get screwed to hell as opposed to wearing safety glasses.
I bring that up because one friend and I were helping the 3rd of our trio last night since he was able to get in finally. 2 of us are level 7 and one is level 1 which still isn't too far apart. As far as I can tell they do not have anything like in AOC where a high level can mentor a lowbie so at some point I'm sure the lowbie will struggle unless you PL him, but then he may miss out on missions that give AP.
Solo play is kind of possible. I say kind of because there are so many people in the first few towns its almost impossible to be solo. I prefer to go in the middle of no where to salvage and sure enough I still find some guy who shows up and mines everything within 10 yds of me. Now I've noticed it tends to be a bit quieter during Europe's prime time so some of you may not have this issue (I played until the sun came up last weekend). I will say the mobs can be tough, especially when they call friends and you get swarmed. As for group play it is MUCH easier, and you can get group tactics for a skill, but just be sure to coordinate where everyone is as I'm pretty sure I've pumped more lead into the back of one friends skull last night than the mobs. I'm gonna end up splattering his brains everywhere in pvp since FF is on and head shots do crit often.

I'm not too keen on it yet myself. I don't think mutation really kicks in until the later levels. But right now I have like a rank 3 mending so I can heal myself for a good 40 points. On the down side I can't use it again for a long time.
But the basics that I've seen is that the mutations usually have a skill equivalent. H2H may use the speed and armor, Range would go for heal and disrupt, so on and so forth. I also know that different clans specialize in different mutant abilities.

If I had fraps I could have had one yesterday. Ragdoll tends to make the dead bounce around a bit and the other day I was killing bladedancers or bladesingers and one of them flopped a few times then ended up with her face in the dirt and her ass in the air.
So I did the only logical thing I could think of, ran up behind her and did the smack that booty dance.

The game is not pretty - its odd, the GFX are really nice close up - very detailed - but their engine doesn't do distance well. Initial impressions overall - interesting but mixed.
Despite the mixed first impression (a lot of people don't get past that), at this stage its beginning to feel like the best game I've played since Eve (!). The world is big, seamless and single shard. What I'm loving most is having discovered the technology tree :D
You start off with very little - a couple of air pistols, a crossbow and you rapidly get a horse. You can learn pretty easily to craft all these and onto basic firearms by buying books from the NPC vendors. That's where the leg up stops and each book will list say a set of handguns that can be built at what level you reach. At the top of this list is a book eg Handguns 2 where you take a bunch of the equipment or things you build in handguns, buy a pile of paper and some pens and put this book on to craft. This then goes on in the background (as does all crafting - its very like the factory system in Eve except each char has his own 1 slot one) for a period of time (1h - 8h for the first tier - I'm sure this goes up !) where you get a skill book you can read and unlock the next tier etc...
I love this system - your character has to actually do some stuff to learn the skills, and its not the 'Congrats - you built 8486476 of the first tier, now do even more on tier 2' approach and it makes sense - you want to build a better quad bike you get a couple you've built, some gears and spanners etc, a big pile of paper and a pen and spend 24hrs thinking about how to do it better...
From the start of early access to launch, the two of us playing together have gone up to sniper rifles, semi-automatic rifles, some rather entertaining hunting revolvers and (latest toy) a probably even more entertaining shotgun. There's all manner of bad guys to swat with said arsenal :D
We're driving around on quad bikes (for local hunting trips) or motorbikes (fast and fuel efficient for long trips - no teleports in here).
All of this has been made by us from the stuff we've gathered on our travel.
(Here's a list of in game vehicles you can make :
http://www.globaltechatlas.info/2009/09/guide-to-vehicles.html )
Obviously this is a 'crafter's' view - the game has PvP (faction based with some interesting plans from the devs to exoand the system), the usual MMO quest / reward system, group content etc. Having said that, that's how I play most such MMOs so its the bit I know about
