Hello everyone
Back in 2007 I opened the EVE cemetery which flourished until September 2008 when the JihadSwarm swept through Molea and destroyed the cemetery. My planetside duties at the time prevented me from rebuilding. Those duties have now been completed and I have been able to return to space. I reopened the cemetery in a public ceremony at 1900 GMT by anchoring 10 graves there.
The cemetery is located at Molea 2, moon 1. Each corpse gets respectfully placed in a secure can, if I receive multiple corpses of the same pilot I upgrade their grave to a mausoleum. Epitaphs can be arranged from the pilot themselves by contacting me ingame.
To enable the cemetery to grow I require you, the lovely citizens of Eve, to donate as many corpses as you can recover. Please contract them to Azia Burgi from any NPC station and I will collect them as soon as possible.
Cemetery Website: http://azia.geekandproud.co.uk/newdocs/cem.php Old Thread: http://www.eveonline.com/ingameboard.asp?a=topic&threadID=629889
Thanks for your time. I hope you will visit the cemetery and are able to reflect peacefully on the traumatic deaths of your fellow pod pilots. As always I welcome your comments, criticisms and suggestions.

Azia Burgi has done a fine thing this day. I attended the ceremony today and was moved by the obvious dedication to this task. I was very pleased to see that this station is not defenseless, and should remain secure as a monument to the trauma that we pilots go through - life after life. I have heard many ask, "Why?". I think the answer to that question is different for each of us. For me, I can say that this cemetery reminds me to be humble. It reminds me that if a clone vat ever malfunctioned I would be brother to the dreary contents of these grave containers. Moreover, this place provides a physical location for meditations designed to relieve the psychological impressions and blank spaces that haunt my mind after I take a clone bath. This is really a holy place. I have no doubt that God is looking through the great gate today and smiling on this place.
Sincerely,
Kenny Ray

Edited by: YangTze Quan on 27/09/2009 23:59:25 I am constantly amazed at the fascinating things that Eve Online players can accomplish in this game. Veteran player Azia Burgi's vision of an Eve Cemetary which celebrates the memory of fallen capsuleers, is realized once again today as she brings the new Eve Cemetary online. Congratulations for overcoming an earlier setback by the ever-present griefers which seem to frequent all game servers.
The grand re-opening was a nice event and I saw notables such as one of the EveDevs, Chribba and others in attendance. Azia's poignant opening speech was brief but sincere. Today, space is just a little less cold and a little more civilized than it was before, since there is now a chance to begin ones' last journey to the Final frontier with the respect that is your due.
Well Done Azia !

I plan to go with the sphere option as a layout. it lets me pack in as many graves as possible. The passwords have been upgraded, i can't go into details on that for obvious reasons.

Technically the Amarrian religion is descendant of the Catholic Church so I see why not...
I mentioned in other threat that the word holy war and crusader are used in the Ammarian ships and missions so Jihad and Muhjadeen are the arabic equivalents.
Keep in mind that Jihad is a 1400 year old concept which has historical precedence over anything the terrorists tried to co-opt as their own.

Sticking any part of your body out of a window of a spacecraft is not conducive to your health. The result being you might find yourself in the cemetery.

Do we have to bring the corpses to your cemetery or can we just contract them from where-ever we are? (Provided its empire space I guess) ----------------------------------------------- But then again I cant really approve of any of this because this is my signature |

Just a quick update to say I now have about 869 graves at the cemetery now. This means it is now substantially larger than the cemetery destroyed by GoonSwarm.
I now have the corpse of the CSM delegate Mynxee (http://aziaburgi.me.uk/newdocs/cem/cem_burialdetail.php?id=1551) Olga Potempote currently has the most corpses in the cemetery with a staggering 10 (http://aziaburgi.me.uk/newdocs/cem/cem_burialdetail.php?id=1482)
I also would like to thank everyone who has contributed towards fuel recently, especially Simius Funk of [NCTA]. Thanks to everyone who has supported me so far and I hope to have your continuing support in the future.
Please keep your corpse donations coming!

