So I've been toying around with a guitar for the past month or so and I'm trying to learn the basic rhythm of Hold On by Limp Bizkit. It has a couple of hammer on and pull off parts in it and I'm struggling. The problem I have with these techniques is that the instant I pull my finger from the metal bit on the neck of the guitar, my finger mutes the chord. So how is a hammer on/pull off supposed to work if my finger mutes the chord? Do I just need to do it with super human speed? What am I missing here? I've looked at a bunch of youtube videos and they just explain the motions of what you're doing, not how your finger goes about not muting the chord. _______________________________________ Don't worry aboutit. |

First, lol Limp Bizkit, but I listen to random **** myself, so whatever.
Second, I'm preety sure you don't put your finger on the fret dividers, you put it between them on the frets themselves, this will give you a cleaner sound unless the song demands it.
Second, you just need to do a clean and quick pull off straight up, not across. Practice and you'll get better at it. ________________________________________________

The basic idea is to perform the HO/PO while still holding the chord position. Hit down on the string and pull it off again according to the rhythm of the notes. I don't know the song, but this technique is pretty standard. If you haven't been at this for long, you probably need to work on finger dexterity, but stick at it, it does get easy eventually. As the previous poster mentioned, don't ever touch the metal bits. You want your pressure point just behind then for good technique.

Don't touch the frets eh, good idea.
Practice is the key at full speed not half speed, your fingers WILL get stronger just don't stop simply because they're bleeding okay.

The note will just die if you only lift the finger straight up, you have to pluck the string with that finger while pulling it off in an upwards angle, not straight up.

These are the kind of tips I need that videos and guides seem to miss. And yea, I haven't been putting my finger right on the frets, but just behind them. I'll try the plucking thing, that seems to make sense, but for hammer ons I don't see how my finger won't mute them. I've noticed that the faster I hit the string the better the second note sounds, but I still feel I'm missing something.
Thanks for all the tips. _______________________________________ Don't worry aboutit. |

Edited by: Leviathan9 on 05/09/2009 16:03:51 For a pull off you don't just take your finger off, you kind of pull it so you ring the string out.. Hard to explain, you want to hit the string with the finger your pulling off if that makes sence, also you don't push down on the fret dividers, you press down inbetween, though if you light touch the string on the fret dividers on the 5, 7th or 12th (or any, those 3 mention are the easiest) then pluck the string you'll do a harmonic.

I'm kind of a guitar noob myself, but in my experience you'll have a difficult time getting the sound you want with hammer-ons and pull-offs with an acoustic anyways.

yeah if you're trying to get the sort of sound from an accoustic guitar that the electric guitar had on the recording you'll have a difficult time __________________

You should see Malmsteen or Paul Gilbert on accoustics..
