I can understand the pew pew...or the mining lasers etc....(they are rumbling the ship) but wind? I know space is a desolate empty void and so forth...but wind?

It's a synthetic noise created by the ships computer. to make space feel more natural to our senses, or somesuch.

Simple; trans-regional foreign object-debris (space DUST) interact with the electrolytic nanopolymer hull of the ship and what you are hearing is the resonating vibrations produced when these interactions happen at warp speeds as the FOD gets annihilated and converted to energy which, depending on the ship and warp speed, can sound anywhere from a high-pitched "hum" to what some have reported as high-speed, flowing, atmospheric gases (wind).

Space isn't empty. Sure, it's far far far less dense than air, but I imagine if you go fast enough you will 'hear' the 'wind' passing by. (If you could hear, that is) However, on another note, I now have one of those annoying sigs. |

I'm actually hearing wind while just sitting still....not warping. It does seem weird and I didn't see any reasoning for it after searching a bit.

Solar wind? The space near a star will be filled with all sorts of particles much like water and air on the surface of a planet. You can hear the wind rush and the water roar so think of it as the faster you go the greater amount of particles you impact so aura synthesizes it for your listening pleasure.
Or as had been already poasted above a big plate of mexican food and some time.

Tinnitus is nothing to be ashamed of.
Mild tinnitus is common, about 10% of the population have it at one point in their life, and up to one per cent of adults have it ALL THE TIME.

I apparently have a nice ringing noise in my ears right now, and the only other sound is the fan on my computer.

The background information you're looking for is in a EVE short story, "The Jovian Wet Grave", which is as much an allegory to computer gaming addiction as it is an explanation of certain UI elements of the game we're playing :) [Aussie players: join channel ANZAC] |

Sound doesn't need air to travel.
Look at all those...cloudy things in EVE space. Maybe our ships are flying through one but we just have kind of a fog effect where we dont really see it cause we are up close. :D

Total sensory deprivation causes madness in humans. The sounds and many of the sights, such as during warp, are created to keep the pod pilot sane. It's in background info. Of course that background info says gates can only be created in binary systems... --
EVE is about balls, brains, and paranoia. SP comes in a distant fourth place. |

I can hear wind too but it's because of the noise of air being sucked out the many holes on my trusty, rusty Rifter.
