"...So the whole idea that CCP has with EVE is that we're trying to make the ultimate science fiction simulator. We're trying to create this world, this rich, deep world that goes in and expands out and recreates every one of those cool sci-fi moments you've had in movies and books, and everything when you think of science fiction. We want EVE to be like that, and bombing planets is definitely one of them, the seedy bar, and the canteena, all of that stuff." Noah of CCP
I keep hearing this from CCP, and I would like to respond with my favorite Sci-fi moments and ask you, the EVE players, for yours.
One of my favorite Sci-fi moments is a classic, Obi-wan Kenobi, Luke Skywalker, Han Solo, sitting in the falcon while luke is going up against the Remote and learning about the force from Obi-wan. It seemed like a home from the chaos, if only for a moment they were all part of this wierd hero family and no matter how much the empire shot at them they were always able to juke out of the way or rely on Han and Chewbacca to get them out of trouble. This also takes place when they're sitting in the asteroid in the Empire Strikes Back where Han first kisses Leia. I want my own Millennium Falcon, not for really fighting as much as I just want a place to chill with my friends while we wait to make our next move to get out of the **** we got ourselves in.
Wing Commander. Two instances from both the game and the movie I enjoy, it has been a while since I've seen or played it, but I'll try to recap the experience properly. The scouts are waiting attached to an asteroid for the enemy fleet. You're out there, with only your friend, your ship, and in the middle of a whole ****load of danger. I want to be one of those two pilots in that system with my best friend, attached to an asteroid trying to avoid enemy patrols waiting for them to pass before I can get a signal out to warn the fleet.
The Tigerclaw. You and your fellow pilots are in the middle of a fight you're probably going to lose but you are the tip of the sword. You're on call 24/7 and have to go whenever the klaxons start to blare. Some of the pilots don't make it back, mostly just rookies though. You're among the greats, Iceman, your hero, and others. They're all crack shots and you're privileaged to be part of that community although you're probably in a hopeless struggle against an enemy that has far superior numbers. I want to be a fighter pilot on a carrier.
So what are your favorite sci-fi moments?

There are four main quotes that stuck with me:
"The mind is a strange and wonderful thing. I'm not sure it'll ever be able to figure itself out. Everything else maybe, from the atom to the universe, everything except itself." - Invasion of the Body Snatchers.
"The universe is composed of infinite planes of the random." - Random Quest.
"Any sort of ship you have to learn to pilot; it takes a long time, a new set of reflexes, a different and artificial way of thinking. Even riding a bicycle demands an acquired skill, very different from walking, whearas a spaceship - oh, brother! I won't live that long. Spaceships are for acrobats who are also mathematicians" - Starship Troopers.
"The issue isn't whether you're paranoid, It's whether you're paranoid enough." - Strange Days.

My top Fav SCI FI moments in film:-
1) The "boarding action" in New Hope
2) The Marines entering the atmosphere processor scene in Aliens
3) The fort scene in starship troopers
4) The first five minutes of FF: spirits within, its a shame the rest of the movie sucked, but the first 5 minutes of the dead world and guys in armour shooting at weird ghosts, that was pretty cool.
5) The lobby scene in the matrix
There are lots of classic sci fi moments in the star wars saga, so classic, that we now take them for granted. A world without the iconic AT-AT scene or the death star run is unimageable.

The Kobayshi Maru, and Khan quoting Moby ****

Pretty much all of The Fifth Element, but especially the reconstruction scene.
Oh, and Dan Simmons' "Ilium", wherein robots from Jupiter fly a skyscraper-sized starship powered by nuclear bombs to a quantum-shifted copy of Earth where post-human immortals are posing as the ancient Greek gods and re-enacting the battle of Troy. - Verin "Stitcher" Hakatain. |
