I haven't had much trouble with ninja salvagers. I do a few missions each day and i only get a visit once or twice a month. To be honest, it doesnt bother me so much, i do ask for some isk for the salvage but nobody has every accepted such a kind offer :)
However, i did encouter a different phenomenon recently. Not only were there ninja's salvaging but also stealing the loot. I saw them flashing red when i returned with MY salvager.
Also, they left a few cans with worthless items marked for me, but also a can which they dropped. If i would have taken the stuff they would have rights to kill me, and they were waiting for me in the next room. How messed up is that?

well. i really dont care so much about the ninja salvaging. I'll just move to a new mission. But the stealing and 'bait' can tactic is new to at least me.

They wanted to start a fight with you.
All said if you don't feel like some PvP just write off what's there and do another mission.

Never agro them in your mission ship is the best advice. They're set up for you, and you'll just die.

Another alternative.
Be in a fleet, with fleet mates set up for PvP and tackling, but wait in another location. When he turns red because he is taking/swapping loot.
Have your fleet mates warp into your location, tackle and deal with the flashing red(s). Once your fleet mates are in the dead space location, you warp to a safe location in your mission ship.
Make sure your fleets tackler(s) can deal with the 1,000+ M/sec speed alot of Ninja Salvagers use. Every Plan lasts until the first shot is fired. "I have a Plan, a good one." Generally means it is not. If Yellow it get a Fellow Killed |

-Most likely scenario-
Your buddies park in a random spot in the system and wait for you to do a mission. 45 minutes into the mission a ninja shows up. 10 minutes after picking through your wrecks and scoring all the Armor plates and alloy bars he finds a 500k loot item on a wreck and steals it. He starts flashing red, you tell your buddies, they warp to your location, then take the gate, and then possibly 2 more gates, and then get to your location.
The ninja sees X number of unknown ships suddenly appear in the mission, and thanks to his 5 seconds or less align time, leaves before you even get done loading the grid.
With your loot. With your salvage. With your buddies sitting there wondering why they waited an hour to try and save 10 million in loot, 5 million of which would have been vaporized if they actually caught the ninja and killed him.

OK move up the scenario then. As soon as the Ninja Salvager appears, the Fleetmates warp in. Yes choosing a mission with only one gate or none would be best.
But as other Ninja's have posted in my forums here,,,it is not the loot/salvage but the getting to kill a ship in a unequal combat.
Yes as soon as the fleet arrives the Ninja turns tail and runs, but at best he got little of what he was seeking in loot/salvage or unequal combat.
After this keep happening to said Ninja he will have to rethink it. Every Plan lasts until the first shot is fired. "I have a Plan, a good one." Generally means it is not. If Yellow it get a Fellow Killed |

Flashy red means you tackle him.
Then the two SBs that are parked in the room with you light him up.
Sure he's only in a freakin' Rifter and it took you three ships to bring him down, but it's about the lulz, dude.
Have fun with it

speaking of lulz, would this work ..
I do my mission, and have a alt in a cloaked Stilleto in the room with me, ninja goes red, de-cloak, tackle.
I continue to do my mission, turn in my mission, go do a new mission, and keep my alt circling the ninja until they log?

Meh... ninja salvagers are easy to deal with.
While I've done it some, I also like playing the other side... just pick a good high dps mission like enemies abound 5. Tank out a cap stable mission ship. Start the aggro, sit there and wait. The moment you see someone warping in, warp out. When you come back, pick through their wreck.
I've picked up decent faction loot and lots of salvage by trapping salvagers that way.
The full enemies abound spawn, targets fast enough that cruiser class and down is dead in less than the time it takes to align out.
Do it consistently enough, and you'll be suprised how quickly salvagers find more profitable locations. Go mission again... when ninjas come back again, start trapping again... rinse, repeat. You'll never earn as much but it's still lots of fun. The last time I did this in a busy mission system, I arranged for the death of 5 salvagers in half an hour.

Edited by: Commadore Wittcomb on 26/09/2009 06:56:54 just because you are talking about it i have to share my story. Me and my corpies ran into a ninja salvager. this guy in a cane asked to join fleet saying he wanted to get his standings up with Caldari Navy, so we let him in. i was back salvaging the last mission we did so i am only going off of what i heard on audio. but he apparently dropped fleet and was showing up as red on my mate's screen. so we debated for like 5 min whether to shoot him or not, and we finally decided we would give him a warning and then if he didn't leave we would shoot. so he doesn't leave and my mates start to shoot at him. he shoots back and since we were missioning we didn't have a scrambler so he bugged out. so i finish my "salvage duty" and head to the area where my mates were. i warp to the gate and i hear them say "he's back again" then i get there to see he brought a friend along in a command ship. i warn them and stay at the gate cuz im not fit for anything except salvaging. so more fighting occurs and they bug out again. i jump in and start salvaging while one of my buddies goes to get a disruptor so they wouldnt get away again. surely enough they came back again and got their asses kicked. that was over 200 mill (not including fittings) down the drain for them. after that he is shouting "noobs!" in local. it was hilarious.

