Hi all,
I am looking at getting a Dell Inspirion 15 with the following specs: Dell Inspiron(TM) 1545 Laptop -Intel(R) Core(TM) 2 Duo Processor T6500 (2.1GHz, 1 800MHz FSB, 2M) Vista(R) Home Premium 32 bit SP1 15.6 " 720p WLED (1366x768) Display 4GB (2X2GB) DDR2 SDRAM 320GB 5400RPM SATA Hard Drive 512MB ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4330
Given that I want to use it for playing Eve (travelling, mining, mission running), do you think it will be up to the job? Has anyone else tried Eve on this kind of setup? If so can you let me know how it is working out for you?
Thanks Mik

Edited by: Khemul Zula on 16/09/2009 03:53:49 I play EVE regularly on an Inspiron 1720 and it works fine. The graphics card does eventually go emo if pushed for hours and hours, but that's a driver/hardware problem with this specific card (Geforce 8600m).
Don't see any reason why the setup you are looking at would have any issues.

wait like 2 weeks and get windows 7? (although at this point vista systems mostly come with upgrade coupons right?)
I'm guessing you will be able to run even very well on that. my laptop has a 64MB ATI Mobility Radeon x700, the one you list has much higher numbers, that and it being 4 years later is probably better.
hell you could probably get 3 or 4 accounts going on that beast, I can get 2 going as long as I don't try anything too crazy. 1 gig of ram and 64bit AMD Turion at 1.6 ghz You're posting again!? Has it really been 5 mins?

Thanks for the answers! I feel much more confident :)
I recently bought an HP 550 notebook which had an Intel integrated X3100 card in it. While it performed well it was constantly falling over with random Blue Screens. the BSOD message stated that there was an issue with the graphics card hardware or driver. Turns out that there is a bug in the driver. Sadly HP turned out to be completely unable to comprehend the issue and were not willing to accept my request to update their available driver to use Intel's latest release. (Intel driver would not install - just asked me to contact my manufacturer for a driver).
So this is my second attempt at getting a notebook that will run Eve without tears and BSOD drama.

Why not be adventurous and get a decent computer instead of a Dell.
Dell is the AOL of the PC hardware world. Overpriced and underspecced.
And yes, I know this for a fact as I helped a friend build a computer that was far in excess of the Dell he was looking at in terms of CPU power, graphics power, and HD space yet came in at 2/3 the Dell's price. And yes, everyting was bought retail.

Heh,
And you will find that every desktop that I own at home was custom built by me (4 in all). However, when it comes to laptops, firstly, I wouldn't know where to start in building one. Secondly, I wanted something with a couple of years hardware warranty and support. I know laptops can be difficult beasts and are expensive to fix.

I completely agree when it comes to Dell Desktops, their laptops however, while perhaps not the cheapest available, are good with a decent pricepoint, and you could certainly do a lot worse than use a Dell laptop.
They're also one of the few manufacturers to have the disassembly guides for all their laptops posted on their support sites, which is extremely useful when you want to either clean the heatsinks, or replace a busted fan.

Lappy should be fine. You can probably save a few $$ by opting for the minimum factor ram and buying it off newegg.
Make sure you call up a Dell rep and threaten him with getting a gateway or emachine instead, they give you good deals.

HP doesn't write the drivers, the company who made the hardware does. Sometimes the driver can be found at the manufacturer's website, sometimes they are exclusive to the HP website. If installing the newest driver from the HP website doesn't work then you're SOL and you can't blame HP for it. HP can't force Intel to go write a new driver if they don't feel like it. I worked at HP Tech Support. I know how all that goes.
Machines with Integrated video cards aren't meant to have video games played on them in the first place. It's like trying to cut down bamboo with a lawn mower; you don't use things to do what they aren't made for. An integrated video card uses your computer memory to get it's own RAM. So if you have a 1GB stick of RAM in your crappy low-end notebook and your video card is a 128 or 256 Integrated video card, you just lost 128 or 256 MB from your RAM. So now you're down to about 750MB. Then to know that Vista takes anywhere between 250-300MB doing nothing, Internet Explorer uses about 50-100MB depending on how heavily you are using it, trying to startup EVE isn't the smartest thing to do in Vista.

Just for the record, HP has them too. In all actuality, people think calling HP Tech support is something special. Did you know that 90% of the information told to you over the phone is actually coming directly from the HP.com website as the Support agent talks to you? Just about everything you are told over the phone can be found at hp.com. And the best place to start is to go to the website and type the model number in the Search bar.

I did say that I had tried the Intel Driver and that HP DID NOT USE THE LATEST DRIVER AND WOULD NOT EVEN CONSIDER USING THE LATEST DRIVER.

Eeeek. That is the kind of response they gave me!!! They failed to understand what I had written clearly!!! INTEL DOES HAVE A LATER DRIVER....HP DOES NOT WANT TO USE IT.

EEE***K again!! That is ALSO what HP said BUT Intel claim compatibility with and even physically list a bunch of games the X3100 supports (eg World of Warcraft - which incidentally my son plays and tested on the machine with the same issues that Eve evinced). How can the original motherboard/processor/graphics card manufacturer say it will work and the HP people say otherwise? Who know the best? Intel or HP?

OMG "Crappy low-end". Sure it may be low end for a new machine but it out specs CCP's basic requirements by quite a way. Besides it has 3Gb of RAM not 1Gb...And it is running XP Pro...Not Vista...

You are quite right. Calling HPO did not get me any information that was not available on the web-site. I had to research everything myself and ended up knowing way more than the clowns on the Helpdesk for HP. They were of no use and were totally unwilling to actually help me. I won't be buying/recommending an HP to anyone.

Righto,
Got the Inspiron and installed Eve. All works magnificently. Get a frame rate of about 60fps in space with Shader turned on and everything else tuned down.
Overall a very nice fast machine with good smooth graphics.
:)
Thanks for the advice folks.

Edited by: illford baker on 30/09/2009 23:02:25 the only thing i see bad with that is the video card. it will do the job, it just wont do it good, the cpu is good, could have a higher clock rate but eve isn't that cpu intensive. i play on this video card and it does great, all high settings and can take fleets, only $80+shipping http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814102719&cm_re=3870-_-14-102-719-_-Product

Thanks for the reply. I forgot to make it clear in the title (fixed now) this Inspiron is a laptop. I can't fit that card in :)

DonŠt know about budget, but I would like to suggest an HP HDX 18t. IŠm thinking about getting 1 myself. Pretty nice machine, and I think it is capable of doing EVE at fullHD (pretty sure it is, if you get it with DDR3). StealthNet _______________________________________________
