I am thinking one of the reasons the network might be overloaded is people downloading the client or the movies. If CCP used bit torrent, this would completely go away (or at least mostly) --------- The words "Exciting" and "Safe" are mutually exclusive; pick one. |

you couldn't be more wrong !!!!
the server has it's own dedicated bandwidth, the client, video's and the site is on a completely different server not related in any way to the game servers. so you would only be making it more difficult to acquire stuff AS BT SUCKS :...... ______________ Only in the Tales that humans tell, do the hunters kill the wolf in the end.

BT wouldnt add anything to this and is a system totally and completely unrelated to how mmo's work.
Neither is people downloading the game or movies in any way responsoble for latency or server problems.
But just to make things clear about the server on which this site runs, that indeed IS the same 'one' that runs the game itself and not a totally different one as said above.
anyway,
bye now

Um, it would save bandwidth obviously, as the main server would be aided by the bandwidth of other peers and anyone who decided to help seed the torrent. As far as im aware Blizzard are using their own version of BT for World of Warcraft downloads, so it cant be a bad idea.

I rather thought so. Especially for the trial downloads and judging by the people in the rookie chat these days trial downloads must be going through the roof.

I'd ignore them Derisor. A lot of the rude ones here are just frustrated because something happened to them in the game, like maybe a shuttle getting past their gatecamp. ------------

those who say BT sucks don't know how to use it properly or using it through a sucky BT community. :)
if anything, using bit torrent would save CCP tons of money on bandwidth, help people download large files quicker, and make sure the files they download are perfect copies of the originals through hash-checking.
BT support would entail almost no effort on the part of CCP, as all you need to set it up is a tracker, creation of original .torrent files, and a BT client to get things rolling.
after that, it's simple.
i urge CCP to look into BT, and to look at some how-to guides around the net. not hard to do at all.
OverClocked ReMix, the best videogame music remix site on the web, uses BT to save bandwidth on their huge collection of mp3s, adding a new torrent for every 1000 tracks that they have available on their site.
i'd suggest that BT be used, but leave the current methods of download available for those that aren't inclined to use it.

Edited by: RollinDutchMasters on 24/10/2004 23:55:36 Add it in as an alternative method of distribution? Fine, whatever, I dont care.
My DSL modem has 300k of downstream and roughly 8k of upstream before my entire incoming bandwith gets slaughtered down to 10k or so. Making BitTorrent mandatory would more or less remove my ability to get files from CCP in a timely manner.
(I'm ignoring the fact that your justification for it is ignorant, and just pointing out the problem with implementation)

Calling other people ignorant because you dont agree with them is extremely rude and doesnt help anything. Second of all, you do not need to use it while playing the game (in fact i would advise you didnt). Third of all your download is independent of your upload. You may disagree with it but that doesnt make us all ignorant. The things said about cost and network savings to CCP are perfectly accurate.

I was calling you ignorant (yeah seaker, I guess youre right) because afaik all the files are on the CCP webserver in Iceland while the game is on the game server in London.
As for your little comment about how 'I can just download files while I'm not playing the game'... my point was that the BitTorrent protocol will more or less ensure that my crappy upload will cause me to get a crappy download.
Also, if I'm not mistaken, I'm paying CCP. This isnt an open-source project that needs to pay for all its own bandwidth - this is a company that gets a monthly fee for, amoung other things, hosting the game files. When they start paying me, I'll start helping them do that.

Also if they start using their own Bit Torrent client as Blizzard does they'll effectively exclude several already paying customers who are playing behind already fickle and restrictive university firewals.