Who uses faction equipment in a ninja salvaging ship?
I'm a new player and ninja salvaging & looting is a great way to make money (I wait until they leave to loot), much better and more fun than doing level 1 & 2 missions. In any case, my ship is a Probe for the scanning/cargo hold and has cheap stuff like Cap recharger I, afterburner, overdrive injector and cap power relay I + 2 salvage I's.
But ya, thanks to all the people's complaining on the forums, I was able to learn about this and quickly made some decent money. I found a Guristas Brass Tag the other day and sold it for 4.3 mil.

You Pop ninja salvager with your 3b worth Pimped Faction Ship of choice. 3. Warp in your force recon pilot. 4. Trade ship with said force recon pilot. 5. Cloak and wait for angry ninja salvager to enter mission in his bestest gun-toting battlecruiser. 6. Pop ninja salvager again (remember to loot and salvage his ship). 7. Cloak and relax 15 minutes. 8. When timer is over, decloak, trade ships with Recon pilot, resume mission running. 9. ??? 10. Profit.

How about calling them (us? Is it ninja salvaging to be probing down exploration sites, find that one has already been run, and decide to clear out the wrecks?) independent scavengers? Maybe Unwanted Field Techs (from the certificate name)?
Anyways, I spend more time missioning than salvaging, which is probably why, when I do something that might be called "ninja salvaging" (again, exploration, not missions) I always respect a "please stop" request. Provided they were polite about it.

Edited by: nafiy gnaw on 27/09/2009 20:53:55 Edited by: nafiy gnaw on 27/09/2009 20:53:26 This is not exactly new, this is similar to "can flipping", only this time it occurs not at an belt but in a mission area.
Best defence is similar, either:
. shoot the thief then wait 15 minutes in a safe spot, do not remain in the mission area with a PVE fit ship as it will soon be turned into bacon and tears.
. Keep your eye on the scanner for scanner probes and do not get scanned down for the first place.
. Use appropriate ECCM (med slot) or backup sensor array (lowslot) will make you less likely to be probed down. Bear in mind that a Ishtar + single ECCM II will be almost as hard to probe down as a Tristan.
. Before you sleep, open a lvl 1 mission, warp there in your battleship, stay there, go sleep. Imagine a newbie-prober spends ages to probe down your ship thanks to deviation just to find that.......
. Oh, and, mission hubs.........only noobs use them

Yes you are missing something (2 things actually) here.
The term ninja salvaging comes from the more generic gaming term 'ninja looting' - "Looting treasure off enemies that a party other than his own has defeated but not yet looted" (also from wikipedia), not the guys in black pjs sneaking about.
However we at Suddenly Ninjas do wear black pjs and sneak about.
Secondly, the ninjas you refer to did occasionally take part in open warefare - ie not hidden. If you had read further than the first few paragraphs then you would have known this.

I had to laugh at the timing, because it's to the point now where I've barely begun the mission and already multiple newbs in salvaging destroyers are warping in. The best time so far is 2 minutes from me landing on grid to one of them showing up. Good thing I'm never pressed for time or ISK so I can just sit there until they leave or I just shoot whatever wrecks are out there.

'Ninja' Salvagers are like flies round a giant turd... pretty annoying but usually harmless... Even did it myself for a while until I realised it was far more profitable to run the missions, salvage, and build rigs myself...
Saying that, had some good fights with them when they warp back in to mission area and I've gone and got my curse... :P although I can't say the 'ninja' in the noob corp I instapopped yesterday was a good fight...
So, moral is... Grow some balls and fight back in whatever way you feel comfortable, they'll leave you alone eventually as their losses outstrip their gains... Or just ignore them... |

So, I must be daft, but what's so ninja about it? Surely, when using the term in such a manner, you are using it for the most known use of the word, I.E: stealthy/hidden/assasin type of thing. If everybody can see what you are doing, then you're not being very stealthy are you?
And ninja's wheren't the only ones that took part in open battles in medieval times. So that a ninja, being trained for combat, would naturally partake in the battle. Even farmers took up arms back in those days when the need was dire. That's where the word militia comes from. Doesn't make the farmer a warrior however.
So, "space trash man" it is!
