Whats the crack with people that can not seem to understand the basics of drawing cash from a machine? Is it to much to ****ing ask that they: Put in card - enter pin number - chose amount - take cash, seriously it's not even funny, why do 99% of the population feel they need to spend the best part of a year drawing out cash while I am stood behind them freezing my balls off.
TELL ME WHY!?

Once you enter your pin number there should be a timer. If your transaction isn't finished within 30 seconds, you should be electrocuted every few seconds until you finish. It's only the only answer imo.

The ones I really really like are the Cash Points that won't dispense cash if you are withdrawing when you're into an overdraft, and the one I use is in a student area, so sometimes they try to reuse the machine three or four times. They just can't seem to figure it out.

The real problem is that those pin number machines are in grocery stores now too. It used to take ages to wait for old people to count their pennies, but now they can literally take minutes before they successfully manage to put the code in. It is sort of funny, that a feature that is meant to help streamline the whole process, actually puts a stop to the flow of customers.

I like the feel and scent of money, so I prefer to use cash. Not to mention I hate having to remember a hundred and one codes, passwords and numbers for every god damn thing in the world. I can't change that, but I try to avoid and mitigate it as much as I can.

I had one woman infront of me take ten bloody minutes, she kept putting her card back in and doing another transaction, then checking balance, then getting receipt, each time taking the card out, then putting it back in, rather than just pressing "Yes" for another transcation.

Hi Neb, this is Pore on his second account!
Feature-creep is infecting cash machines! You can even buy phone credit on them now. So while you just want to get at that tenner you need, some bloke might be trying to figure out who he will phone next week, how long he will chat, and whether he needs extra credits for texts.
I fear it will only get worse as more of these 'conveniences' are introduced to cash points.

In my town they have a habit of standing there whilst reading the printout and THEN deciding to put in a completely different card and check the balance on that card.
I've seen someone put 3 cards in to check balance, and then leave a cash machine without withdrawing money at all - and I'll bet they did not even bank with the owner of the machine anyway.
I hate them with a passion. |

Nothing is ever implemented to streamline a process. Whenever you think about streamlining a process, think about maximizing profit instead. This feature is meant to increase profit by saving on employees.
Sure, they may lose some customers too, but as long as most people (like you) prefer to whine rather than find a different grocery store, it's still a win for them.

These are the worst offenders *shudders*
I get embarassed if I have to do something on a second card. But annoyingly it's not always unavoidable...in the UK, to use a card in stores now you have to 'unblock' the PIN or some such from an ATM. And you have to do it even for replacement cards when the last already worked. It's an annoying extra process that every card has to go thru...I don't see the point personally. If banks are confident that the PIN is the alpha and omega of card protection, it does nothing more than hassle the cardholder. Anyone who knows the PIN could unblock it for use in stores as easily as simply using it in a store.
So now at the cash point a new card holder: - Enter card - Enter issued PIN - Change PIN - Retrieve card - Enter card - Enter new PIN - Unblock PIN - Enter PIN again - Retrieve card - Enter card - Enter new, unblocked PIN - Check balance - Top up PAYG phone - Withdraw ú10 (with receipt) - Retrieve card, cash and receipt
I'd have given them ú10 to go somewhere else -------------

Too easy for me to loose receipts and not keep my balance correct, plus it makes it so much easier to stick to my budget.

Totally agree, buying online or using my card in stores always ends with me spending way too much whereas when I use cash I find it much easier to budget my money and I am more likely to look for a bargain aswell rather than buy it at full price in the first store I go into. ------

Self checkouts at Tesco/Sainsbury's ftw. I get through so much faster now that they've replaced 4 tills (which were rarely all staffed) with 10 self-checkouts (which only takes 2 staff for all 10).

@ the OP, I feel your pain. I think some people really like to queue though. Take my local Argos at peak times for example. Despite the fact Argos have supplied these excellent self-service checkout tills, no-one uses them- they prefer to queue for ten minutes.

No, that's not because they like to queue, it's because they don't know how to use the self service checkouts.

Actually it's meant to have 'money' in circulation without it actually being real cash, meaning the banks will have more real cash which in turn means they get to lend out more. The BANKS want you to use it, ofcourse the shops like it as well but only because the banks made changing and handling real cash super expensive, on purpose obviously. If the banks would make it more expensive to use electronic stuff and not put a stupidly high handling fee on real cash transactions then you'd see it the other way round, but you won't see that happen ofcourse.
It's the choice of the bank, not the shop.

They do occasionally have their idiosyncrasies, I had great fun* recently with one at Sainsbury's which came up with "item not bagged" underneath the first thing I scanned, but placing it in a bag made it come up with "unexpected item in bag". Going back to "item not bagged" if I took it back out. Turns out something had convinced it I was never going to bag it, so when I did it assumed I was trying to steal something else.
*sarcasm for those who miss it easily
Generally though, they're much quicker to deal with than queuing for a normal till.

To be correct, the term is either simply "PIN" or the full "Personal Identification Number" (one syllable vs eleven). The term "PIN Number" is case of RAS Syndrome (Redundant Acronym Syndrome Syndrome). -----
