Being a Caldari pilot who crosstrained Gallente for the Rattlesnake to begin with, I'm sorry to say I havnt even tried flying it yet, due to my lacking (not bad, just not amazing) drone skills, and Gallente Battleship only being level 1. However I do have both Caldari and Gallente Cruiser 5, so looking at the new Gila, I was intrigued.
Decided to try my hand at level 4 missions in the Gila, and I am already noticing a few things.
- It has an awesome tank for a Cruiser. Much like anyone who has ever tried to passive shield tank an Ishtar for level 4 missions (its actually not that bad) you can use its small sig radius to your advantage. Add to that the generous mid slots, its Caldari racial bonus to shield resists, and the fact that it can use 3 rigs (over an Ishtar's 2), and it definately can tank pretty much any level 4 mission you throw it in.
- The drone DPS is great. Puts out the same drone DPS as an Ishtar, which is pretty stellar.
- 400m^3 drone bay. Larger than a fully skilled Ishtar or Dominix's bay (by 25m^3). Gallente pilots will probably complain about this one, but from my perspective I love it. Allows you to carry 3 full sets of sentry/heavy drones (I prefer sentries for missions) and have room for a flight of lights to take out frigates. Perhaps buffing the Gallente drone ships is in order?
- Missile DPS is lacking. I honestly dont know how to fix it without making the ship completely and utterly broken. I'm not sure how much a 4th launcher hardpoint would break it, but its an option.
- Maybe its just the fitting I'm trying to do, but it seems to run out of CPU very fast. Went with a Passive shield tank and tried to fit drone upgrades too, but ran out of CPU. Grid is fine even with 3 LSE IIs
- As it stands now the Gila is a major improvement to what it used to be. The split missile/hybrid bonuses really did nothing for the ships at all.
- For the love of god dont nerf the drones!!! Shield tanked drone ships is what I've always wanted, and I cant wait to train up Gallente Battleship to 5 and get T2 sentries so I can fly the Rattler.
Going to go try to setup a couple PVP fits for the Gila, and see how they fare. Will update this post with results. Currently it looks fine from a PVE standpoint, except I'm flying around with 2 empty high slots.
