"...So the whole idea that CCP has with EVE is that we're trying to make the ultimate science fiction simulator. We're trying to create this world, this rich, deep world that goes in and expands out and recreates every one of those cool sci-fi moments you've had in movies and books, and everything when you think of science fiction. We want EVE to be like that, and bombing planets is definitely one of them, the seedy bar, and the canteena, all of that stuff." Noah of CCP
I keep hearing this from CCP, and I would like to respond with my favorite Sci-fi moments and ask you, the EVE players, for yours.
One of my favorite Sci-fi moments is a classic, Obi-wan Kenobi, Luke Skywalker, Han Solo, sitting in the falcon while luke is going up against the Remote and learning about the force from Obi-wan. It seemed like a home from the chaos, if only for a moment they were all part of this wierd hero family and no matter how much the empire shot at them they were always able to juke out of the way or rely on Han and Chewbacca to get them out of trouble. This also takes place when they're sitting in the asteroid in the Empire Strikes Back where Han first kisses Leia. I want my own Millennium Falcon, not for really fighting as much as I just want a place to chill with my friends while we wait to make our next move to get out of the **** we got ourselves in.
Wing Commander. Two instances from both the game and the movie I enjoy, it has been a while since I've seen or played it, but I'll try to recap the experience properly. The scouts are waiting attached to an asteroid for the enemy fleet. You're out there, with only your friend, your ship, and in the middle of a whole ****load of danger. I want to be one of those two pilots in that system with my best friend, attached to an asteroid trying to avoid enemy patrols waiting for them to pass before I can get a signal out to warn the fleet.
The Tigerclaw. You and your fellow pilots are in the middle of a fight you're probably going to lose but you are the tip of the sword. You're on call 24/7 and have to go whenever the klaxons start to blare. Some of the pilots don't make it back, mostly just rookies though. You're among the greats, Iceman, your hero, and others. They're all crack shots and you're privileaged to be part of that community although you're probably in a hopeless struggle against an enemy that has far superior numbers. I want to be a fighter pilot on a carrier.
So what are your favorite sci-fi moments?

There are four main quotes that stuck with me:
"The mind is a strange and wonderful thing. I'm not sure it'll ever be able to figure itself out. Everything else maybe, from the atom to the universe, everything except itself." - Invasion of the Body Snatchers.
"The universe is composed of infinite planes of the random." - Random Quest.
"Any sort of ship you have to learn to pilot; it takes a long time, a new set of reflexes, a different and artificial way of thinking. Even riding a bicycle demands an acquired skill, very different from walking, whearas a spaceship - oh, brother! I won't live that long. Spaceships are for acrobats who are also mathematicians" - Starship Troopers.
"The issue isn't whether you're paranoid, It's whether you're paranoid enough." - Strange Days.

My top Fav SCI FI moments in film:-
1) The "boarding action" in New Hope
2) The Marines entering the atmosphere processor scene in Aliens
3) The fort scene in starship troopers
4) The first five minutes of FF: spirits within, its a shame the rest of the movie sucked, but the first 5 minutes of the dead world and guys in armour shooting at weird ghosts, that was pretty cool.
5) The lobby scene in the matrix
There are lots of classic sci fi moments in the star wars saga, so classic, that we now take them for granted. A world without the iconic AT-AT scene or the death star run is unimageable.

Easy question...
#1, by far, is the opening of any never-seen-before Star Wars film. Horns, trumpet and so on heavilly pop in. "A long time ago"... I'll never forget these moments of pure joy.
The whole Blade Runner film is great. And I loved Dune. I'm planing to read the books after I read every Discworld I could grab in french (I'm in "Carpe Jugulum" and it's the last affordable one in french, others are at 15Ē).
I loved end of BSG season 1.
Anyway, one of my best moment in a scifi theme... is in Eve. It was in end of 2007 I think, within Tau Ceti federation, when GoonSwarm and TCF tried to one-shoot Veritas Immortalis's capital. Lokta Volterra came in with numbers.
With a titan.
And they hit us in the face very hard. We didn't knew they had a titan.
I immediatly was motivating people on our TS because we were really soooooooo choked. And our people got over it. And TCF came back with a whole new fleet.
And TCF one-shot VI. Then GS guys came and put france national anthem on our TS, the "Marseillaise" just for fun...
This campaign was sooooooo epic and great !! :)
EVE allready rocks guys !!! :) Fetchez la vache ! moar(tm) < soon(tm) :(

