Imagine that. A constructive thread. Here's my advice, in several parts.
- First and foremost. Eve is best played when you set goals for yourself. Doesn't even really matter what the goal is. Could be "get into a mining barge". Could be "fly a battleship well enough to do level 4's". Could be "Get into a solid 0.0 corp". Pick a goal and work towards it. Fundamentally, this is what makes Eve different from the grind-based mmos out there. You get to play the game, learn, explore and have fun while you make your way to the goal over time. You do NOT spend every waking minute mindlessly making a skill bar move.
- Think of your first 3-4 months in the game as the Eve equivalent of birth -> high school. When you're a kid, everything is really serious. When you're an adult you look back on all that drama of your childhood with warm amusement. In very short order you'll look back and have a chuckle over this loss. It won't be long before making 30 million a night is pretty easy.
- Avoid the pitfall of thinking in generic mmo terms. "Higher levels == better". There's such a weird amount of whining about skill points needed to compete in this game and it's just so silly. It doesn't take but 2-3 months and you're a viable combat asset to any pvp outfit. Period. The hard, linear "level 80 beats level 75, period" thinking of lesser mmo's simply doesn't exist in the larger scheme of Eve.
- In my opinion, the biggest switch to make mentally is to accept ship loss. The old golden rule of eve "don't fly what you can't afford to lose" is 100% wisdom. When you get used to the concept of getting blow'd up and suffering real loss, you'll come to realize it truly makes the game experience richer. It simply does. The insane depth of the game stems from the emergent world that results from this. No other game has this. Full stop.
- Get into pvp. I've spent my years in Eve doing all sorts of crap. From pure carebear, to mixed carebear-who-can-pitchfork-in-an-alliance, to pure combat pilot. And let me tell you, the most fun I've had in the game is being a combat pilot. Specifically, a rank and file pilot for whatever space holding 0.0 alliance. That's where the game truly shines and you will have your Moment Of Clarity about what the game truly is about.
But baby steps are fine. Avoid putting all your eggs in one basket for a few months and chisel out your place in the game. Pretty soon the floodgates will open and the broader game will hit you full force.