There isn't a grave set up to honour the dead who are never recovered currently. I guess you could take the cemetery tower as a monument to all the unrecovered. If you want to contract up the remains I will ensure they get a proper burial.
Quote: Azia what are your views on this guy with his quest of a million corpses?
Not respecting the dead or acknowledging the struggles the deceased have taken part in is disappointing. I can only hope that he finds it within his heart to donate the corpses to the cemetery so that they may be buried properly.

I believe CCP looks down on this idea due to anchoring a large amount of secure containers in a system causes lag. I know somebody tried to do that and they just went ahead and wiped all the cans from the system.
Might I suggest mass graves?

actually as long as azia can get to them once during the time period it should reset, doesnt seem that hard to me, especially with the amount of people who would help do it just to **** off the goons.
CCP have apparently also confirmed they will not be erasing the graveyard because they think its an interesting thing to have.

I will devour all of the corpses one by one in my massive maw before you can put another station up. They are like tiny little flash-frozen shrimp to me, and when warmed, the purification will begin. The contaminants left by by your amateur interment process will cause the corpses to quickly decay, tenderizing the flesh, and making it far more delectable to consume.

Indeed. and it won't be a banable offense since people were just trying to protect the cemetery.

The corpse cans themselves should be enough to take it down.

Not at all.
Can can be petitioned when it can be perceived that they have been placed in order to gain an unfair advantage by causing lag. I've seen a hundred cans dropped by AAA Citizens on HED-GP to prevent cloaky games and that was considered fine... as they weren't aimed at causing lag.
Since the cemetery isn't there to cause lag why should CCP act?

Am I understanding this correctly that if Goons do kill the tower, they can't kill the cans because they are NPC corp anchored? and that they do not expire as long as they are anchored near ANY tower?

The combined fleets of the Goons and Test Alliance were too much for our defences and the tower is now in reinforced mode. We estimate that we were outnumbered 20:1 with the enemy fleet totalling roughly 60 pilots.

Goonswarm Federation war on Eve Cemetery 2010.
What a sad commentary on the current state of Goonswarm, reduced to initiating "Somebody notice me" wardec's on tiny highsec corps in hopes of getting in the news, for anything. There's no strategic value, no financial gain, no great battles, no flood of killmails, they cant access the cans and they probably cant even put their own POS up there. In other words, a completely useless wardec with no other goal than the desire to become griefers or a noobcorp. An utter waste of time and resources on their part.
*** Congratulations to Azia Burgi and the Eve Cemetery members for standing up them. ***
------------------------------------------------ The Eve Cemetery POS will be out of reinforced later today and I think any nullsec Corporation currently at war with Goonswarm would gain honor by coming to Molea and swatting these annoying griefer-bees.

Also: We are now incredibly rich with us having dekelein handed to us by tcf, a region which is worth far more than delve ever was. An irony not lost on us for sure. So when it comes to time and resources, we really do not have better things to do as a) we're busy doing dekelein ****, b) we're rich.

If this only held the corpse of players who do not play eve anymore, then it would be pretty cool. But even if you role play, they are not really the person as they were reactivated in a new body blah blah blah.
So create a place where the corpse of the truly deceased can rest and be remembered.

I, for one, would like to wholeheartedly thank Asia Birdi for generating content for other EVE players. The PVE content that ships with the game can get pretty boring, so player provided content really can spice things up. Don't let the naysayers in this thread get you down, Ezra Burger, for you are a pioneer. I fully enjoyed shotting your pos, and look forward to doing it again in a year or two. Fun Fact: No one really cares about Goons. On the flipside, Goons can only play EVE on easy mode when it comes to getting attention. Whats more interesting? Reading about Goons disbanding another major alliance from the inside (outside their own ) and conquering another region. Or shooting a highsec POS with hundreds of cans anchored around it. To Goons, it doesn't matter so long as someone is looking at them .
And I keep falling for the trolls, damn it

What a wonderful development for Eve online. I am sure the gaming mags will be all over this. It sort of reminds me of my old corp (Capsoul corp). We would fight in nothing but our pods and we always lost! Until one day we met another corp (Pawd corp) that also only fought in their pods. We met up one day to do battle in a hotly contested solar system in Kor-Azor and bored each other to death Kash

