Ok, I have been playing this game since beta, and have heard so may references comparing EVE to Elite.
WTF is Elite?
I started playing games on the Commadore 64 (Mule anyone?)
I don't remember Elite...
What platform was it played on?
I have both a working Amiga 500 and an Amiga 2000, can I play it on either one of those?
Where do I get it?

Elite was first released for the BBC Model B around 1984, and was available on either cassette or 5.25" floppy. It was lter available on the Spectrum and a few of the other popular home computers of the time.
Two sequels were produced several years later for the PC.

I remember...
Rock Hermits. Used to love mining their asteroids and getting a Mamba, Krait, and Gecko after me. - the original ore theif?
Also mis-jumping into hyperspace and ending up in Witch-space only to be faced by several Thargoid motherships! 150-credit a kill if I remember
Fuel Scoops. Skim the suns corona and fill your tanks with Quirium.
Docking Computer & the Blue Danube
Police Viper ships - fast and deadlly but at least you could duke it out with them (no insta-ganking back then!).
...ah the memories

It and Frontier Elite are the best games ever. All you need to know.
And Elite 4 is finally in development. They are taking the money from Rollercoaster Tycoon 3 and finally doing it.
On a side note I bet CCP breathed a sigh of relief that Braben has shelved plans for Elite to be a MMO until Elite 4 is out of the way. He's said that MMO Elite will come one day though, and on that day I quit work and never leave my computer.

Edited by: Badshah on 20/10/2004 15:29:59 ker summed it up best.. thanks for the memories... I played first on the C64, then on the PC later. I still have it loaded on an older PC. Elite is the reason I started playing EVE. From the screen-shots and player stories I read, it seemed so much like a 2000s version of Elite. I also remember trying to dock with the Corrialis Stations. That was a pain, but as soon as I got good at it, I bought a docking computer! (the trick was in the approach. If you lined up with the docking bay properly it wasn't too hard to keep the proper attitude.)

It it weren't for Elite (well, Frontier) then I probably wouldn't be playing Eve. I would even go so far as to say my choice of race was influenced by it, as I made a lot of money out of slave trading. Also my first executioner was named Eagle III (as in Mk III) in honour of it.
Hmmm, there's a thought, how about photography missions CCP :)
