Hi folks,
Somehow I fail to find exploration scan probes on the market. Looked in Ammo & Charges > Probes, searched, read tutorials, browsed forums, googled... 
Sure I am missing something obvious

Ammunition & Charges / Probes / Scan Probes
or just do a search in the market window for "Scan probes"

exactly where u thought they were...ammo section
make sure that u uncheck "show only available" and set ur market to region wide....if u find no market orders there are no probes being sold in ur region

Hmm, haven't got my skills ready yet so I can't check atm. I take it is the Core scanner probe that is reconfigurable to any type of probe with any range?

Show info, you should find something like:
[]Used with (chargegroup) []
[]Scanner Probe []
Also check Capacity of the launcher and Volume of the Probe.

I like to play this game because it make my in-game actions and archievments to mean something in-game. |

What I am looking for is the probes of type Quest, Persuit, Comb, Sift and multispectral. I am told in fact there are 21 types of exploration probes but I can only find the Quest Survey probe which seems to be for moon analysis. Something is still very confusing.

You are reading an old probing guide, those probes are obsolete now.
You should probably be looking for 'Core Scanner Probe I' which replaced the probes that you listed.
There are also some other variants like the 'Combat Scanner Probe I' and the 'Deep Space Scanner Probe I' but for low skill PvE exploring the core scanner probe (or it's slightly improved cousin the Sisters Core Scanner Probe is what you want.)

You're reading very out of date exploration guides. Read This and This for info on the new system.

All 3 probes are invaluable,
Core finds exploration sites only and has a 32AU range
Combat finds exploration sites, ships, drones etc and has a 64AU range
Deep Space finds exploration sites, ships, drones etc, and has up to 256AU range.
So if your system is a reasonable size then it's much easier to change to combat or deep space probes to cover the system in 1 probe rather than spreading core probes around to cover it.
