Yes you are missing something (2 things actually) here.

The term ninja salvaging comes from the more generic gaming term 'ninja looting' - "Looting treasure off enemies that a party other than his own has defeated but not yet looted" (also from wikipedia), not the guys in black pjs sneaking about.

Secondly, the ninjas you refer to did occasionally take part in open warfare - ie not hidden. If you had read further than the first few paragraphs then you would have known this.

So, I must be daft, but what's so ninja about it? Surely, when using the term in such a manner, you are using it for the most known use of the word, I.E: stealthy/hidden/assasin type of thing. If everybody can see what you are doing, then you're not being very stealthy are you?

And ninja's wheren't the only ones that took part in open battles in medieval times. So that a ninja, being trained for combat, would naturally partake in the battle. Even farmers took up arms back in those days when the need was dire. That's where the word militia comes from. Doesn't make the farmer a warrior however.

So, "space trash man" it is!

-Most likely scenario-

Your buddies park in a random spot in the system and wait for you to do a mission. 45 minutes into the mission a ninja shows up. 10 minutes after picking through your wrecks and scoring all the Armor plates and alloy bars he finds a 500k loot item on a wreck and steals it. He starts flashing red, you tell your buddies, they warp to your location, then take the gate, and then possibly 2 more gates, and then get to your location.

The ninja sees X number of unknown ships suddenly appear in the mission, and thanks to his 5 seconds or less align time, leaves before you even get done loading the grid.

With your loot.
With your salvage.
With your buddies sitting there wondering why they waited an hour to try and save 10 million in loot, 5 million of which would have been vaporized if they actually caught the ninja and killed him.
