Ok, I have been playing this game since beta, and have heard so may references comparing EVE to Elite.
WTF is Elite?
I started playing games on the Commadore 64 (Mule anyone?)
I don't remember Elite...
What platform was it played on?
I have both a working Amiga 500 and an Amiga 2000, can I play it on either one of those?
Where do I get it?

Elite was first released for the BBC Model B around 1984, and was available on either cassette or 5.25" floppy. It was lter available on the Spectrum and a few of the other popular home computers of the time.
Two sequels were produced several years later for the PC.

I remember...
Rock Hermits. Used to love mining their asteroids and getting a Mamba, Krait, and Gecko after me. - the original ore theif?
Also mis-jumping into hyperspace and ending up in Witch-space only to be faced by several Thargoid motherships! 150-credit a kill if I remember
Fuel Scoops. Skim the suns corona and fill your tanks with Quirium.
Docking Computer & the Blue Danube
Police Viper ships - fast and deadlly but at least you could duke it out with them (no insta-ganking back then!).
...ah the memories

It and Frontier Elite are the best games ever. All you need to know.
And Elite 4 is finally in development. They are taking the money from Rollercoaster Tycoon 3 and finally doing it.
On a side note I bet CCP breathed a sigh of relief that Braben has shelved plans for Elite to be a MMO until Elite 4 is out of the way. He's said that MMO Elite will come one day though, and on that day I quit work and never leave my computer.

Edited by: Badshah on 20/10/2004 15:29:59 ker summed it up best.. thanks for the memories... I played first on the C64, then on the PC later. I still have it loaded on an older PC. Elite is the reason I started playing EVE. From the screen-shots and player stories I read, it seemed so much like a 2000s version of Elite. I also remember trying to dock with the Corrialis Stations. That was a pain, but as soon as I got good at it, I bought a docking computer! (the trick was in the approach. If you lined up with the docking bay properly it wasn't too hard to keep the proper attitude.)

It it weren't for Elite (well, Frontier) then I probably wouldn't be playing Eve. I would even go so far as to say my choice of race was influenced by it, as I made a lot of money out of slave trading. Also my first executioner was named Eagle III (as in Mk III) in honour of it.
Hmmm, there's a thought, how about photography missions CCP :)

Ummm pretty damn easy actually (there is always one eh!)
Fly up to the mouth coming from the side, looking out of your side view. Pull up when "roughly" level with the entrance hole spinning so close it takes up all your side view. Switch to main view. Turn to face the spinning mouth. Hit space and ram on full power for a couple of seconds - had to be timed ok'ish to avoid shield damage. Easy peasy, no spinning, no lining up from miles away.
Job done.
C64, BBC B, Amiga and PC versions. Worked on all. But then some of the later versions had autopilot to dock which insta docked you in-range, cheating imo
Be lucky!

For some...errr... strange reason... I didn't have a manual for Elite. A friend and I spent the first days trying to land on plantes or crashing into the backside of the stations :P
I loved the C64 version where you never knew if an approaching ship was a friend or an enemy until the ugly Krayt unfolded (from one pixel) and started to shoot you. The Amiga and PC versions with that identify option were much less cool IMHO.
Never made Elite status. Deadly was as far as we got I think (did that 'Right on, Commander!' message we got at some point mean we were almost Elite?).

On Frontier Elite I did actually get Elite, Then again my save game is about 10 years old and I still occasionally play it. It did take many years of on and off playing before it finally changed to elite.
My imperial rank is Duke, I don't even want to contemplate how many missions you have to do to get Prince seeing as I do about 10-15 missions at a time and still don't have it.
Worst thing about Elite, Misjumps with no fuel after forgetting to save. Gaaaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhh.

I was lucky and have a rare copy of the CD version of Elite 3 over 500meg. Most people only have the disk version which was 5 to 10 meg. I still play that today and those that think Eve is a big galaxy need to take a look at Elite 3. It makes Eve look small. It even had planet landings with 3D planets and one of the best missions was flying down to a military base on a planet and misplacing a nuke missile.
I also liked parking in a city next to a clock tower and watching the hands move correctly with the in game time. Little things like that made it a brilliant universe.

