How do you guys do it all? I found out about eve early this year and fell hard for the game....really hard lol, but real life is allways getting in the way of even playing for a short time. The only option I have been presented is to quit, or at least take sevral months off before playing again. Any stories like this that had a good outcome? And no, getting rid of the girlfriend is not an option....

sleep less.
reserve eve for only 1 or 2 days a week.
skip class to play eve, you know some of those classes you can pass in your sleep.
sleep less.
did I say sleep less? I mean your in college, if you can't go 2 days without sleep your doing something wrong. ------------------------------------------------- Search: Sky Grunthor |

Theres also just taking a break. keep paying, train long skills, keep evemon up and running so you know when to log in to put another skill or 5 in your queue. play during breaks or 3 day weekends or something.
You could also put it on a laptop and play durring class. good enough laptop and play in windows mode so you can switch back and forth with notes, powerpoint, whatever.
oh... and sleep less. ------------------------------------------------- Search: Sky Grunthor |

It's an MMO and you have a life.
By it's very nature the game is a time sink, that's how it works. That's what underpins it's very design and there's no getting around that.
By having a life you can't ever commit enough time to reach the 'high end' of the game that other no-lifers can. You therefore have to resign yourself to the fact you can only dabble in the MMO.
Once you realise this you can start having fun doing what you know you can do and stop stressing about the things you'll never be able to do or have.
CCP offer you the option of buying isk off the guys who can commit all their time to the game and can sell their time to you so they can play for free. This is how CCP's MMO has managed to attract the 'I have a life' player, whereas it used to be just for the hardcore no-lifer.
Have fun doing the things you can.

Be really smart with your ISK... after a bit of market magic, i now make just under 2B a week for about 2 hrs work.
Of course... it's taken me about 6 years of playing to get to the first 20B that allows me to do this.
But honestly, stuff is CHEAP in Eve these days. I imagine very few of you had to spend hours mining in a Thorax, to afford an Armageddon so you could spend even MORE hours mining to save up for CU Vapor Mining Lasers (they used to cost about 10 - 20M each which back then was INSANE.)
Weeeee! Good times!

Will I regret not being the best eve player I could be in 20 years?
Or will I regret doing poorly or failing college and/or losing that girlfriend in 20 years?

1) There is no best. There's always someone better skilled at something than you.
2) Yes, you will regret it.
I'm also in college, but I find time to play. It's not difficult if you can manage your time wisely.

While ice mining you can.
have fun with your gf do hw write a symphony read war and peace have fun with your gf study for a test have fun with you gf.
seriously with cycle times on the lasers of up to 10 mins, you wont need to be all that attentive to eve. Yes i know ice mining sucks but....... you can still play eve, have fun with the girl, and do school. plus you will be doing the eve community a favor by providing us capital pilots with lots of valuable isotopes. --------------------------

Moderation is the key to happiness. I have a wife, two kids, a dog, career, other hobbies etc etc. You just have to learn to moderate your activities a bit better. It's a key life skill. Adults can't afford to become obsessed over video games without losing all those other things, ultimately. Just prioritize and go with it.

A huge percentage of the time that people play the game is occupied by isk making. Utilize your time wisely and try trading. Check your orders a few times a day and use your saved time doing fun things like PvP.
Doing this allows for great isk making ( bought a Nyx and Aeon) and ample time for PvP.
Best of luck to you, cheers.

KEEP SKILLS TRAINING KEEP SKILLS TRAINING and to make it sink in... KEEP SKILLS TRAINING
if real life gets in the way as it always does, and if you can afford to keep the sub going, just keep on training dude, then when you come back you will have new ships available for you to try and will be more fun. Also with the addition of the skill queue, only need a 5 minute check in every day or so to switch skills

You should emotionally abuse your GF over the course of several months till she doesn't have a high enough self esteem to leave or complain about anything you do. Once you do this and get her to do some of your schoolwork you'll have plenty of time to play EVE.

Finally a topic worth replying to...
I'm 33 work full time, go to school full time, and have a girlfriend with a 5 year old son. My typical day starts at 7:30-8 am and I don't usually make it back to bed till about 1:30-2am.
When do I play you ask? The short answer is never. I never have enuff time to commit to any sort of group activity like PvP. I never have the time to run anything more than one (1) as in less than two (2) but more than zero (0) L3 mission. It's becoming harder and harder to justify spending the ~$45 for a 3 month sub, I've already let 2 of my 3 accounts close as I don't have any time for them.
So to answer your question we...err I don't "Do it all". I have responsibilities and obligations that are far more important than my desire to play an internet spaceship game.
That said I really miss being able to play . I still manage to sneak in a few (1-3) hours of playing a week here and there, mostly when I should be studying or I'm at work at night and it's just me there. -------------------------------- As a Freelancer...scratch that Originally by: Shar Tegral Stop projecting your out of game beliefs of what society should be upon the rest of us.

Pay attention to her BEFORE you start to play (ideally leaving her in a state of forgetful bliss).
Use a laptop and play in a window.
Trade to make your money. The best feeling is logging on after a few days and seeing you've made a billion :)
Make full use of weekends and holidays.
Keep the skill training going, as suggested many times above.
Work towards a profession which will give you opportunities to play at work.

Up until a couple of months ago I was going to college for a couple of nights a week after work, combined with the college work out of college didn't leave much time for gaming. You just have to look at how you use your time and where you can make economies. Getting work done in lunch breaks, if you don't drive everywhere see if you can get stuff done while travelling. Just generally try to streamline you life. Even if you don't use the time saved to game, you be more relaxed as a result.
If your GF is taking up all your free time with stuff she wants to do, have a word with her. Explain that you need 'ME' time. Encouraging her to take up an activity that doesn't involve you can work very well if you can pull it off.

Don't ever grind for *anything* in a video game. If it isn't fun, don't do it. This includes generating ISK. It also includes "frog kissing" for status. As others have said, this means that you'll never be the top of the pecking order in EvE. Of course that's a good thing, not a bad thing.
Adjust your game objectives to prioritize fun, and exclude (or minimize to acceptable levels) everything in-game that's not fun.
Spend as much time as is appropriate on the game as a *hobby*.
If the numbers don't work out after this, stop playing the game. Real Life matters. EvE is just entertainment.

And seriously, keep your skill training up. Keep in mind that if you're still young, this girlfriend isn't the last one you'll ever have. Especially if she doesn't game and you game ALOT. I've yet to see one of those relationships work. |