Tbh, I find it kinda sad that Goons no longer matter. No really. Back in 2007 when I started out, Goons were p cool. You either loved 'em or hated 'em but either way, you couldn't get around the fact that they took the sandbox concept to the max (yay Velator Blob of Dewm!). What they did was original and best of all, where all the other big alliances took Internet Spaceshipz to be Serious Bizness, they did all of it Just For Fun.
At some point though, despite all the "we don't care; we're the worst pilots in all of EvE!" bruhaha, they began to, well, care. And that is the big difference between the cemetary attacks in 2008 and 2010. Khartoon attacked the cemetary for no other reason than that he could. Wotsisname attack was a lame-a$$ attempt at copying Goon-glory of Days Gone By in the hopes of somehow bringing Goons back to the forefront of peoples' minds again.
I for one miss my 2007/08 Velator-blobbing Goon overlords! :-(
As far as the cemetary is concerned, I have it on p good authority that there is a backlog of about 6,000 corpses to be "buried." So there will be a new cemetary somewhere somehow. Azia Burgi's character is 5 or 6 years old so she must be filthy rich ISK-wise and putting up a new tower can't be all that difficult for her.
In other words, EvE Cemetary will be in the news again. Goons - not so much.

Goons stopped being goons when they took Delve. Now they are just this corp who still clings to the days of old. My best guess is they are trying to motivate their members again, but like re runs of old movies its mostly just nostalgia and passes quickly.

Following the war with GoonSwarm we lost the POS tower. As you know the tower was only required to prevent CONCORD considering the graves as debris and removing them from space. With the loss of the tower myself and some trusted friends of the EVE Cemetery set about recovering and preserving the graves. Unfortunately we weren't able to get round all the graves before a CONCORD salvage team forced us to dock, as a result we lost several graves.
Out of the 873 graves anchored in Molea, 802 were successfully recovered. This means 71 graves were deleted by the system during downtime. What follows are the names of the missing. I wish to extend my heartfelt sorrow to the pilots on this list, I'm truly sorry I was not able to protect your remains as I promised to do so. GoonSwarm were not able to destroy any of the graves nor were they able to break the encryption surrounding the graves.
Thank you for your support thorough-out this difficult time. The cemetery is still accepting corpse donations and we hope to resume operations as soon as possible.

The EVE Cemetery. Even the name inspires dignity, honour and respect. The first time that I had heard the title I couldn't help feeling that it was going to be something special and memorable in an environment where the overwhelming emphasis was on destruction, rather than creation.
Even many traditionally cynical and trigger-happy pilots have acknowledged and come to respect the idealogy behind the concept: a neutral monument to the brave men and women of New Eden, a solemn place where the fallen could be remembered without judgement or bias. A shrine of contemplation and introspective, or perhaps simply an arena to gloat over an old enemy you may have helped put there.
There was no financial or strategic benefit in destroying the Cemetery, and certainly no honour or respect to be gained from it. Quite the contrary in fact: the honour goes to the valiant defenders who, outnumbered and with no hope of victory against such overwhelming odds, continued to fight in defence of their charges without question or hesitation. Who, regrettably, are still fighting as I scribe these words.
I extend my heartfelt condolences for the destruction of the tower monument, but also deep admiration for the efforts of Azia Burgi and the EVE Cemetery members, as well as the brave individuals who attempted to aid them in their hour of need. While the loss of 71 graves is indeed a terrible tragedy, it bears noting that those losses could have been far higher if not for the vigilance of the exhausted Cemetery keepers and concerned volunteers.
Unfortunately, the investment of time, imagination and effort required to destroy something is so much less than is required to create and nurture it. I only pray that some day, courageous alliances who truly care about this universe we share will take the Cemetery under their protection and be a part of this famous and historically unique entity.

It is great to hear that no real harm was done to the cemetery.
The way I see it, instead of taking the easy approach by offering as little attack surface as possible, avoiding confrontation at all costs, the Eve Cemetery Corp. displayed no small amount of courage in actually facing up to the threat.
While being highly outnumbered from the start, they and a small group of friends did their best to protect the cemetery and minimise losses. After the battle was over with the protecting tower gone, you did everything in your power to prevent the graves from taking any damage. Downtime interfering with the effort to save all graves was merely an unfortunate coincidence.
As it has been said before, the way you and the Eve Cemetery team handled the given situation commands the utmost respect.
I`m confident that the cemetery will be still around when its current enemies have been reduced to a mere footnote in the history of Eve.

