LoL. Gaze Probe is a piece of useless junk. It require Astro 5 and Survey 5.. Both of which are of questionable use... Unless your are going for a Black Op. Moon scanning has been done, and there's so many map available than scanning is rare. Furthermore, since when you are moon scanning you'll scan more the 1 moon at the time in a system (most likely 10++) you'll gain exactly 5 minute next to someone with only discovery probe. Why? Because you'll conduct many scan at once, and only wait for it once you'll have launched all your probes.
If only gaze probes size would be smaller, that would be a decent improvement over discovery one.
So no, Gaze is not Enough to cover for Survey 5. Come up with something more. Oh I know, Make survey affect hacking/archeology cycles. Still not worth training to 5, but at least has SOME effect.

In an attempt to drag this thread kicking and screaming back on topic I will respond to the OP.
Yes, I see where you are coming from and I agree to an extent. It is not the lowering of the pre-reqs for any given skill that I would take issue with it is the concept of "making it easier to specialise" that I dislike. What this does is decrease the value of the specific specialisation and the value of specialisation in general. It makes it easier to specialise into many things and at some point it will cease to be "specialisation". Thankfully this is not a route that CCP appear to be taking.
If you ignore the core skills for a given profession, which are usually learnt whilst you actually learn the profession itself. Now, the difficulty comes in separating the "core" profession skills from the "specialist" profession skills. Those that are currently identified as having their pre-req's reduced I would classify as "core" rather than "specialist". Thermodynamics is pretty much a pre-req. of any serious PVPer and somewhat handy for anyone that indulges in anything that involves combat: A mission runner/explorer that pops a trigger by accident and suddenly finds the need for some additional tank, for example.
Similarly, archaeology is a "core" skill for anyone that is looking into exploration on the combat side; just as the ability to use a gas harvester is a "core" skill for anyone that is looking into exploration on the industrial side.
I already have thermodynamics but don't have archaeology, however I will be training it before Dominion is released. Why? Because I'd rather wait 4 days before being able to take advantage of those exploration sites than 6 weeks.

I'm 2 months old and i would really use the Termodynamics skill in PvP right now. It still requires Engineering 5, so you won't get it day 1. Ev'ryone will train Energy Management 5 in their right mind anyway. If you're so afraid of newbs catching up then your play skills are a problem, nothting else.
I'm happy with Archeology/Hacking skill requirement changes becouse that means i can get those soon and enjoy Exploration i'm so looking forward to. But i can see that this will get more people into it and lower the prices, whitch is bad.
