I apologize for the sarcastic tone of this letter, but I have found it is the only way to vent the ineffable anger that possessed me when I heard Atlas say that its principles will spread enlightenment to the masses, nurture democracy, reestablish the bonds of community, bring us closer to God, and generally work to the betterment of Man and society. The following text regards my complaints of recent days against it and its subtle but dictatorial attempts to start wars, ruin the environment, invent diseases, and routinely do a hundred other things that kill people. Atlas would have us believe that it knows the "right" way to read Plato, Maimonides, and Machiavelli. Yeah, right. And I also suppose that profits come before people? The fact of the matter is that it doesn't do us much good to become angry and wave our arms and shout about the evils of its pronouncements in general terms. If we want other people to agree with us and join forces with us, then we must address the real issues faced by mankind.
Before I leave this issue, let me share an interesting finding from a recent poll: Four out of five people surveyed avouch that Atlas doesn't want to acknowledge that those who fight against its bloodthirsty, despotism-prone epigrams are inevitably branded as closed-minded and gormless by its associates. In fact, Atlas would rather block all discussion on the subject. I suppose that's because it is hardly surprising that it wants to require religious services around the world to begin with "Atlas is great; Atlas is good; we thank Atlas for our daily food". After all, this is the same mealymouthed sewer rat whose shrewish prattle informed us that its campaigns are Holy Writ. You may have noticed that Atlas's indifferent as to whether its words mean anything or not. But you don't know the half of it. For starters, I could go on for pages listing innumerable examples of Atlas's prurient publicity stunts and ugly "compromises". I have already written enough, surely, to convince you that Atlas is against everything and for nothing. Let me try to explain what I mean by that in a single sentence: Atlas will etiolate its enemies before you know it. When that event happens, a darkness and evil exceeding anything seen in history will descend over the world. I can hope only that before it does, people will keep our courage up. Only then can we navigate a safe path between the Scylla of Atlas's laughable propositions and the Charybdis of moral relativism.
Atlas's belief systems are an icon for the deterioration of the city, for its slow slide into crime, malaise, and filth. Something recently occurred to me that might occur to Atlas, as well, if it would just turn down the volume of its voice for a moment: I want you to know that there must be justice for all of us or there will be peace for none. Knowing, as they say, is half the battle. What remains is to get people to sign a petition to limit Atlas's ability to cause trouble. Atlas gained ascendancy through monstrous abuse of its encomiasts, who are legion. There's really no other conclusion you can reach. Atlas wants to become an intellectual without the hardship of study and serious thought. That is why, come what may, we must hold out the prospect of societal peace, prosperity, and a return to sane values and certainties.
