As it is right now the number of turrets that are visible depends on the number of turrets equipped to high slots. I may come across dozens of different ships each with a different number of turrets physically on it. So each ship isn't give a default look as it is right now. The only difference would be placement. If I have 4 turrets and come across another person with 4 turrets on the same ship they just may be in different places on their ship.
Yeah whatever, you got the point i made. Wall of text hurt my brain but atleast it kept me reading.
The turrets you see on the other ship do even have different models based on their size, type and maybe even their tier. But adding an extra array of values to determine which turret is fitted where is still data that serves no practical use right now. Well, not that i can see anyway. The turrets you see on the ship though, that tell you want is fitted there, helps the PvP:er to determine what you have fitted and make the choice to go "under the guns" or keep his range. It is used excessively by the "elite" pvp crowd so it has a practical use beyond looking good.
If anything, i can give you that seeing exactly what slot layout is used can tell if the pilot has set up his highslot rack for overloading with some heatsinks in between. But that has very little use in combat as far as i can think of it.
Enjoy your eve!
Actually, you wouldn't have to work off a new array. The system already saves where each module is placed in the row of slots. All it would have to do is look up the slot number the module is placed in and assign it to the corresponding slot number assigned to the turret hardpoints.
When a 3rd party looks at your ship, the system already has to determine what module are on their; it wouldn't be much trouble to also take the slot number associated with that module and then just place the graphic in a different spot.
It really isn't that hard and wouldn't really add much of a load onto the server.
Everyone fails to realize there are many MMO's with much more going on and many more objects to calculate and they all do fine. Everyone thinks CCP decides not to do something for the simple "answer" of lag. Ever think maybe CCP just didn't feel like it and doesn't care? Lag isn't the answer to all of CCP's decisions. So many lemmings in the EVE community it's ridiculous.