Decided this was more fitting for the Goons. I put out one day to go sight seeing and I was seriously disappointed that my last stop was forced to be closed down. I hope with all my heart that the cemetary will be rebuilt, and this time remain undestroyed for enough time for all of the people to be properly buried. May prosperity and safety befall EVE Cemetery when it reopens.
To all of the people in Goonswarm, find something else to do, it's not as unprecedented as the first time. Go and take down a Titan with only Noobships and record it, that would be fun to watch.

Further to my report regarding the missing graves I have located 2 of the missing graves and I have secured them in my hanger ready for reburial when the time comes. The names of the two recovered graves are as follows:
Alfacinha Alustrious Killer
My apologies to those pilots for any distress I may have cause for miss-reporting their loss. I have amended the burial database and honour roll list to reflect the changes. The number of successfully recovered graves now stands at 804.

It would seem to me that goons have a history, dating back many years, of attempting to punish players or groups that exploit the game. This can be seen quite clearly in macrocosm; the Great War against Band of Brothers; and in microcosm: RoyofCA's work uncovering the booster/moon materials duping.
With this in mind, I'd wager a guess that the first attack against the Cemetary was likely just the goons lashing out at a notable player project, just random aggression. But in response, Azia found a loophole in the game mechanics to allow her to keep the cemetary almost completely safe; For those of you who haven't dallied with anchorable structures, here's the quick rundown: once upon a time, anything left in space stayed in space forever: empty shuttles, containers(anchored or not), etc. This meant there were many thousands of objects slowing down the game for everyone. In Trinity 1.1, as part of Need for Speed, they introduced the cleanup code where objects unused for 30 days now get deleted. The one major exception is containers in the proximity of a starbase.
The catch is that the starbase doesn't care who owns the stuff floating around it, it protects it from deletion regardless. Normally this wouldn't be an issue because nobody wants random strangers dumping stuff next to their station right? This is where Azia's exploit sits: NPC corps are immune to wardecs(for good reason!) and because of that their members aren't allowed to anchor starbases - they are however allowed to anchor containers. So what Azia has done is anchor a tower with her actual corporation, EVE Cemetary, but anchor all the containers around it as an NPC corp. This means that while the tower is vulnerable to attack, the containers themselves aren't - even though they are reaping the benefit of the tower protecting them from automated deletion.
What's my point? My point is that the solution to the problem seems obvious at this point, and while we can wait for CCP to either change the NPC Corp anchoring rules, or the starbase/container deletion rules to only match corp/alliance - we can also try to help Azia understand that the logical reason the goons keep coming back to haunt her is that she is fundamentally cheating. It may sound harsh but I stand by the term: EVE is a game of risk/reward - putting up a starbase brings the risk of attack and loss, but also the reward of relative safety - both for you and your containers; Azia has clearly broken this risk/reward mechanic - she reaps her reward of being allowed to roleplay freely, but suffers no risk towards the loss of her valued assets. |

wrong... goons do **** to do ****. They raise havoc and chaos.
its not an exploit... CCP is completely aware of how she does, and have been for awhile. What she does in no way gives her an advantage in game play... nor really lags the server (at least compared to your avg null sec drake lag death swarm of missile spammers that doesn't stack missiles cause that would decrease server load and the whole reason they are good is cause of the lag they cause)
but i mean really... the system is out of the way... people generally like what she does, she doesnt make money on it, and any donations go straight into fueling it. so honestly there is no reason anyone should have an objection to this small oddity in the game. But goons being goons... will be .... goons (love that they named themselves with a name that already had bad connotations)

This is your mistake. The Goons aren't doing something out of some sense of the greater good and you're either trolling, or you're an idiot for thinking so. They are doing whatever they find amusing at any given time, and if they can annoy/upset/anger "pubbies" then they will. They destroyed the graveyard to be annoying, nothing more.
Nice try, though. .

