This idea floating about reminds me of the movie called "Krull".
Anyone remember that? The bad guys had this fortress that would move from one place to the other with each day. When in place, the bad guys would roam about, wreak havoc, etc. Krull is a fantasy movie, somewhat campy, but good for a laugh. An entire moving station or fortress with each downtime reminds me of this.

Ideas lead to ideas lead to ideas.....
Someone mentioned asteroids and we have seen asteroid colonies in EvE.
In the book "Ringworld" by Larry Niven (which may have been the inspiration for Halo), they talked about the Dyson's Sphere and how one could be made. It was said that it might be possible to take enough metallic mass, like asteroids clustered together, and then melt it, spinning the whole ball causing it to expand into a large hollow metal sphere.
Ringworld itself, and the Halo, would take, as the book states, "enough mass equal to Jupiter".
I know this is not on the topic, but it appears that getting more than 4 hours of sleep allows me to access my memory of things.
Nova Fox, I look forward to your concept art!

Dyson Spheres have a massive issue though. Look up "Solar Wind", and I think you understand the problem. Both from the inside, and the outside.
Yeah I also screwed up on the assumptions over a "Niven's Ring" as it (a Halo) was originally called. See the Wikipedia on this. It takes the mass of 32 Jupiters to create enough energy to get such a thing moving. I read Ringworld in 1990, and the mind is starting to slip . Holy cow in a month that's 20 years...
I think in Star Trek TNG they found such a Sphere but noted the same issues. The Halo is also an impossibility due to no known material making such a construct possible (so they say).
Back onto Hive Ships....

How does this Hive Ship concept compare to the Death Star?
Yeah yeah, "It's a tarp!!!" let's get it out of our systems now....
Nobody ever saw that thing warp, it had everything, and spewed a heck of a lot of fighters.
Just had one weakness though. You all know the drill.

So do we have a size estimation on this thing?
Will it block the sun?
Will it show up in the Info of a system as an "orbiting body"? (That would be cool).

This idea is moving along well, I think.
The lack of dev involvement at this point might be due to them being busy running from lava flows, mud flows, huge clouds of ash, and angry European banksters.
Since there is going to be a deep safe nerf in Tyrannis, perhaps the ship described here would need to be able to orbit a star from beyond the intended barrier, lest this thing, if used as an invasion tool, send in fleets to fall rapidly to lag.
I am looking forward to what Nova Fox will come up with. Those of you who followed the SOE Exploration/Science ships thread would know why.

Edited by: Herzog Wolfhammer on 13/05/2010 00:30:44 Given the new PI stuff in Tyrannis, it seems even more so now that this Hive ship concept simply "fits".
To me, this thing is more like a POS-answer to the Siege Tower of the middle ages. A siege tower was in basic form like a small rolling tower or keep that you parked next to the castle you wanted to invade. A hive ship, not really like a ship, and not permanently anchored, and can move across systems.
Maybe even generate a wormhole with enough Isogen-5 fuel....

I think the ultimate goal of the Hive ship is to facilitate the "nomadic corporation" concept. The events of late regarding the Sanshas and the evidence of wormhole manipulation show some good potential for how a Hive Ship could be used. A hive ship being for the most part like a well armed station with all amenities, and able to jump from system to system, but only once in a while and otherwise not mobile.
Looks good, I think.

PI started since I last viewed this thread.
So now I can say that this hive ship concept would be even more interesting. We have seen that the Sansha can use worm holes to intrude on systems and attack worlds, so perhaps it's a matter of time for us?
I hive ship, with all of it's shortcomings regarding movement, might be big enough to field a weapon that takes out planetary installations. Why have outposts and such on a planet, or anything in this game, if it cannot be blown up by someone else?
But to bother with such a thing, something special about it there would have to be, and I am curious, if ever, of exactly what that is.

Ok so far what we have here, I think...
A very LARGE SHIP!!!! HUUUUUGE! We're talking "block the sun" here.
It has hangers with complete facilities for repair and refit. Lot of space. So much space, it's full of space.
Clone vat.
Reprocessing facilities.
Production/research/labs.
This is basically a station in many many ways except that:
It can go anywhere without using gates, but once a day, and makes its "move" during downtime.
Only one per corp. Whether or not a corp that has SOV "somewhere" can have one or not I think was addressed but this hive ship was implied to make a Nomadic corporation possible.
I think this Hive Ship concept should not be forgotten. In particular, I think it will make 0.0 space possible for many people who want to go into NPC space but find that once they set up shop at an NPC station, they are sitting ducks to the alliances that "own" it. Being able to move around will wreak holy hell for those NPC-space inhabitants who treat it like their SOV.
It would would be a major thorn in the side if such ships are allowed to go into a system where an existing corp hold SOV. I am not sure what the ramifications of this would be. Oh the howls of those who hold SOV somewhere, and the drooling of those who don't. It would be enough shenanigans to consider if these things were simply limited to NPC 0.0 and Low sec.
Please, CCP, don't lose consideration of the Hive Ship. I think that these ships would be a great addition to the game, providing more opportunities for players on both ends of it. Also, making it possible for corporations to be truly nomadic would add a new lifestyle choice to this game and enhance the player base.

The idea is stabilizing.
All that's needed is Nova Fox to draw them.

Originally by: Kel Dario Pardon me if this allready have been mentioned somewhere, but I think Hive (mother)-ships could only work if CCP add more regions to the game that IS NOT connected with known space. Thus I could see a use for them as movable outposts.
Why not conected you may ask? Well because if concord connect it with New Eden then the big alliance-blocks would scramble to put their flag on it and as usual squeeze the little alliance/corp for rent/protection money, or just close it off.
Then if you don't pay up they would just drop 800 people in dreads and titans on your head. Even if the hive-ship would be in invulnerable mode when deployed a few people in recons could make life unpleasent in the system for the inhabitants.
So how would people move between these 'new' systems and New Eden, maybe through a wormhole, maybe through a buidable stargate that only allow a limit ammount of mass.
Personly, I think the idea of hive-ships sounds cool but I'm not sure if we really need more space just to support a new feature witht the state of the server atm.
Hmmmmmm
There are implications in the back story that a time could come when we can use a network of wormholes to travel about, kind of like the Sansha raiders.
Perhaps this might be something only a Hive Ship could do, and do it in unknown systems?
This would certainly solve the respawn issues around wormhole systems where they get cleaned out and the return rate of new sites is very slow. Imagine that instead of living in a wormhole, you go to a new one each day or every few days (after collecting enough isogen 5 for the jump?) and hit new sites, or give holy hell to those worm bears and their carebear death stars for a time...
This... could be good.

Necro bump.
Still a darned good idea.
With a coming nerf to Supercarriers, and possible changes to local, changes in the ability to keep control of a system or region might spur corporations on to becoming more nomadic. A hive ship would better facilitate that.
Nomadic corporations in the game would add a new angle to it. But right now, to do so, would be more like a "Battlestar Galactica" convoy. and still you have to anchor somewhere eventually even for a short time. The arguments for and against in this thread are well put.
So bump for the idea.

Why not have a clone vat in a hive ship?
It would be quite interesting to be able to install Jump Clones in them too. Imagine that, a nomadic corporation deploying a hive ship would not even have to be "All Nomadic". Jump clones in a Hive Ship ship would enable the movement and maintainance of the ship while corporation members - and maybe even those who are not members but have good standings - are off on other things. This could make for a very instant presence wherever the hive ship goes.
Probably a big headache too for those who presently rely on blob warfare to solve all of their problems.
