The following changes should be done to streamline the interface:
1. customiseable position and size 2. split inflicted and incurred damage (currently you can't really see anything in situations larger then 1vs1) 3. messages should be made shorter and simplified
I think, these changes would make the notifications useable and not something randomly popping up on your screen without a chance to read it.

I agree. The damage notifications need to be looked at as currently nothing can really be read without going back after the fight and reviewing the logs.
Also, does anyone think it would be a good idea to add on incurred damage the type of damage taken? ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I remember a dev saying the same thing many months back. Right now the damage notifications are a joke and don't notify you of anything. Supported

http://www.eveonline.com/ingameboard.asp?a=topic&threadID=1186184&page=1 That is what needs to be done to damage, so you can clearly see who is doing what in an engagement more then 2v2.. Hell, i will not see how much damahge i am dealing even i i am fighting 1v1 and target is using drones! I am not even talking about noticing who is warp scramming me out of 5 people i am fighting, or who is actually jamming me so i can report to FC for him to be primaried (yes, it is often obvious when you have a scorp on the field, but with RR BS gang it is not) Create notification box whhere you can choose size of the text, and how many lines there are. Great idea. Having the damage information in a window like a chat box to make it easy to follow and allow you to get the thing out of the way.
It would also be nice if you could see the damage your drones were doing.

#1: Yes. #2: I too would like to see the capability to separate our inflicted damage information from our incurred damage information. #3: I'd go so far as to allow us to show just the number portion of the message and to color coordinating them better.
#4: Allow us to have numerical representations for everything that affects our ship: Self Repair, Projected Repair, Natural shield regen, natural capacitor regen, Energy Drain, Energy Gain (Nos), Energy Transfer. Each could be color coordinated (our choice on colors, of course) so that in a fight, I could see that I just did 500pts damage (Yellow) which cost me 100 capacitor (Blue), took 175 damage (Red) and was drained 65 capacitor by a neutralizer (Orange) with my armor finally repairing 300pts damage (Green).
All this information is already sent to us from the server and the effects shown in various locations (mostly in the HUD) so any cries of "omg more lag" are irrelevant as it would be just the client responsible for translating that datastream to a different output format.

This would be far more helpful than the relatively long text that flashes across my screen in combat.
Being able to better differentiate between incoming and outgoing (incl. drone) damage would be much appreciated. Something like having the damage values displayed at different parts of the screen (incoming on left, outgoing on right for example) would make things clearer.
Making the damage display mobile would help alot too.

Seems like an idea long past due. Perhaps separate messages like this from the client to a secondary window option that we with more than one monitor can use to free up client space.

STO, hades rest its godforsaken soul, had the right idea: A separate channel for damage notifications. You could even set it to personal, gang, or fleet.
Just make a channel out of the notification process and if you want it, there it is.