I remember those days, with my C64 (and yes, I remember M.U.L.E. too!). Can't remember how high my standing got (at least Deadly, but not Elite).
When I started looking into MMORPGs this summer, I found EVE, and I saw Elite. In fact, that's the inspiration for my character's name: Elita Eterna.

i've played all 3 of the elite games, but frontier:elite was HIGHLY problematic for me. as some of you might remember, there were something like 3 different starting points in the game. my (legal) copy was corrupted however so i only had one of these starting points.
guess which one?
that's the right, the one in sol...WITH THE INTERPLANETARY SHUTTLE. i spent months going from mars to earth with miniscule loads making 100 credits a trip trying to get a ship with a hyperdrive. i don't think i ever did, by the time i would've gotten it, first encounters came out and i played that instead. basically doing the barnard->sol->van maanen's star traderoute (barnard's star was heavy industry, where i picked up machinery or robots, which i then sold for a hefty profit in sol, then picking up luxury goods in sol and selling them on the black market in van maanen's star after getting a permit. crazy religious cult there, you could sell robots and farm equipment and such too there on the blackmarket, all illegal) until i was filthy rich, then bought a cobra mk3, and try to get into the news, becoming the most wanted person in the universe, and having the empire and federation make up coverstories about how they got you in a heroic takedown. |

Can anyone remember the Spectrum version - to install it you had that red security device that you had to hold up to the TV screen (it had some sort of crappy plastic flat prism thingy in the middle) so you could read the access code.

You should check out DOSBox for running old games on XP.
Frontier: First Encounters also has a good third party tool which makes it run on XP and also fixes a few bugs, and works fine with the shareware version, but I'm not sure if I can mention it here since things that have to do with reverse engineering of software often are considered illegal.

Yeah, the lensloc. Man that thing was a pain to use.
Like so many others, Elite and Frontier are the reason I play Eve. I played so many hours on Frontier it wasn't funny. I got to Duke level too, never got to be a Prince and fly the amazing ship that was promised at the end (think it was a Thargoid ship).
Docking in Elite was a pain, but it was great in Frontier. Especially on the planets with no atmosphere. Flying towards the starbase, open the radio and request docking clearance. Get directed to docking bay 2 or whatever, then waiting until the dome opened and your landing bay appeared. Landing on the planets (even just flying over them and looking at the different cities) was sooooo cool and is something that Eve could definitely use.
Anyone else remember trying to land on planets and not having Atmospheric Shielding fitted?

If there had been no Elite or Frontier I think its safe to say there would be no Eve, Eve is clearly the lineal decendant of Elite. I await Elite 4 with mixed emotians as it will almost certainly lead to the sack, divorce, malnutrition etc......

I played elite on the BBC model B. My dad made a joystick that allowed exact control of your ship rotation and pitch just to make docking simpler . Loved that game.
and its what made me come to eve....which is the closest I've found to Elite since I was a kid.

Ahh How we all get misty eyed as we look back through the hue of rose tinted glasses.
Don't get me wrong. I played Elite and loved every minute of it, But realy, when you look back what is Elite realy loved for? Simply put. It was the first space trader/shooter game, the first 'Space Opera'. As Doom brought us the first, first person shooter to mainstream computer game play so Elite did the same with space trading, upgrading, exploration and shooting. Since then many more games have come and gone, some better, a lot worse. But now the crown for the 'space opera' game has to rest on Eve's head.
We have spent many years now waiting for the New Elite. But if it comes I suspect we will at best enjoy it but it will just be a game that feels like Elite. I for one wouldn't be interested unless it was a full MOO game, and for Elite to break into that market it is currently so far behind the current standard bearer, Eve, that it's out of sight. I also suspect that the 'Space Opera' MOO market just isn't big enough to carry two games of such size in compertition with each other.
Should we resign Elite to the history books as nothing more then the Genesis of Eve? Perhaps not yet. Already there has been the odd whisper that the devs at CCP are starting to give thought to what is refered to as Eve 2, so why not get Brabem onboard and do Elite Eve. Imagine it. Not one, but two galaxies to play in. The Elite Sol based galaxy, and the Eve galaxy rejoined by the re-opening of the Eve gate. Think of the role play options there as Sol based factions try to re-establish control over the Eve based factions. A clash between Jove and Thargon, or more frighteningly, an alliance between Jove and Thargon. The scope is boundless.
But still enough of my ramblings, back to that 'real life' thing for me

Wouldn't be an issue, Just the PC version of Frontier Elite sold over a million copies. The funding that legacy could raise coupled with it's fervant fans would mean an online version would slay eve.
David Braben has said that he won't do an online vision until it is possible to fulfill his vision of how it plays though, IE maintaining the scope of the original and frontier.
Currently that isn't possible. The computational power needed to maintain a galaxy many times larger than eve while processing newtonian physics in real time for all its objects is a scary thing and that is what is holding it back.
One day in the next 10 years it will start though. In the mean time we can be happy with the single player :)

I also remember trying to dock with the Corrialis Stations. That was a pain, but as soon as I got good at it, I bought a docking computer! (the trick was in the approach. If you lined up with the docking bay properly it wasn't too hard to keep the proper attitude.)
Preach it. It's simple yet significant detail like docking that made Elite so much fun. For all Eve's complexity docking is total pants.

I think i got to "deadly" once on elite, but i was lucky if my tape player recognised my saved games after a couple of weeks... it went potty which frustrated me no end. I did know of one guy who was elite... he certainly was good at it but i never saw the magical "elite" on his status, cant remember why. Ah... the first truly class game.