I was at this party once and got really toasted. Had this chick drop me off at home got into my robe turned off the lights and was hanging out watching tv, smoking a cigarette. All of a sudden outside these flshing colored lights were coming in from all of the windows. In the smoke it was downright earie.
Of course being totally ****faced at the time I could have sworn the mother ship landed it was right out of close encounters of the third kind. I went to the door opened it up threw my hands in the air and shouted tot he lights take me to your planet.
The next thing i heard was my brother yelling to the police officer next to him to "lower your guns its my brother"
See while I was out he drove his girlfriend home but left all the lights on. when he came back all the lights were off except he could see a faint light flickering (the tv). He did not see my car in the dirveway so thought the house was being robbed and called the cops.
I was too drunk to realize that the red and blue and white flashing lights were the police surrounding the house.

Edited by: Paddlefoot Aeon on 08/10/2009 21:04:34 The Galactica hot drop is awesome, but I have to say that my favorite moment has to come from Babylon 5.
Its in season two, and the Centauri have just launched their end game offensive against the Narn. The Shadows have just ganked the Narn Fleet, and the Centauri fleet is approaching an undefended Narn homeworld.
Centauri warships are seen in orbit of Narn, using Mass Drivers to bombard the planet with Asteroids harvested from within the system.
And in that moment you see Londo at the window of the command cruiser, this look of abject horror on his face as the assault is reflected in the glass....
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bjIlqrAfbbg
...and he looks away in shame at the end, knowing that he's just been instrumental in committing what amounts to genocide.
Babylon 5 was a great show.

The movie "Dune" in its entirety. The dark universe Frank Herbert created reminds me of Eve, and David Lynch (the director) revels in the Gothic detail of the sets.
The characters are human, but not the kind of humans that are from Earth.
The movie didn't do the books justice (which movie ever does?) but it did capture the feel the books conveyed.

Galactica hot-drop is a great choice. That is one awesome episode in general.
My others:
- Luke's battle with Vader on Bespin and "that" revelation. Still chills me a bit. JEJ did some awesome VO work for Vader. Also the moment when the Super Star Destroyer is revealed - freakin' awesome. - Most of Starship Troopers, but notably their first drop. The music, the tension . . . great stuff. - Roy Batty's death scene in Blade Runner. Not ashamed to admit that I cried when I first saw it. - Minority Report - every time they used that awesome screen. I still want one - Ending of BSG. It's a marmite moment in that you will either love it or hate it, but I loved the final episode, and I still cry during that final scene between Laura and Bill in the Raptor. - Crysis - the alien ship level. It looks stupidly good and offers quite a few tense moments. If the last section had all been 0G and in the ship, it would've been much better. Pretending to be the Predator and using the stealth ability a lot is also win. - AvP2 - does it need saying why? Roll on AvP3! - The Matrix - everything from the opening title [even the sound made when the WB logo comes up on screen is awesome] to the end.
Probably a few I've forgotten as well, but those are the reason why I still love sci-fi. -----

- The Farscape crew chopping off one of pilot's arms. Nothing like a series where who's good and who's bad largely depend on how long it's been since the last meal.
- Alpha-striking an enemy Mech with 4 ER PPC's.
- The second episode in Babylon 5 where they go to Babylon 4 to send it back in time (serious "oooh, now it makes sense" moment).

