Having recently seen significant discussion throughout C&P, Ships and Modules, and now even GD about carebear activities, tears, and the like...I thought I would make a thread to discuss the misconceptions about what a carebear is.
Can we agree that a carebear is someone who is extremely afraid of losing their pixellated assets and will go to any lengths to avoid that loss? This sense of fear is often expressed by players who hug empire space, stay in NPC corps etc.
And yet....most PvPers in Eve fit that description of those extremely fearful of losing their pixellated assets. They fly around in groups, in fleets, in gigantic blobs in hopes of presenting such superior numerical superiority that their assets won't be lost. They'll warp away if possible if declared primary. There's no difference in the amount of effort that a PvPer and a non-PvPer put into protecting their assets.
How often do you read about dishonored 1v1s? There's some true carebears right there. So afraid of losing their stuff that they'll break their word to win a fight.
A couple years ago, much because of threads similar to this one where carebears in the guise of "PvPers" felt the need to open mouth, insert foot, and demonstrate their feelings of superiority, this particular carebear (me) put up a challenge to the entire universe that I would pay up to 5 billion ISK to any pilot in Eve who could beat in me in a 1v1. Me, a carebear with no PvP experience got out of his Hulk and started training combat skills.
I did this to try making the big-mouthed "PvPers" put up or shut up. I had a *LOT* of fights. You know who was noticeably absent from the long list of people who participated in my event? All the self-proclaimed PvPers of Eve. I even sent them EVEmail invitations to fight me. I heard a lot of carebear whining to the tune of "1v1s aren't real PvP, why don't you come out to 0.0 and see REAL PvP."
Yeah...so you and your 25 friends can blob me into a new clone? You don't see mission runners taking fleets into missions to try outnumbering the NPCs do you?
There *are* PvPers who aren't afraid of a fair fight, who live for a challenge, and the thrill of riding on the edge of danger. These players are extremely rare, a unique breed, and by far not a common sight in Eve. By the same token, there exist mission runners who risk the perils of lowsec to try gaining its rewards from faction missions, L5 missions, and higher quality L4 missions. They'll put aside their mission ships and pick up combat ships when they get war-deced by Empire corps, and they'll fight. Often times they lose because they're outgunned and outnumbered....but at least they fight.
In summary, please consider the idea of a carebear, and what constitutes one. Because if the word carebear is only going to apply to highsec players and mission runners, then we need a parallel word to apply to PvPers who fit the same profile. Since "carebear" is taken, I vote for a word that will probably be edited out, but starts with "p" means "cat" and rhymes with "wussy."