Originally by: Deadspace Acquisitions What's my point?
This.
Also it's a cemetery and she takes it seriously.
Edit: Just to be clear I think you SHOULD be able to wardec NPC corps.

Since CCP created the feature to anchor containers around POS's you cannot accuse Azia for using this as an exploit or cheat. And as a member of the Science and Trade Institute she pays her taxes to anchor stuff in space.

Originally by: Deadspace Acquisitions It would seem to me that goons have a history,...
...that she is fundamentally cheating...
...has clearly broken this risk/reward mechanic...
Firstly, 'goons' have a reputation for attempting to ruin other peoples' enjoyment of any game they choose to invade as has been stated by their members on multiple occasions, and who are themselves infamous for cheating and hacking in other games. There is no 'noble calling' at all, they are simply griefers and exploiters themselves and quite proud of that fact.
Secondly, there is no 'cheating' involved with regard to the cemetery. To be clear: a 'cheat' or 'exploit' is something that benefits the player in some tangible way that contravenes the intentions of the designed mechanics. While the protections afforded to the graves by CONCORD mean that they are themselves protected from War Dec, the tower isn't and once that falls a herculean effort is required to deal with the fallout of the (literally) hundreds of graves before the system countdown is completed. In truth, it would actually be less time- and energy-consuming if the graves had been destroyed.
Incidentally, you seem to misunderstand the concept of 'risk vs. reward'. The concept relates to the acquisition of wealth and rare and valuable items, not to social activities such as RP'ing. The cemetery itself isn't just a non-profit venture, it is actually working at a sustained loss since the investment in ISK, time and effort in setting up, maintaining, defending, then saving and re-anchoring the graves after certain people decide they want to get in the news again is not something I can overemphasise. There is a great deal of behind-the-scenes work people don't consider when they see the cemetery as a mere 'RP' eccentricity.
The cemetery itself generates no financial profit besides any donations that supporters might voluntarily bestow. It serves no tactical or strategic purpose. It causes no hindrance or impedence to anyone, nor does it (as has been fraudulently claimed) cause lag in the system. The venture is simply intended to add something different to the world of EVE, something to talk about and stir the imagination. Anyone that cannot see this and would seek to take that away due to some personal bias or misguided claim of 'exploit!' is being extremely short-sighted and polarised.
EVE isn't solely a sterile PvP-centric game any more, it is also increasingly a rich and vibrant sci-fi canvas for people to enter and create their own stories and legacies. While you may be one of those who see the game in terms of black and white, 'PvP or carebear', there are an increasing number of us that want more from EVE. I include CCP in this since they have stated they wish EVE to be a multispectral sci-fi simulator with enough facets for a wide variety of play styles. Part of this vision are the 'RP' and social aspects, so often villified by the 'hardcore PvP' crowd, but no less valid or important to the universe we share. Incarna is set to expand upon this.
In closing, I applaud the efforts of Azia Burgi and the EVE Cemetery corporation in their efforts to add a little colour to this dark and oft-times dismal universe. Their steadfast persistence and determination in the face of such hostility and closed-mindedness is an inspiration to all of us that may dare to dream of something 'more' than what is presented to us every day. I look forward to visiting the new and improved cemetery, and perhaps even resting there one of these days. :)

I disagree.
It's our choice to act as headstone defiling hooligans and kick over Azia's tower every time she puts one up. But if you want to focus on the risk-reward aspect alone...
An npc corp character cannot anchor a tower. But in this case an npc corp character is taking advantage of the presence of an anchored tower that isn't in the npc corp, to make their cans do something that they could not do otherwise.
Where I'm standing that looks like an exploit. CCP didn't give NPC corp players to anchor structures, so why should their cans be able to enjoy the persistence granted by a player corp tower and the nigh invulnerability of an npc-owned can?
The *fix* would be for CCP to simply make anchored tower benefits not work for objects not owned by the same corp/alliance.

You totally mis-interpreted my comment. The "I know...you're who ?" was not directed at Azia in the least. It was intended for the trolls that I expected to follow my posting with that particular comment.