Starting in Anime: The first shot in Robotech. When the SDF-1 Fires its main guns. (HOT DAMN)
Gundam Wing Finale: WingZero VS Asteroid. Badass.
John Doe: First Episode where everyone is asking him all sorts of questions and he is answering everything. The cobra moment was sweet too.
SG-1 (outtake) The antartica episode where Carter and O'Neil are stuck under the ice. There is a rarely seen outtake where Carter goes off on O'Neil being MacGuyver. (This is one i wont spoil you need to see this for yourself)\
Babylon Five: Three stick out to me. Draal taking control of Epsilon, the whitestar jump into mars, and The big one is during the season four last episode. One of the most epic fights ever.
Halo 3's finale. (the true one)
There is just so much that sticks out its hard to put it all out there.
(i havent highlighted BSG because it was done already)

Some other ones I don't think anyone has mentioned:
1) The first time a "tuning" occurs in Dark City.
2) 'Behold me, family,' Leto said. 'Iam Ari, the Lion of the Atreides. And here - ' Again he shook Ghanima's arm with that powerful ease which set her whole body jerking. ' - here is Aryeh, the Atreides Lioness. We come to set you onto Secher Nbiw, the Golden Path.' - Children of Dune, Frank Herbert where the ensuing climax, which I will not spoil, is awesome! =)
3) Any episode of Red Dwarf (yup I even like the later series).
4) Any part of the Hitchiker's Guide trilogy by Douglas Adams involving Marvin the Paranoid Android.

But, in no particular order: The BSG Hot drop on new caprica, and the ressurection ship ep/fight. Stargate SG1 battle over antarctica http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nwUQT0f9nhE SG:A Fight over replicator homeworld http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NthWqgMnoHQ Other stargate moments: The Hive, The Seige pt1,2 and 3. The moment a Hatak rams an Ori warship and the Ori ship just shrugs it off and keeps on going. And less Sci-fi but The Shrine from S5 of SG:A is a great ep too.
And possibly my favourite moment in Sci-fi (that I can remember) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LQF_DNdtpb8 Season... 9 finale of SG1 if I remember correctly. Also, sorry about the vid. It's late and I cant find one without silly music.

I always loved when Deathstar blows up Alderan... :)
Or when Quinn Dexter bombs a planet in Nights Dawn with asteroids.
I really loved ship of the line fight in B5.
I also liked when HAL9000 kills its crew.
I definatly love the first time in Alien when they see that alien ship for the very first time. You got this awesome erie setting.
I liked quantum destabilizer that turned matter into energy in Pandors Star series of book. Well, when the humans used it the first time to the aliens utter shock and supprise was what was really exicting to read.
I liked the map in Star Craft where you get swarmed by Zerg, and you gotta hold out until rescue came along (Map 3 of Terran campaing was it?).
I liked the excessive use of antimatter weapons by Al Capone in Nights Dawn. When they attacked a planet the sky would shine brighter then any star. :D
And many many more (not all of them violent tho) :) --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I love the scene in Aliens (special edition) where they have placed two pairs of sentry guns as defense in the corridor leading to the command centre. The aliens attack and from inside they can only hear the first two guns and see on monitors how they use up more and more ammo.
Linky (sorry about the bad quality, also doesn't show the 5 rounds that was left in the last of the guns )

Edited by: Stuart Price on 09/10/2009 23:36:12 +1's to so many, but trying to mention original ones and trying to stick to spaceships if I can (since I could talk about films and/or sci-fi ALL YEAR):
- Latest Star Trek, during the opening scene, where Kirk's mother has just taken off on the shuttlecraft and it has that pan shot across the front of the Kelvin. Weapons fire going off everywhere, turrets tracking vainly against incoming ordinance, explosions tearing at the hull, fires blooming and all in total silence, just that incredibly evocative piece of music backing it up. It only lasts a few seconds but WHAT an image. A strong contender for BEST OPENING TO A FILM EVER (Along with the opening to The Fountain, for me at least).
- Ragnar Anchorage. Galactica gets angry for the first time in the show, one hell of a fireworks show.
- All of Freespace 2. ALL OF IT. Thank god for the Freespace 2 Source Code Project.
- The ending of Unreal 2 (it happens in space! It counts!). Downer ending or what?
- THAT revelation in Knights of the Old Republic. Also, in the sequel, when Atton asks you what happened to your lightsaber, one of the repsonses is, "A Jedi is not defined by his weapon", which to me says something very important about the nature of the Jedi order.
- *EDIT* ALL OF FALLOUT. EVERYTHING FALLOUT EVER (Except BoS on the consoles, but just like Galactica 80, that never happened).

