The other day some guy in a cloaked Panther stole ore from my jetcan in a belt I was mining Pyroxeres in. Apparently taking my own ore back was a criminal offense, but since it was a highsec area, I figured it would just give me some minor security standing loss.
To my surprise I became a kill-on-sight target. Still managed to get out of there with half the quantity I had mined. I learned a valuable lesson there: Minmatar ships shoot as poorly as their design suggests. " Take my love, take my land, take me where I can not stand, I don't care, I'm still free. Inquiring minds want to know. I took my precautions, I could have looted all the ore in my bestower, but since that one had T2 stuff equipped I didn't want to risk losing it.
The Sigil was almost completely unequipped, except for some cargo expanders. By the time he had me targeted i was halfway charging my warp drive back to the station. He managed to fire three times before I jumped. It did destroy my entire shield and armor and about half my hull, but still .... that's a T2 ship and mine was just a poorly equipped T1 industrial.
To be honest, I wasn't expecting to get out of there at that point. Was definitely the most fun I've had mining. " Take my love, take my land, take me where I can not stand, I don't care, I'm still free. You can't take the sky from me. "

Thanks for the information. I would read this post again, even lacking a direct answer.

Please don't.
The best thing you can do is mine aligned.
Be that to bookmarks of your own making, or celestials, or stations, it's up to you.
But you can warp out IMMEDIATELY if you are pre-aligned.
This means you will be moving, though, and have to lock rocks as you move past them.
Doing this, you can fit for max yield and still mine in safety.
Enjoy. |

Enjoy. I'm always pre-aligned when I'm mining, also I don't steal my own ore back with my mining ship. I meant putting warp core stabilizers on my industrial ship. The one that doesn't mine. And only gets used to transport ore around. " Take my love, take my land, take me where I can not stand, I don't care, I'm still free. You can't take the sky from me. "

I now understand a little better how the Panther may have failed to point you.
His primary target likely left the field too quickly. That is, your pre-aligned mining ship.
You would do well to extoll the virtues of mining aligned to the rest of this sub-community of Eve. |

Just to be sure, when you say you're aligned, what's your ship's speed?

You would do well to extoll the virtues of mining aligned to the rest of this sub-community of Eve. Heh, as much as I like flattery, my mining ship had already left the field before my industrial ship even arrived (only have one account, remember?). But I first arrived in a Bestower, circled around the jet can and came to the conclusion that taking the ore might pose a danger to my ship. Not willing to risk it I went back to the station and grabbed my underwhelming Sigil.
When I arrived back at the jetcan (which was bookmarked) I noticed an Iteron flying casually towards that very same can. I figured it was the same player as the one with the Panther, who had decided that I wasn't going to grab the bait after all, and was now just going to take the ore himself.
With my amazing powers of deduction I took a gamble and guessed that he had his Panther docked at some station and he couldn't shoot me in that Iteron. Guess he had two account though, but he wasn't fast enough switching back to the other one as I still managed to get out of there.

I couldn't account for the whole story in my head until this post.
Now it makes much more sense.
Still, if you always mine aligned you are deservant of the flattery. My statement is 100% true. |

The EvE server sees ships as vectors. If their speed is zero, their time to warp is exactly the same in any direction, so "passive" alignment is a myth. Either you're aligned and moving, or you're unaligned. 75% of your current max speed is warpable, so moving at that speed provides instant warp, moving slower takes progressively longer to warp until your EFT align time at 0 speed (Full speed the opposite direction of where you want to go is somewhat longer).
If you were at zero speed when you reflipped the can (marking you as shootable), only the ineptitude of the panther pilot kept you alive. This is EVE. -á Everybody Versus Everybody. |

If you are not moving at 75% of your maximum velocity toward something you can warp to, you are not aligned.
If you are aligned you can warp immediately.
If you are not, you cannot. |

Right? If you're moving and are not locked the WCS are unnecessary.
They only ever come into play if the target gains a lock.
Which you should be able to avoid since you can warp instantly when aligned.
So no, no WCS. I asked that question earlier to try to help you avoid a scan res penalty.
Taking longer to lock rocks when you're align-mining would be murder. |

Haulers don't have to lock anything, so a scan res penalty is meaningless. === This thread reminds me of a time I was canflipped. I was jet-can mining in a retriever when some dude comes in a frigate and flips my can. I figured it was bait, but decided II was up for some pew pew, so I warped back the the station to grab my vexor.
It turns out I wasn't being baited, this guy was just stupid. I was labeled as a greifer on the killboard for a week after I blew up his hoarder. |
