Good luck with your new venture.
Have you considered using virtual shares? I'm interested in adding you to the BSAC Exchange.

My favorite thing about you Block is that you just do things. You don't really talk about them...you just do them.

I will take a serious look and see how fast I could implement it. I may go with both routes until I am sure using your index works for this company. But need to do a bit more research first, will let you know asap though.
Edit:
I looked, but not sure I understand how it would work. Would I just use it for tracking purposes? How would isk be distriubted and such?

The Exchange will let you manage your Fund's virtual shares. You will be able to view the stockledger and issue dividends. If you desire, the exchane will make the stockledger publicaly and report your dividends. In addition, you will be able to setup buy backs and/or sell orders.
The exchange will handle cash withdraws and bill your manager account. The exchange will not track your trade progress; that's a job for your auditor.
Most importantly, the Exchange will allow your investors trade your shares in real time.

Virtual Shares thread with some great discussions: http://www.eveonline.com/ingameboard.asp?a=topic&threadID=627059&page=1#1
Original Post from late 2007:
Ok guys...
Disclaimer: This is 100% my opinion and does not reflect the future plans of EBANK nor the opinions of the EBANK Board of Directors.
The exchanges need an overhaul.
Arguements:
1.) Depending on brokers leads to bottlenecks and paralysis (EGSEx).
2.) Trading shares in-game leaves no trail, isn't supported by contracts, and requires brokers. (RSEX)(also see point #1)
Assumptions:
1.) CCP will quite likely not improve share functionality in the near or far future.
2.) The stock exchanges would be more active if trades could be completed much more quickly.
Conclusion:
Shares should become virtualized.
Take them out of the game entirely. A third party site could act as a proxy (holding all shares, akin to deposits) and credit each account with dividends while reflecting what shares they have. Exchanges could be logged, transactions automated, and in general the secondary market for shares and bonds would be boosted.
Commentary:
I'm not saying RSEX or EGSE suck, far from it, they've done a superb job so far and I'm a big fan of both personally. This is simply my opinion on where the secondary markets (exchanges) need to be. Could they adapt to this model? I think so, absolutely! Should they? That's up to them entirely.

It's not just about technology, but opportunity.
EvE is not a finance game, its intended players are not stock, commodity or futures traders.
Consider this: earlier today (no don't ask me where because it's part of the hundreds of pages I read every day) there was a satisfied announcement at how low end private detail Forex traders (basically, the guy trading at home) achieved a new high.
At this point, since Forex is so huge, liquid and the announcement sounds like a victory, you'd expect some explosive revelation.
But no, the announcement was about the new high going beyond 2% of the total Forex traders (aka banks and professionals).
I repeat, an announced big achievement of 2 (two) percent.
Now, imagine - if 2% is a milestone in low end retail trading (read: many in numbers) - how abysmally few people are interested in EvE advanced and virtual trading.
Let's imagine that we also have 2% here in EvE (doing some big oversimplification but to stay in very optimistic numbers) who want to actively trade a secondary market (secondary in its proper, RL meaning).
Concurrent players in these days are like 40k. 2% is 800 people who at least once a week would use a virtual trading setup ie stock exchange, quotes and whatsnot.
Now imagine 800 people - even a day - willing to do something. This means how many security hands out a day? What happens since a guy wants to IE shortsell something X now and there's not a dog willing to play the long counterpart for 1 hour? The slippage between what he quotes his security at vs when someone else bothers requiring the opposite action could be HUGE, and this even assuming the two guys actually want to trade the same amount of securities. If guy B wants to go long on shortsell A but just for half of the securities, the other half is going to be rolled over... for more hours.
That is, it's entirely possible that with the current implementations (which I find boring and unproductive in money vs hour terms) we don't reach a thresold needed to even enable a secondary market.

Financial literacy (or lack thereof) was directly behind me defining what financial instruments are (and aren't) in MD back in mid-2007. Obviously people can do whatever they want, but this was intended as a guide on how to either gain financing through equity or debt.
Defined Stock and Bond models for the EVE Market (mid 2007) http://www.eveonline.com/ingameboard.asp?a=topic&threadID=538996
The biggest success of this thread was the huge reduction in variable rate bonds which were very confusing for investors.