From Space: Above and Beyond, the exchange between LTC. McQueen and the ship's chaplain before hunting "Chiggy Von Richtofen".
Chaplain: Colonel. Colonel! Colonel McQueen! Perhaps you should make peace with your maker.
LTC. McQueen: My maker was some geek in a lab coat with an eyedropper and a petri dish. What do I need to make peace with him for?
Priest: In times of war we must all make peace with our maker.
LTC. McQueen: Well, frankly chaplain I don't think our maker wants to hear from me right now. Because he knows I'm going to go out in his sky in this plane and remove one of His creations from His universe. And when I return, I'm going to drink a bottle of scotch as if it was Chiggy Von Richthofen's blood and celebrate his death.
Priest: Amen.

I was very much impressed by the dialogue between Teal'c and Tomin in Stargate: Ark of Truth when they are in the mess hall of Odyssey.
"Teal'c: Nothing I have done since turning against the goa'uld will make up for the atrocities I once committed in their name. Somewhere deep inside you you knew it was wrong, a voice you did not recognize screamed for you to stop. You saw no way out, it was the way things were, they could not be changed. You're trying to convince yourself the people you're hurting deserved it. You became numb to their pain and suffering, you learned to shut out the voice speaking against it.
Tomin: There's always a choice.
Teal'c: Indeed there is.
Tomin: I chose to ignore it.
Teal'c: Yet you sit here now.
Tomin: I sit here, and I cannot imagine the day when I will forgive myself.
Teal'c: Because it will never come. One day others may try to convince you they have forgiven you, that is more about them than you. For them, imparting forgiveness is a blessing.
Tomin: How do you go on?
Teal'c: It is simple. You will never forgive yourself. Accept it. You hurt others, many others, that cannot be undone. You will never find personal retribution, but your life does not have to end. That which is right, just and true can still prevail. If you do not fight for what you believe in all may be lost for everyone else. But do not fight for yourself, fight for others, others that may be saved through your effort. That is the least you can do"
Not really a Sci-Fi quote but definately an amazing performance.

Blah, blah, blah!
First off, the end of Cowboy Bebop. Need I say more than "Bang...". Best ending ever.
Another one which hasn't been mentioned here is the final episode of Star Trek: Voyager, more specifically when the Voyager goes all Alien larvae birth on the Borg cube.

"Ten minutes later, drifting idly through a cloud, he got a large and extremely disreputable ****tail party in the small of the back." - Gotta love Douglas Adams' ability to set up such ridiculous mental reversals. Plus, the whole '****tail party' description is simply win.
She arose, then: "Lord, could you be wrong about your Golden Path? Does the possibility of failure..."
"Anything and anyone can fail," he said, "but brave good friends help." - God Emperor of Dune. Herbert was a sick genius, really some of the densest storylines, plots, and dialog that would force you to read several times over. Shame about the newer books though; not even close.
Khan: Surely, I have made my meaning plain. I mean to avenge myself upon you, Admiral. I deprived your ship of power, and when I swing around, I mean to deprive you of your life. - Ricardo Montalban as an evil genetic genius with pecs...Vader can suck it! heh

