We're getting into POSes, and i was just wondering - is a password necessary? Some say it isn't ... My thought is that if people can tank the guns, then the whole POS is open for anyone ... :(

Without a password, the bubble will not appear, making it kinda hard to anchor/online modules. ---

I think people are confusing 2 issues when they tell you this.
You DO need to put a password on the POS to secure it.
You DON'T need to use the password to access the POS if you're in the POS owning corp. You DO still need to set it on the POS though. All corp members will be able to access the POS without entering the password.
Alliance and non-corp members would need to use the password to access the POS. ______________________ Isn't it time you learned to fight back? Agony Unleashed Home of the PvP University.

Edited by: Chiana Moro on 29/09/2009 09:31:31 I wonder if I'm even more confused than you think =)
You write "Access the POS" = I'm thinking access (for example) the corp hangar? Then I'm with you that corp member don't need the password and enemies can't access it.
I write "Access the POS" = getting inside the shield. if enemies can tank the POS guns (somehow) can they then get inside the POS shield if there is no password on the POS (the one you set per ship for starbase)? it wouldn't really be a protection of ships inside a shield then, even if the structures take ages to take down.

Ok, a couple of things.
1 Note - when I say owning corp I mean the corp that anchored the POS.
1. From inside the POS shield, you can't target anything (at least in my experience) so you can't shoot the POS itself without being outside the bubble. 2. Even if an enemy can tank the guns, he can't go through the shield unless someone who knows the password gave it to him. Of course if he does that, he can't shoot the POS, since he can't target it anymore. 3. If you don't put a password on your POS, the shield doesn't come up - it's part of the onlining and anchoring process for the tower. 4. Anyone from the owning corp can enter the POS. They don't need the password. They can access Corporate hangars inside the POS exactly like any other office hangar - it uses the same permissions as the Hangar (Other) and Container (Other) setting in the corporate control panel. 5. People from outside the owning corp can get inside the shield if they have the POS password, but they still can't access the corporate hangars there because they are not members of the owning corp.
Hope that helps some. --Vel

Edited by: Chiana Moro on 29/09/2009 14:36:08 ok, I think i get it now :) so if i online the POS then later blank the password, will this count as the password "" which is default in ships(=free passage for all) or simply that enemies will not be able to enter because they don't have a correct password (which is pretty impossible to enter).
From your answers above and what I've read elsewhere, am I correct to think that passwords are only really useful as a way of letting your friends in (which can be abused ofc) - otherwise you don't need it?
Thanks for all your help btw :)

Just note that I have heard that if someone gets your password and then smartbomb your internal POS modules or try to bump your ships out if they are not piloted or if you are in a war, now the smartbomb thing could have been changed to prevent this, but if it is possible having a good password is always a good idea ____________________________________________ When going to a party with wine, women, and song.
