Edited by: Black Sunder on 11/09/2009 14:18:59 From my experience there are 2 ways a ship is flown:
1. You can sit in it - Meaning you have the skills trained to get into the ship but that is it.
2. You can FLY the ship - Meaning you have the skills to not only sit in the ship but also to use it to a very good degree. You also know its limitations and when it is time to cut and run in it.
An example of #1 would be if you just got Caldari battleship 2, bought a raven and expected to go into a lvl 4 and win but instead died.
An example of #2 is the same but you actually had the shield and missile skills to back your ship up and come out victorious.

I don't know the OP's specific problem, but I offer this advice:
The number one problem for new people doing missions is they try to go head-to-head with NPC in a dogfight using high-damage short-range weapons. In the meantime, they get swarmed by the other NPC and are destroyed.
Really, just use long range weapons and ammo, and an afterburner to help keep at your max range (even with the worst T1 weapon and level 2 skills, your max range should be at least 20 km). If you are taking damage, you are probably doing something wrong. The best tank is not getting hit in the first place.

pssh all the skills you need in your frig are effective in your destroyer, with destroyers 1 trained level 1s should be easy, the sig radius really won't change much as the npcs are using frigate sized weapons which would do pretty much the same damage to your frig anyways. however when you try to take a destroyer into higher level missions it becomes an issue.
catalyst is easy, can fit an afterburner and a cap injector.

I typed a message and it got deleted, so this one will be shorter.
The catalyst was actually a nice step up for me. I upgraded a few missions into the SOE arc, and it seemed to make things much easier. With some rails (no salvager), an afterburner, and a newb tank, it made the SOE missions go by incredibly quick without the tank even having too much trouble. Actually, that streak only lasted up until about the 2nd or 3rd mission with a cruiser, where I had to upgrade to a vexor, but until that point where there where only frigs the catalyst worked great for me.

My numnber one problem when I was new wasn't being in-close, it was not knowing about how to ID and kill warp scramblers. Autocannon Rifter going in tight circles like a bat out of hell, the NPCs I hadn't got around to yet couldn't hit very hard. There were missions that needed a lot of running away after a couple of kills, but it was the one where you couldn't run (notably 'Burning Down the Hive) that led to ship losses.
I keep getting the mad urge to start another new character and redo the Epic Arc to see about other ways of approaching that mission, ubt it's a long way into the arc and you only get to do it once per character at low SP...