A lot of the things that come in my mind at first are also mentioned here like Delenn’s quote form B5 about “if you value your lives be somewhere else” or the galactica hotdrop or the very nice stuff from Firefly.
But for now back to B5 since I’m a huge fan of all those G’Kar / Molari conversations like this one here.
Or the follow up conversation when they are being rescued: Londo Mollari: There, you see? I'm going to live! G'Kar: So it would seem. Well, it is an imperfect universe. Londo: Bastard. G'Kar: Monster. Londo: Fanatic! G'Kar: Murderer! Londo: You are insane! G'Kar: And that is why we'll win. Londo: "Go be the ambassador to Babylon 5," they say. "It will be an easy assignment!" I hate my life. G'Kar: So do I. Londo: Shut up!

Adama: I want you all to understand this, if you do this. There will be no forgiveness. No amnesty. This boy, died honoring his uniform. You, you'll die with nothing.
Roslin: No. Not now. Not ever. Do you hear me? I will use every cannon, every bomb, every bullet, every weapon I have down to my own teeth to end you. I swear it. I'm coming for all of you.
BSG: The Oath and Blood on the Scales.
Adama inspires me. And in this episode I had chills when Roslin said that, first time I ever was afraid of her. She had so much emotion behind that, believing the Old Man was dead.

favorite is a tough call.
i'm going to list the moments that seemed to hang with me for the years and years after...
BLADERUNNER: The Deckard / Rachel dialogue (the one where she asks him if he's ever taken the test.) That and the 'attack ships on fire off the shoulder of orion' monologue
StarWars: When Luke 'faces Vader' (no pun intended) in the treecave on Dagobah. (not sure why)
StarTrek: 'What does god need with a Starship?', The final fight in the nebula vs Khan, V'ger
Stargate: Window of Opportunity. "right in the middle of my backswing!?" really, anything Jack
BSG: anything Adama, ever. the hot drop was great but really, EJO's performance in this series shatters the rest of the cast and anything i've ever seen. He was the show. ppl tear bsg up for tons of reasons (many of them valid), but i'm pretty sure history will prove it to be some of the best scifi ever due almost solely to Olmos' performance.

The battle at the end of At All Costs by David Weber (Alot of great moments throughout the Honor Harrington series((and yes its Honor, its her name god damnit.))
Pretty much all of John Ringos Legacy of the Aldenata and his Looking Glass series.
Necropolis by Dan Abnett from his Gaunts Ghost Series
Tank Lords by David Drake
Armor by John Steakly, very good book, probably one of my all time favorites, the end scene where the main character takes on the mercenaries in their enteirity and then boards their ship and finishes them off in space.
The Forever Hero by L. E.Modesitt Jr
And of course The Forever War by Joe Halderman.
Some of my favorites, not quite moments, but I can't bring myself to ruin the stories of these for those of you who haven't read them. And many many(beyond my ability to recall ;)) more books I enjoy that didn't jump directly to the forefront of my mind. |

BSG stuff:
The final five discovering, and then accepting their identities. Admiral Adama taking his ship back. President Roslin shouting into the comm, "I AM COMING FOR YOU". Starbuck playing All Along the Watchtower with her dad. Admiral Adama saying, "Jump the Ship Starbuck!" near the end of the show. The conversation between Lee and his father about giving up technology. Head Baltar and Head 6 appearing in present day New York and their conversation at the end of the show.
"You know it doesn't like that name".

The BSG Miniseries, Season 1, Episodes regarding the Pegasus in season 2 and the escape from New Caprica in Season 3.
The latest Star Trek movie was also brilliant as were ST movies 2 (The Wrath of Khan) and 6 (The Undiscovered Country).
Star Wars was a big influence when i was younger although i can't say im a fan nowadays.
In terms of literature the Ian M Banks Culture novels are my favourite pieces of Sci Fi literature, followed by Gaunts Ghosts.
Oh, and of course Firefly/Serenity. The executives at Fox who cancelled that show did the genre a great injustice.

