Hello there TheycallmeEd!
Rather than make you go through a link or read some pre-writ speech, I'll write this live, like I wish everyone did.
The Corporation I'm in is not the largest but it is self-sustained, and is part of a multi-hundred person alliance.
The first thing that comes before anything would be the factor of believing in each other, a teamwork focus when able, and respect for each other. Tendencies of carebears, without having the negative side of the carebear aspect I suppose. Unafraid of losing our ships, we do roaming fleets and have dedicated pvp'ers that run around many times a week.
We are based right next door to 00, and have 1 alliance large tower in 00, half a dozen in .1 right near the 00 border. We live in both .1 and 00 space, but as of late most of our flyers have started living entirely out of 00 as they are no longer happy with single-BS spawns in belts of .1 systems. Also much enjoyed is lots of complex running in 00 with blues, and occasional wormhole ops for some quick ABC.
With a dedicated vent server and a reserve industry backbone, high activity rates are normal (RL comes first if something comes up, of course) and we always make sure we don't have inactive members in the corp. Motivation is our only requirement.
We also hold just-for-fun alliance tournaments (Not the CCP ones, I mean we hold a tourny internally in 00). Last Tournament we had a very fun team bracket, as well as a battle royal rumble FFA at the end, was some nice prize money too ^_^
At the end of the day, no matter what we've done or gone through, we're all glad we have each other to talk to every day. As we, like your team, are close-knit and sleep better each night knowing that on the next day someone will Be there for you, knowing you'd be there for him if able.
So what you'd be looking at is a Hybrid PVP/Industrial alliance that puts faith in each other, yet is a very effective surviving entity that never allows itself to be in turmoil. Lots of fun, lots of laughs, lots of mature players, many having a few friends in RL playing in the alliance as well.
