Just joined a militia ? ready to go pwn someone's face in a militia blob ? Great ! But hold on just a sec, are you sure you know who to fire at ? "Yeah yeah" I hear you say, "I just shoot at red flashies/red stars yada yada" well NOT SO FAST my friend, it's really not that simple. There are several situations that may lead you to fire upon other militia members and/or Blues (high standings allies) and this is something we wish to avoid. Apart from the fact it can cause chaos and potentially lose your side an engagement it can also be VERY EMBARRASSING for you. Let's look at a couple of scenarios...
1. you are fleeted and waiting at a gate, another militia member joins fleet and warps to meet you at this rally point. However he is - 8.9 sec status and as he lands on gate he is flashing red because your overview is not set right. You open fire and kill him, the rest of the fleet opens fire on you and you get no fleet invites for the next week as well as losing your ship and your pod.
2. you are fleeted and just about to land on a gate where some non militia allies are helping out small militia gang at a hisec gate camp. You see a red flashy and once again open fire. Unfortunately you have just shot at a blue who has repped a gang member with Global criminal countdown. For consequences see above
So here's what you do to make sure this does not happen to you.
1. open you overview settings by right clicking the small triangle at the top left of the overview.
2. click the "filter" tab and the then "states" tab and deselect the following - pilot is in your corp, militia, alliance, fleet, pilot has good, high standing. it should look like this...
This will remove those ppl from your overview, but the job is not complete as some pilots will meet more than one of those criteria and still appear red to you as described above. We now have to prioritize fleet/corp/militia and good/high standings over outlaw status to make sure that red flashy friends do not appear red flashy to you.
1. In overview settings, open the "appearance" and then "background" tabs.
2. using the move up and move down buttons, place the criteria so that pilot is an outlaw is BELOW pilot is in your fleet/corp/militia or has good/high standings. it should appear as shown below
Make sure to remember to tick the boxes as well as arrange the priority of the list.
You may now save this overview profile as something like "combat" and even make a new overview tab so you can have default and combat settings instantly to hand. Most pilots will have other tabs but I am not going into that here. this is the bare minimum you need to do to prevent friendly fire... you will find your own preffered setting in time.
If anyone has noticed something I have missed pls point it out
see you on the field o7
FAKE EDIT and DISCLAIMER : I am aware there is a link to an overview guide in the resources sticky but when i went to look at it, the link was broken. I am making this thread merely so I have the info all in one place to give to new militia members (it is specifically directed at them) and so I only have to link them to it rather than type it out for every new FW member who asks. If anyone else wants to rread it... np.

I would also strongly suggest making sure that your overview is showing the "Militia" column, as shooting an "allied" militia member (eg shooting someone in the Amarr militia if you're Caldari, shooting a Minmatar militia member if you're Gallente, or visa versa) is also fairly embarrassing. The column doesn't have to be big, just wide enough to show the first letter (C for Caldari, G for Gallente, M or Minmatar, A for Amarr). 3/4 of the time you'll never need it, but that other 1/4 of the time can make it worthwhile.
Other than that, all-round good advice. This should be for your "combat" overview tab, and you should have a 2nd tab that DOES show fleet/corp/alliance members.

I think this makes sense. However, by doing this it is now much easier for someone to friendly fire and get away with it since they won't appear on your overview :)

lol i was working on the assumption that most noobs wish to avoid friendly fire and not get away with it - a fairly reasonable assumption
besides the "x is trying to warp scramble " msg ALWAYS gives it away

You only need:
Bad, horrible and neut standing then outlaw and two wars no need the wrecks
On the next picture:
The first two wars and outlaw that all
You then set show bracket on the travel overview and switch between pvp and travel and with bracket you see everyone in space.
So even if the guy is red as long he in you militia he wonÆt show at all or any reds that are friendly same for blue they donÆt show.

The expression "picking gnat poop out of pepper springs to mind"...as I said before, each pilot will have their own preferred settings in time, this is mine and it works. You aren't actually pointing out anything that is wrong with my set up, just what is different from yours.

Just update I donÆt say is bad I just say you can improve bità + no need to assigned colors to target (if blob warp on you will lag more) many ppl just use icons (but you need good eye for that).
I'm not sure i see ur point TBH. I don't see what difference it will make going to the effort to deselect the backgrounds for pilot criteria that are already filtered out of the overview in the Filter/states tabs apart from complicating things for no discernible benefit. I was trying to keep this as simple as possible for new FW pilots and if you simply move "outlaw" status below militia, high standings etc you will pretty much end up with the picture shown. Anything else is pretty much unnecessary. i admit to filling in 2 tick boxes that are not ticked in the default, but then I'm a bit OCD about stuff like that.
As far as the background vs icons is concerned I left it as default because as I already said, this guide is supposed to be the bare minimum necessary to avoid friendly fire, and keeping things nice and OBVIOUS for newer pilots is desireable IMHO. Toggling blink off will help with lag, but lag is not what I was attempting to address ITT. Like previously stated, pilots will find there own preferred settings in time and I think background vs icons falls into that category, it really has little bearing on friendly fire.