One of my most memorable was Bruce Dern in "Silent Running" where he is saying goodby to his little robot:
"Realizing that his crime will be uncovered when the Berkshire finds him, Lowell jettisons the last dome to safety with the words "take good care of the forest, Dewey."
With the Berkshire only two hours away from docking, Lowell and the damaged Huey sit facing each other while he arms the last of the six nuclear charges. As he prepares to destroy himself and preserve the last dome, Lowell says to Huey: "When I was a kid, I put a note into a bottle, and it had my name and address on it. And then I threw the bottle into the ocean. And I never knew if anyone ever found it."
With that, Lowell destroys the Valley Forge with the last of the onboard nuclear charges.
The final scene is of a well-lit forest greenhouse drifting into space, tended by the sole remaining robot with a battered watering can."
Really fine Sci Fi is so hard to come by any more.

And BTW, Star wars isn't Sci-Fi.
Some people disagree...it depends on how you define sci-fi. Star wars is more specifically "space opera", which is a subdivision of sci-fi, since sci fi is the bigger category. Star Wars is more concerned with the storyline than the tech, so it is definitely not "classic" sci-fi- also known as "hard" sci-fi, which was the very first kind of sci-fi. Certain elements of Star Wars, have, however, been turned into "hard" sci-fi by its fanboys, and into fantasy (the Jedi Church for example) by others. Things like this are very hard to classify, since fantasy elements can also be present in sci-fi books and vice versa- take Dragonriders of Pern, by Anne McCaffrey, for example. Most of the books are more accurately fantasy, even though the backstory is sci-fi (somewhere between hard and soft).
One could even argue that science fiction is not its own genre at all, but a sub-genre of fantasy. Books like to defy classification.

This thread turned out a lot less fail than I was expecting.
In movies, I'll vote for "2001". Some of the feeling of weightlessness conveyed for instance when jogging inside the ship have not been reproduced yet - and this was done before computer tricks, also it has most memorable cut, and best board computer.
Books, I'll vote for Dur Tahar's counter-betrayal in Cherryh's "Chanur's Homecoming": Completely in character and well, I just love the way space is done in that series anyway starting from little touches like having "claw computer switches" instead of keyboards to the whole social background of not one, but about 6 species and at least 3 very detailed. It's rather obscure. More people should read those books.
Video games, the alien egg chase sequence from "Privateer". Only one thing has given me a rush like that: EVE PVP, but the sense of achievement was better in Privateer when after having mapped out new solar systems, finding an artefact, inadvertently activating it, then racing across the full map against an invulnerable and heavily-shooting opponent you got one, just one of the guns mounted to your own ship.

The book The 34th Rule by Armin Shimerman and David R. George III.
I also enjoyed Deep Space 9 since they toyed around with cultural differences. I don't remember what episode it is but there where on where Quark looks away disgusted from his mom say "Please mom, take those clothes off."

As far as I am concerned there's been very few good science fiction films. But for me they are:
- Blade Runner. If one could remove the bit from The Shining at the end of it then it would be the perfect film. - Alien and the full version of Alien 3 ("Howay, Geordies In Space, man!). The second one was just yet another Cameron film and the last one could have been so good, but they messed it up. - Galaxy Quest. Which always makes me laugh. "Ducts, why are there always ducts?" In fact this may be the only recent Hollywood 'comedy' which is actually funny.
TV: - Battlestar Galactica. The whole fracking lot of it; the script writing was fantastic and one didn't need to have a load of action (which was well done) to have a rattling good story and to keep us on tenterhooks from week to week and from season to season. - Doctor Who. "Midnight" was, I am sure, a version of Arthur C Clarke's "A Fall Of Moondust". It wasn't, oddly enough, written by Moffat who did write the excellent "Blink" (part two has just been filmed at my mate's place) and also "The Doctor Dances". - The Lost Room. An excellent three part series which, I hope, doesn't get turned into a series.
Books: - The Gap Series. Donaldson's best work and if I ever run into any of the protagonists in this game then I'm off! - The Mote In God's Eye. Pournelle irritates me immensely with his politics but he can write a cracking book. - Anything by Philip K ****. I can't remember which book it was but the line "I have seen the future. It is made of plastic" forever haunts me.

