I'm running Ubuntu, installed WINE with apt-get, and used Envy to grab my video drivers. I've gotten an older game to function. After downloading and installing Eve using the Wine Windows Program Loader, I receive the error "Failed to change to directory '/homes/user/.wine/dosdevices/c:/windows/temp/nsg8828.tmp' (No such file or directory)" when I try to launch Eve. There is no .wine directory in my home directory.
Help is greatly appreciated.

Folders that begin with a . like .wine are hidden. If you;re using gnome press control + h to show them.

Thanks for the info. I found the location but there was a temp folder with a different name. I copied it and named it the same as what the error message mentioned. Eve started up.
The only issue now is that the EULA is not displaying, and I can't scroll to the bottom in order to accept it.

Go here http://wiki.eveonline.com/wiki/Install_EVE_on_linux_with_wine
read the bit about "Configuring Wine to work with EVE ". You're almost there

Awesome. Past the EULA now. Computer locks on character load. Not just Wine, but the entire computer. That can't be good.
Thanks for the help btw.

I was at the same stage this morning... This command got me past the character load and into the hangar.
sh winetricks d3dx9
I can open character/items/skills windows and such, but ship won't render, and when windows are closed, garbage is left on screen...

Got into the game but ship wasn't rendering. I added the performance lines mentioned in the Evelopedia and locked on the next open attempt. Not sure what to try.

also getting this problem. However, when I create the .tmp file in the specified directory I get a very slightly different error (the "Not a directory" part) :
"Failed to change to directory '/home/user/.wine/dosdevices/c:/windows/temp/nsu41de.tmp' (Not a directory)"
Have checked multiple times that the .tmp file name is correct and it is in the correct directory. Any ideas on what I could be missing? I am a newb when it comes to linux |

I manged to find this thread, which is rather helpful on the subject of Ubuntu at least. After following the steps outlined here, except for creating the launcher (since it hasn't worked properly), I can now launch the game and chat. My ship does not render however, and I am still searching for a solution.
My only current guess is that I have my video memory specified too low. <shrug>

What is your video card model? While my guide still applies, there have been a few improvements here and there -- Ubuntu Eve Online install Guide Athlon X2 6000 Nvidia 9800 GT Ubuntu x86_64 |

You could tell us which version of ubuntu, wine, graphics driver and what kind of graphics card you are using.
Afaik there was a rendering bug for ati and some intel cards.
BTW: what is envy?

I'm running Ubuntu 9.04, the latest as far as I know. I have an ATI Radeon Mobility...um 3450 I think. Graphics driver is ATI 8.600-0ubuntu2. Wine is 1.01.
EnvyNG is a video driver package for ATI and nVidia (unofficial). It is very handy.
I appreciate any additional advice.

I'm having trouble figuring out how to install the 1.1.29 version of Wine. I can't find instructions through browser searches and their website doesn't contain instructions.
I appreciate any help you can offer.

patching the client seems to change the working directory of the shortcuts just reset the working directory to something like /home/user/.wine/drive_c/Program\ Files/CCP/EVE/
after that the client should start up fine again

Thats curious, the guide you said you read, has this:
Originally by: "Debeus" # Install the current wine: in a terminal window type:
wget -q http://wine.budgetdedicated.com/apt/387EE263.gpg -O- | sudo apt-key add - sudo wget http://wine.budgetdedicated.com/apt/sources.list.d/intrepid.list -O /etc/apt/sources.list.d/winehq.list sudo apt-get update ; sudo apt-get install wine
Of course you would need to change "intrepid" with "jaunty", so the current commands would be:
- wget -q http://wine.budgetdedicated.com/apt/387EE263.gpg -O- | sudo apt-key add -
- sudo wget http://wine.budgetdedicated.com/apt/sources.list.d/jaunty.list -O /etc/apt/sources.list.d/winehq.list
- sudo apt-get update ; sudo apt-get install wine