I really hope you're talking about the original Battlestar Galactica, because the ending of the "reimagined" version was the worst thing ever written in SF history. Period.
As for me, the one quote I will never forget was spoken by Delenn, in the Babylon 5 episode "Passing Through Gethsemane": We believe that the Universe itself is conscious in a way we can never truly understand. It is engaged in a search for meaning, so it breaks itself apart, investing its own consciousness in every form of life. We are the Universe, trying to explain itself.
Absolutely brilliant.

Well, the ending of the Re-Imagined series certainly wasn't the worst thing ever written in SF.
I once, accidentally, bought a feminist SF novel from one of these socio-political workshop things I came across one day along the South Bank whilst waiting for the pubs to open.
The opening line of the book went something like this.
"I was standing at the sink, looking out of the window, when they landed in my back garden."

I agree, though the final episode of reimagined BSG was a bit...bleh...it still makes you think. Man did just appear one day, we still havent found SOLID evidence to prove that Lucy is our ancestor, and with the recent outing of that other skeleton we go further back to something not even resembling Lucy. So BSG hints at the 'what if'...so maybe it is too much for us to even consider that Man is not from Earth, but BSG gives us a story where that is the case.
Personally speaking regardless of what Star Wars is considered as, space opera or sci fi, it is a universe a lot of us grew up with or grew into as kids...these younger generations (the post Cold War kids) just don't grasp what us older folk have with SW. Adventure, a world with more going on than we have here. Isn't that why we all love sci fi in the first place? It is a better...well more interesting world than we live in. I mean, hell if I could get on a ship and go out there I don't know if I would have a reason to come back to Earth other than my son. There is just so much out there, never be close minded....ok now im just babbling, I am so incredibly bored at work.....

They certainly should. That is a very good series.

ST6 Cloaked Bird of Prey under Gerneral Chang vs Enterprise
The cloaked Bird of Prey is pounding away on the Enterprise. Chang recites Shakespeare (the klingon original) on the Bridge.
Kirk and Bones go to manipulate a Torpedo, the Enterprise takes hit after hit. One Torpedo goes straight through the saucer section.
Enter Excelsior. Cpt. Zulu takes the pounding for the Enterprise.
Kirk finishes the "operation" on the torpedo and runs back to the bridge where the coolest ever "Fire!" Scene in any ST movie happens.
The music stops, the camera vollows the single torpedo flying slalom through space, looking for its target.
General Chang stands on the Bridge, watching the Torpedo come close while reciting "To be or not to be"
Impact, the cloak of the Bird of prey fails.
Enterprise and Excelsior open with Alpha Strikes simultaneously, completely destroying the BoP.

Actually, there were already primitive humans on the planet. It even showed some of the crew eyeing the primitives through binoculars. The show suggested that it was the result of the intermingling of the 2 species (BSG crew with the natives) that spawned modern humans. Nowhere in the final episode did the story suggest that all of a sudden humans appeared.
We have no "missing link" skeleton as of yet...the one that says "ahhh, THIS is the "Eve, and Adam, of modern humans." All science has right now is speculation, and that is what made the final episode interesting, for me anyway. It made it's own suggestion.

Blade Runner (entire movie...but some quotes):
Deckard: You're reading a magazine. You come across a full-page nude photo of a girl. Rachael: Is this testing whether I'm a replicant or a lesbian, Mr. Deckard?
Holden: Now tell me, in single words, only the good things that come into your mind when you think about your mother? Leon: My mother? Let me tell you about my mother.
Also, ANY of Bill Paxton's lines from Aliens: "Game over, man! Game over!" or "Great, why don't you put her in charge?"
"We gotta get inside. It's gonna be dark soon, and they mostly hunt at night. Mostly."
